The China challenge: When military adversaries become friends
For nearly two weeks, the Armies of India and China, nations which frequently face off against one another along the disputed Line of Actual Control, have been working together, as friends. It is called Hand-in-Hand 2015, the fifth joint exercise between the two countries, held this year at the Kunming Military Academy in the Yunnan Province. These are exercises which feature soldiers from both countries training to fight insurgents, a somewhat strange irony since there have been reports of China arming insurgent groups in India's Northeast.

Wushu/Kung Fu School in Kunming, China - Part 2
Sifu Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja stays in Kunming, China and spends time at renowned Sifu's (kung fu teacher) School. This the second video posted and is better quality filming than the first as it was shot during daytime at the school so it's not as dark.
The Sifu is the son of a very famous teacher who started the school many years ago. I was able to spend time at his school and learn about so many different approaches to Wushu and the more traditional Kung Fu (gong fu) methods of training from the Wudang lineage. You will see both old (traditional) and new (wushu) demonstrated in the small amount of video I took while there. The Sifu here has students from all over the world that come to train.
Background on Sifu's renowned father:
Sha Guozheng was born in 1904, in Jung Chan County, Shandong Province. It was an area renowned for martial artists and Sha began training at a very early age. He loved to read the Wuxia novels, still popular in China today, about good martial artists triumphing the cause of the poor and oppressed. When young he studied with many different masters and many different styles.
At the age of 16 he moved to Kao Shou, and studied hard for 5 years learning a variety of forms including Shi Lu Tan Tui (10 Roads Springing Legs), Liu He Qiang (6 Harmony Spear), Si Men Dao (4 gate Broadsword), etc. In 1920 he met his first Bagau Zhang teacher, Wang Che-Cheng (a student of Dong Hai-Chuan's student Wang Li-Te.) He learned Lion style Bagua Zhang and Baxian Jian (8 Immortal Sword) from him.
In 1926 he moved to Tianjin, near Beijing, and began to study with Jiang Rong-Qiao. Sha was a very serious student and hard-working student. At this time he learned Bagua Zhang, Xingyi Quan, Taiji Quan. One night in 1928 Sha left the Tianjin Martial Arts Training Association building after practice and was going home. On his way there he saw three drunken, foreign sailors taking liberties with a Chinese woman. Sha became very angry and in a short space of time had rescued the lady and flattened the foreigners. For this act the Tianjin Martial Arts Training Association began to call him Shao Shitou (Little Stone) as he was small in size, but was as hard and fast as a stone skimming over water. They also honoured him with a couplet The foreign toads lusting over the swan's flesh; the small stone punishing the foreign devils.
In 1931 Sha moved to Korea to continue his studies with Wang Che-Cheng. Korea was under Japanese rule at this time. A Japanese soldier came to Wang's school after seeing Sha demonstrating at a festival. He wanted to spar with Sha, he was happy to and asked the soldier to choose his weapon, a long spear, he gave Sha a sword. The Japanese soldier had a reputation as being a fierce fighter with little regard for others. Sha simply evaded his attacks without countering. Finally when the soldier became unsure of his strategy Sha attacked hitting his opponent with the flat blade on the shoulder. With arm paralysed the soldier was beaten.
Moving to Anhui in 1946 Sha invited Jiang Rong-Qiao to teach at the Wuhu Martial Arts School. He lived with Sha for 6 months both researching wushu. This formed the basis for his later books.
Master Sha moved to Kumning in 1949 and met Peng Qing and He Fu-Sheng, among other great wushu masters. After the Cultural Revolution Sha became coach for the Yunnan Wushu team. Master Sha was also proficient in medicine having spent time gathering healing skills from his many Shifu's. Sha healed many people always refusing payment. In 1983 he gave his medical formulas to the Government for the benefit of others. Master Sha Guozheng passed away in 1992.

