30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are doing two of the free walks in Milford Sound. The Milford Sound Lookout Walk and the Milford Sound Foreshore Walk. They are both super short, only 20 minutes each, so if you have some spare time in Milford Sound or are just visiting Milford Sound on a budget, then these walks are well worth considering.
Both of these walks are accessed at the waterfront of Milford Sound (Milford Sound Marina) so we hit the Milford Sound Lookout Walk first, 10 minutes uphill through forest until we reach a viewing platform with trees framing those famous views of Milford Sound including Mitre Peak, Sinbad Gully, Lion Rock and Stirling Falls.
Next, we check out the Milford Foreshore Walk which is a 20 minute loop through beech forest to the open views on the Milford Sound waterfront. Here are where you can get some of the best photos of Milford Sound!

Must See Sights along Milford Sound Route
The driving route from Te Anau to Milford Sound is about 120km each way but we took 2 full days to cover it. There are too many places to stop and the beauty of the place is beholding. Some of my favourite places
1. Sunset at Milford Sound Foreshore. As the tide was very low, we could walk right up to the foreshore and observe the life of driftwood and pebbles that were otherwise submerged.
2. Hollyford Track. This is the only turnoff on this road, but it uncovered so many gems. Gunns Camp: We had a lovely chat with the owner's wife and you get to walk around the campsite and have a chuckle at the owner's sense of humour. Moraline Creek: It is tucked away along the gravel road, but you wouldn't wanna miss this precarious bridge.
3. The Chasm. The name itself says it all. Get mesmerised by the turquoise water funnelling through a narrow chasm that sculpted the rocks around it. Could stare at it the whole day.
4. Homer Tunnel. Built by manual labourers in the 1930s, you wonder how they managed as it pierces through a solid mountain. As you exit, it opens into a windy hairpin road down the cliff face. This reminded us of the Trollstigen Road in Norway, except we had better visibility this time. =)
5. All the mossy rainforest.
Oh yes, the popular choice is to spend a couple of hours herded into a cruise ship with a million people and pay big bucks to get close to the fjords. We didn't do that, but for a couple of hundred bucks you can.

Snow at Sea Level in Milford Sound!
Generally the Tasman Sea keeps the air temperatures of Milford Sound just above freezing, but that wasn't the case in August 2015 when we got snow at sea level for the second time that season.
Homer Tunnel - 100% Pure New Zealand by Motorhome
Day 10 - Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, we headed to Milford Sound from the Cascade Creek Department of Conservation (Doc Site) near Lake Gunn, where we camped for the night. Driving north along the Te Anau-Milford Highway (94).
The first stop was Falls Creek Waterfall, with easy parking for the motor home and only a short walk, this is a welcome stop on the long road. The next stop was Gertrude Valley Lookout, then the small queue for the Homer Tunnel.
The tunnel was cut in a more manual way, which is clear to see as you drive through (no smooth edges of a tunnel boring machine) and only high enough in the middle to fit the motor home.
The other side of the tunnel was blanketed in low cloud, we followed the road down the pass only catching the occasional glimpse of the valley, until we stopped at The Chasm Viewing Bridge. It was here I say my first Kea (green parrot), however, I didn't take a picture as it was just walking around the car park and I thought I'd see another, however, I didn't.
The Chasm Viewing Bridge was awesome, the water has carved some great shapes into the rocks and it makes an incredible noise as the water thunders through.
The final stop for the day was Milford Sound Lodge, where we had reserved a motor home powered pitch and dinner for 8pm as it was New Year's Eve. As it was only 4pm, we set up the motor home and decided to walk down to Milford Sound.
The tide was out and we were able to walk along the Milford sound foreshore loop walk, it's only a 30 min walk. This walk wanders through beech forest and alongside the sandy foreshore area in Milford Sound, where we found the best view of Milford Sound from the Swing, which is one of the best in the bay.
Milford Sound Scenic Boat Ride - Queenstown New Zealand
The beauty of this landscape draws thousands of visitors each day, with between 550,000 and 1 million visitors in total per year. This makes the sound one of New Zealand's most-visited tourist spots, and also the most famous New Zealand tourist destination, even with its remote location and the long journey from the nearest population centres. Almost all tourists going to the sound also take one of the boat tours which usually last between 1--2 hours. They are offered by several companies, departing from the Milford Sound Visitors' Centre. There is also the option of extended overnight cruises on Milford Sound.

Momorangi Bay - Queen Charlotte Sound
Momorangi Bay is one of the more popular bays in the Queen Charlotte Sounds. It has been a favorite place to visit in summer for both locals and visitors to the region. There is also a popular camping ground in this bay.
Starting with a close-up aerial view of this beautiful bay, you will see footage heading out towards Davies (Umungata) bay which is a popular bay for water skiing with a brief look at Bottle Bay and looking down the Queen Charlotte Sound. Footage continues on to take a closer look at Ngakuta Bay and some of the smaller neighboring bays along the golden mile (The road running from Picton past Okiwa bay) and then slowly makes it way back into Momorangi Bay.
With a closer look at Momorangi you will see the 5 Knot swimming area, some of the camping ground on the foreshore, the playground and a look out across to the jetty on the far end of the campground.
The footage was taken early December 2015 with the DJI Inspire 1 V1 using an X3 Camera with a standard lens.

Toasty Melbourne Summer rides - Merri Creek Trail 2- Southbound 21km / 26kph
This beautiful tracks deserves a second review. I've included some information at the beginning to describe the weather during the ride. In this case it was a rather toasty and windy afternoon with top temperatures hitting 37/38 degrees. Doing the track from North to South offers quite a different perspective. Starting at Sydney Road i follow the Ring Road Trail for a few kilometres and then turn south to follow the Merri Creek trail . Just before Dights Falls I turn left to do the final sequence along the Main Yarra Trail and finish at Fairfield Park (where my journey continues along the MYT and the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail to Ringwood.

National Park--New Zealand Taupo part 2
The town of Taupo sits at the edge of Australasia's largest lake. Local attractions include trout fishing, skiing, and geothermal parks.
Add to Wishlist
Beautiful Lake Taupo is actually a huge volcano with a fiery history. Its most recent eruption, in 181 AD, was large enough to change the sky as far away as Europe and China. According to Maori legend, the lake is the pulsating heart of Maui's fish (New Zealand's North Island).
The lakeside town of Taupo provides a base for visitors who love to fish for trout, ski Mount Ruapehu and explore the local geothermal phenomena. Popular Taupo experiences include Huka Falls, geothermal walks, a prawn farm, lake cruises, New Zealand's first public cable wakeboarding park and guided kayak expeditions to see the rock carvings at Mine Bay.
Lake Taupo is a fantastic region for year-round mountain biking, with the recent completion of the Great Lake Trail. Along with cycling, there's excellent hiking and golf opportunities.
