Obscura Day 2010- From the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington DC
From Sum of Change's Coverage of Obscura Day 2010. An event that was specifically off the beat and path, the 1st Annual Obscura Day was hosted by Atlas Obscura (atlasobscura.com),a compendium of this age's wonders, curiosities, and esoterica or a guide the unusual and hard to find treasures across the world.
I, (obviously) went to the DC event at the National Museum of Health and Medicine on the Campus of Walter Reid Army Medical Hospital (more on that in a bit) but Obscura Day was celebrated in over 80 cities around the world. The event kicked off in Australia with a tour of a bio-luminescent glow worm filled tunnel in Australia, and featured such diverse events, such as a trip the worlds largest tree house, an underground tour of the Atlantic avenue tunnels in NYC, a time travel buss tour of 1050s LA, and our event at the Museum of Health and Medicine in DC.
Though few artifacts at the museum were unusually obscure, the museum collects very important items to the survival of our society that many of us take for granted, such as the largest collection of microscopes and brains for research. It is one of the only museums dedicated not only to the overall history of health, but also to the study of military medicine. So it features areas on the development of human beings, from pre-birth to death, in addition to more military specific sections, such as a room about the identification of human remains.
The museum however is quite large and diverse and has over 25 million items in its collection. The most unique artifacts are probably the bullet that killed Abraham Lincoln and a fragment of his skull. This is a true rarity, not only for the historical significance of the artifacts themselves but because this is one of the few displays of the actual mortal remains of one of our countrys most historic figures, as Tim Clark, the Museums communications director describes it.
From all accounts Obscura day was quite a success around the world and I know everyone in DC had a great time. To see videos, pictures, blogs and tweets from all the Obscura Day events, go to obscuraday.com.
For more info on the museum, please go to their website ( and visit them on the campus of the Walter Reid Army Medical Hospital (while it still exists) in Washington DC.

SUMMARY
=======
For decades in the U.S., there have been isolated incidents of removal of Confederate monuments and memorials, although generally opposed in public opinion polls, and several U.S. States have passed laws over 115 years to hinder or prohibit further removals.
In the wake of the Charleston church shooting in June 2015, several municipalities in the United States removed monuments and memorials on public property dedicated to the Confederate States of America. The momentum accelerated in August 2017 after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The removals were driven by the belief that the monuments glorify white supremacy and memorialize a treasonous government whose founding principle was the perpetuation and expansion of slavery. Many of those who object to the removals, like President Trump, believe that the artifacts are part of the cultural heritage of the United States.The vast majority of these Confederate monuments were built during the era of Jim Crow laws (1877–1954) and the Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968). Detractors claim that they were not built as memorials but as a means of intimidating African Americans and reaffirming white supremacy. The monuments have thus become highly politicized; according to Eleanor Harvey, a senior curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a scholar of Civil War history: If white nationalists and neo-Nazis are now claiming this as part of their heritage, they have essentially co-opted those images and those statues beyond any capacity to neutralize them again.In some Southern states, state law restricts or prohibits altogether the removal or alteration of public Confederate monuments. According to Stan Deaton, senior historian at the Georgia Historical Society, These laws are the Old South imposing its moral and its political views on us forever more. This is what led to the Civil War, and it still divides us as a country. We have competing visions not only about the future but about the past.

S.C. state rep vows bill to remove Confederate flag
COLUMBIA, S.C. (CBS News) -- From Charleston, South Carolina, to the statehouse steps in Columbia, there is anger over the Confederate flag and all it represents. The mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston has reignited the debate over whether officials should remove the Confederate flag from state property. Republican state Rep. Doug Brannon plans to introduce a bill to remove the flag, which he acknowledges will likely cost him re-election, reports CBS News' Adriana Diaz. The switch that flipped was the death of my friend Sen. [Clementa] Pinckney... I've been in the House five years. I should have filed that bill five years ago. But the time is now, I can't let my friend the senator's death go without fundamental change in South Carolina, Brannon said. Brannon said he plans to introduce his bill as early as he can, which won't be until December. Other politicians have said they will wait until after funerals can be held for the nine victims of last week's shooting before they weigh on whether the flag should be moved. This isn't the first time the flag has sparked outrage. In 2000, protests led to a compromise: The flag was removed from the Capitol dome, but instead of placing it behind the building, legislators placed it near a Confederate memorial out front. Now old wounds are being reopened. Saturday night, a Confederate memorial in Charleston was spray painted with the words black lives matter, and elsewhere people burned Confederate flags. It is a reminder, and more so an insult to the very soul of African Americans, said Dot Scott, president of the Charleston NAACP chapter. To many like Scott, the flag is a symbol of intolerance and white supremacy. We should not have to continue to be forced to somehow revere the flag, Scott said. But to others, the flag represents the sacrifices thousands of South Carolinians made -- regardless of color -- during the Civil War. We want to remember those men. They are family members, there are pictures on our walls, their names are in our Bibles. They're part of us, their DNA is in us, Randy Burbage of the Sons of Confederate Veterans said. While Burbage said he feels for the families and relatives who died in the mass shooting at Charleston's Emanuel AME church, the flag didn't have anything to do with why [shooting suspect Dylann Roof] did what he did. The flag is now an issue in the Republican presidential race. Former nominee Mitt Romney on Saturday Tweeted: Take down the #ConfederateFlag at the SC Capitol. To many, it is a symbol of racial hatred. Jeb Bush agreed, noting while governor of Florida he ordered the flag moved to a museum where it belonged. In the important primary state of South Carolina, others tried to avoid angering potential voters. My opinion is that we should let the people of South Carolina go through the process of making this decision, former Sen. Rick Santorum said on ABC's This Week. It works here, that's what the statehouse agreed to do, Sen. Lindsey Graham said. 2015 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. Follow us on Twitter @Local12 and LIKE us on Facebook for updates!
