Mareth Victory
Out of Tunisia - now for the last round-up. A night barrage paved the way for the infantry assault, which at once achieved a local success at the end of the line, near the sea. The fighting was bloody with many casualties on both sides. Then General Montgomery took the decision to launch an attack in the direction of El Hamma and it was this out flanking that defeated Rommel. The Americans, under General Patton, had been advancing in a drive to the east from Gafsa and El Guettar. This drew off large forces, both from Rommel and von Arnim. ® With support from the Americans and superb co-operation in the air, General Montgomery had brought off another great victory.
