Redipuglia War Memorial, Fogliano Redipuglia, Friuli Venezia Giulia , Italy, Europe
The Redipuglia War Memorial is a World War I memorial located on the Karst Plateau near the village of Fogliano Redipuglia, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. It is the largest war memorial in Italy and one of the largest in the world, housing the remains of 100,187 Italian soldiers killed between 1915 and 1917 in the eleven battles fought on the Karst and Isonzo front. The shrine was built between 1935 and 1938 on Mount Sei Busi, one of the many rocky hills of the Karst Plateau whose possession was bitterly contested during the early battles of the Isonzo. It was designed by architect Giovanni Greppi and solemnly inaugurated on 18 September 1938 in the presence of Benito Mussolini and over 50,000 soldiers who had fought on the Isonzo front in World War I. The Colle di Sant'Elia (St. Elias Hill), a hill located in front of Mount Sei Busi, was already the site of the war cemetery of the Italian Third Army, that had fought on this sector of the front from 1915 to 1917 (the cemetery contained the remains of over 30,000 fallen, that were transferred to the newly built war memorial). The shrine, built on the side of the hill, consists of 22 horizontal platforms of stone, arrayed in step-like progression, hosting the remains of 39,857 identified soldiers, arranged in alphabetic order. The top frieze of each platforms, above the name plaques, reads repetitively Presente (Present). Above the last step, a votive chapel is lined by two large mass burials that contains the remains of 60,330 unknown soldiers. The chapel and two adjacent rooms contain personal items that belonged to Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers. At the base of the memorial, seven sepulchres contain the remains of Prince Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta (the commander of the Third Army, who died in 1931 and asked to be buried among his men) and six generals killed in action. In front of the monument, the Via Eroica (Heroic Path) is flanked by 38 bronze sheet that carry the names of 38 locations of the Karst plateau where the fighting was bloodiest. The fallen buried in the memorial, besides tens of thousands of Army soldiers, include 56 members of the Guardia di Finanza, 72 sailors (the crews of the submarines Medusa and Jalea, sunk in the Adriatic Sea in 1915 and salvaged in the 1950s), and one single woman, Margherita Kaiser Parodi Orlando, a volunteer nurse that died in 1918 while assisting soldiers sick with Spanish flu. The cemetery once had reliefs of Fasces at the base. St. Elias Hill, in front of Mount Sei Busi, formerly the site of the war cemetery of the Third Army, has been turned into a Remembrance Park (Parco della Rimembranza), with memorial stones dedicated to the various branches of the Italian Army and the Italian Armed Forces, and to everyday objects of the soldier (from mess kits to pincers), as well as a display of Italian and Austro-Hungarian artillery pieces. A museum with war relics, reconstructions and panels about the history of the Third Army and the battles of the Isonzo is located between Mount Sei Busi and St. Elias Hill. Italy’s fallen in World War I are commemorated at Redipuglia on 4 November of every year, by the President of the Italian Senate.

Memorial di Pace WAR IS OVER - Guerra finita - Fogliano Redipuglia
Redipuglia and the Isonzo Front in WW1
On 23 May 1915 Italy declared war on Austro Hungary and invaded the dual monarchy on the following day. Due to the failure of the politicians to liase with the military, the offensive was badly organised and slow. It took the Italians several days to occupy the almost undefended plain, giving the Austrians plenty of time to fortify the Alpine border with Italy. In the southern sector, it more or less followed the line of the Isonzo river which gave its name to twelve battles which happened here from 14 June 1915 to October 1917. At the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, Italian CinC, Luigi Cadorna, pushed the line back in the mountains only to be outflanked by the Austrians and Germans after the battle of Caporetto and everything had to be given up in retreat to avoid being outflanked. The Italian monument at Redipuglia commemorates the battles along the Isonzo river and is located very close to Monte Sei Busi, one of the first heights to be captured by the Italians in 1915.

