News 5 at 10 - Wine is Flowing and Business is Booming at the Miletta Vista Winery / June 23, 2014
Two years ago today the McDowell's watched their home and business go up in flames, but out of the ashes an even more successful business is rising and the glasses are now full at Miletta Vista Winery in St. Paul.
Two years may have passed, but Mick McDowell can still recall the sinking feeling he felt as he watched his home and business burn to the ground.
We both just broke down and cried because when you lose your home you lose your business you lose everything that you sweat so hard for, for 5 years it really is a tragedy, said Mick McDowell, owner of the Miletta Vista Winery.
On June 23rd of 2012 the Miletta Vista Winery in St. Paul caught fire in the middle of the night.
Pretty devastated even just to talk about it I guess is kind of after the 2 year period you've worked so hard to rebuild and get back into business I think sometimes you put those feelings on the back burner, said Loretta McDowell, owner of the Miletta Vista Winery.
With harvest only a few weeks away the McDowell's had to make a decision, rather than shutting down their business, they decided to rebuild.
We had grown to the fourth largest wine sales of Nebraska wines in Nebraska so with that kind of success you just say you know let's give it another try, said Mick.
Thanks to some delicious wine and a slew of loyal customers, two years later and the owners of the Miletta Vista Winery are toasting to the future.
It's so nice to see some of the old customers and a lot of the new customers and you think of a lot of the older customers are people that came a lot they really became like family, said Loretta.
And now the wine is flowing and business is booming. Since the fire the McDowell's have expanded dining hours and built another room for parties and business conferences.
I think it's just as good or actually better, said Mick.
Since reopening the McDowell's have seen visitors from 21 countries and 46 states.