Chinese Military Dogs Get Spotlight at International Army Games 2016
Chinese military dogs and their handlers have taken the top four positions on Wednesday in the first individual Loyal Friend race, which is part of the International Military Games 2016 being held in Russia's capital of Moscow.
Sixteen military dogs and their handlers from four countries, namely China, Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, participated in the first international Loyal Friend contest, which included a 50-meter sharpshooting competition and a three-kilometer race.
The competition was held in Dmitrov, 65 kilometers to the north of Moscow. Russia and Kazakhstan came second and third, respectively. The final result of the Loyal Friend competition will be announced on Aug. 10.
China's military dog Pete was the first to go, and won 98 points.
My dog did an excellent job today. We had tacit cooperation and gave out our best. I'm very satisfied with the result, said Ding Tao, Pete's trainer.
Another Chinese military dog Tianya had trouble adapting to the new environment, so it got only 97 points.
The third one, named Tiger, won 99 points.
It did great today. Tiger and I were the 14th to compete, and we won 99 points. We did well, said Jin Quanduo, Tiger's trainer.
The last Chinese military dog, named Allen, won 100 points with its precision, speed and fierceness.
The 'Loyal Friend' contest mainly tests the dogs' loyalty and their tacit understanding with their trainers, said Yang Yuhai, Allen's trainer.
Officers from other countries were impressed in the Chinese team.
This is the first time I saw Chinese team performing. They and their dogs showed high-level of defense and service capabilities as well as military qualities. I am very impressed by their performance, said a Russian officer.
Nineteen countries are competing in 23 Army Games events. The Army Games 2016 tournament is being held in Russia and Kazakhstan from July 30 to Aug. 13.

China protests US defense law letting Taiwan military exchanges
It's a controversial US defense budget law with an unprecedented section on military exchanges with Taiwan. If carried out, the senior military exchange program will happen at least once each year in both the US and Taiwan. The Chinese foreign ministry did not take the law sitting down, saying they've sent a strongly worded complaint with the US. How will this US defense budget affect China-US relations? We get the answers from Yang Xiyu of the China Institute of International Studies; Rick Dunham from the Global Business Journalism program at Tsinghua University; and by phone, Joanna Lei, a former legislator and chief executive officer of the Chunghua 21st Century think-tank in Taiwan.

LIVE Fire Chinese navy kicks off drills in South China SEA
Chinese warships conduct live-fire combat drills in South China Sea. China builds new aircraft carrier in show of strength to Washington
China intends to beef up its maritime presence by building a second aircraft carrier. Beijing wants to exert its presence in the South China Sea, after complaining of “provocations” from the US, as well as defending its interests in the region.
Little is known about China’s aircraft carrier program, however a spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Yang Yujun, said the ship had been designed in China and was being built in the port of Dalian.
China has a long coastline and a vast maritime area under our jurisdiction. To safeguard our maritime sovereignty, interests and rights is the sacred mission of the Chinese armed forces, Yang said, as cited by Reuters.
The Defense Ministry spokesman added that the aircraft carrier will be able to operate J-15 fighter jets and will also have a ski-jump take-off. China’s only other aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, was purchased from Ukraine in 1998 before being refitted in China.

China has been looking to increase its maritime defense capabilities, as it exerts its claims to the South China Sea.
The US has many aircraft carriers that are traveling all over the place in the South China Sea, which have caused problems for us. Having a second aircraft carrier reduces the pressure on us. It will keep us from being bullied,” a Shanghai-based naval expert, who asked to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters.
Also in December, the Chinese Navy commissioned its third Type 052D Kunming-class destroyer, ‘Hefei’, armed with surface-to-surface missiles as its primary assault weapon. Beijing says it plans to build at least 10 warships, while they will be based at the naval complex in Sanya on the island of Hainan.
“My men have familiarized themselves with the advanced equipment and weapons [onboard the ship]. In the near future, we will focus on training, aiming to make the ship become fully operational within a short period,” Hefei’s captain, Commander Zhao Yanquan, told China Daily on December 14.
Two weeks ago, China filed a complaint with the Pentagon after a US nuclear-capable B-52 bomber flew over a man-made island in the South China Sea that China claims gives it sovereignty over the surrounding waters. Beijing said the move was a “provocation.”
It urged the United States to immediately adopt measures to put an end to such kind of dangerous actions, in order not to impact the two countries' military relations,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Over the past few years China has reclaimed several islands in the South China Sea and built infrastructure on them capable of supporting combat missions of the Chinese Air Force. Beijing insists that the effort is primarily civilian and is meant to make South China Sea, the region with one of the heaviest maritime traffic in the world, most of it China-bound, a safer place.
The US rejects Beijing's claim and occasionally sends its warplanes and warships through the 12 nautical mile area around the artificial islands, which China sees as its exclusive zone. In late October, the US guided missile destroyer USS Lassen sailed close to Subi Reef with one such mission, provoking an angry rebuke from China.
The South China Sea is believed to have massive deposits of oil and gas, while around $5 trillion of shipping trade passes through the area per year.