Solemn ceremony in Italy to mark centenary of end of World War 1
(4 Nov 2018) Italiy's president on Sunday marked the centenary of the end of World War I, taking part in a ceremony at the Redipuglia War Memorial in the country's northeast.
Hundreds of people and groups of school children were present as Sergio Mattarella honoured those who lost their lives during the war by laying a wreath at the memorial, the resting place for more than 100,000 soldiers.
Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta and Italian armed forces chief Claudio Graziano were among other attendees at the ceremony.
November 4 has been marked in Italy since 1919 as the Day of National Unity and Armed Forces to commemorate the Italian victory in the First World War and the armistice of Villa Giusti in 1918, which sanctioned the surrender of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
This year, the day coincides with the 100th anniversary of the end of the four-year war that killed more than two million of its troops and left four million wounded.
The Redipuglia memorial was inaugurated in 1938 and is located near Gorizia, in Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the area of the Isonzo front, close to some of the most significant battle sites between the Italian army and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Its stone steps hold the remains of more than 39,000 identified soldiers.
At the end of the steps, two large tombs covered with bronze plates hold the remains of more than 60,000 unknown soldiers.

Fogliano Redipuglia [foʎˈʎaːno ˌrediˈpuʎʎa] (Bisiacco: Foian Redipuia; Friulian: Foian Redipulie; Slovene: Foljan-Sredipolje, German: Radepollach) is a comune (municipality) in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 13 kilometres (8 mi) southwest of Gorizia.
World War I memorial
Fogliano Redipuglia lies at the eastern end of the shifting front of the Italian Campaign against Austria-Hungary (and Germany) in World War I, and today is home to Italy's largest war memorial on Monte Sei Busi in Redipuglia.
The campaign overall featured the dozen or so Battles of the Isonzo including a number in this area but especially the Battle of Caporetto, a heavy defeat for the Italians with 11,000 killed, 20,000 wounded and 265,000 captured. As points of interest, famed World War II German officer Erwin Rommel fought in this battle as a junior officer, and American author Ernest Hemingway drove an ambulance for the Italian Army (see A Farewell to Arms). After Caporetto, the Austria-Hungarian advance was forced to stop anyway due to lack of supplies, and after almost a year the Italians were able to reinforce and regain this territory by destroying the Austro-Hungarian Army in the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, which defeat led to the final end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The huge war memorial from 1938 contains the corpses of 39,857 identified Italian soldiers, and 69,330 unidentified. In a nearby cemetery are buried another around 14,000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers. Trench fortifications can be seen next to the war memorial, as well as a display of large World War I artillery pieces.

Italian National War Memorial
(1926)
Full title reads: Italian National War Memorial inaugurated by King Victor Emmanuel.
Pasubio, Italy.
Various shots of crowd gathered around war memorial; many hold Italian flags, some are in uniform. L/S, looking over heads of crowd, of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and a senior officer standing on memorial steps.
L/S of a tower (the memorial?) on top of a cliff. Soldiers line the path winding down from tower. We see King Victor and entourage of dignitaries and officers walk past them. We see the King get into an open topped car with several officers. As the King's car drives away the soldiers and dignitaries salute, some with their right arms (like Nazi salute).

[4K] - TRIESTE (trailer) - YI M1 (+CANON EOS M100) - Coming soon
This video is a preview/trailer of the soon coming video shot in Trieste, county “Friuli-Venezia Giulia”, a region situated in Italy's northeast which borders Slovenia and Austria. We took a 9 days long vacation with a first, one day, stop in Padova (“Padua”) to visit, for the second time, Venice. We then moved towards the Friuli Venezia Giulia region where we stopped for a 3 nights stay in the area of Duino-Aurisina-Sistiana, a municipal in the province of Trieste, to visit places such as “Grado” (not too far away), well known for its famous beaches and its lagoon, “Aquileia”, an Ancient Roman city in Italy, at the head of the Adriatic sea and at the edge of the lagoons, with its immense archaelogical site and its Patriarcal Basilica which is now also a UNESCO World Heritage site and “Redipuglia” with, in particular, the Redipuglia War Memorial (Italian: Sacrario militare di Redipuglia) which is a World War I memorial located on the Karst Plateau near the village of Fogliano Redipuglia, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. We also had the opportunity to cross a few times the italian borders with Slovenia and travelled around a little bit in this country which appears to be very nice, with beautiful countrysides and spots.
This video is the first of a series of video I will make where I depict the places we visited during our vacation. This one is a short preview/trailer showing some parts of the town of “Trieste”.
