Switzerland's Jungfrau Region: Best of the Alps
© 2002 Rick Steves' Europe | If Heidi is alive, she's in this sky-high corner of the Swiss Alps, with cowbells ringing on breathtaking ridges. After settling into a traditional village where locals scythe hay by hand, we hike, bike, blast an alphorn, get sprayed by waterfalls raging deep inside a mountain, and munch muesli for breakfast at 10,000 feet. For a finale, we ride Europe's highest railway up the mighty Jungfrau for hot cocoa, glacier sledding, and oh-wow views.
Derwent Valley Mills - Derbyshire, England - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Derwent Valley Mills is a World Heritage Site along the River Derwent in Derbyshire, England, designated in December 2001. It is administered by the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership. The modern factory, or 'mill', system was born here in the 18th century to accommodate the new technology for spinning cotton developed by Richard Arkwright. With advancements in technology, it became possible to produce cotton continuously. The system was adopted throughout the valley, and later spread so that by 1788 there were over 200 Arkwright-type mills in Britain. Arkwright's inventions and system of organising labour was exported to Europe and the United States.
Water-power was first introduced to England by John Lombe at his silk mill in Derby in 1719, but it was Richard Arkwright who applied water-power to the process of producing cotton in the 1770s. His patent of a water frame allowed cotton to be spun continuously and meant it could be produced by unskilled workers. Cromford Mill and Cromford was the site of Arkwright's first mill, and his system of production and worker's housing was copied throughout the valley. To ensure the presence of a labour force, it was necessary to construct housing for the mill workers. Thus, new settlements were established by mill owners around the mills -- sometimes developing a pre-existing community -- with their own amenities such as schools, chapels, and markets. Most of the housing still exists and is still in use. Along with the transport infrastructure form part of the site. A transport infrastructure was built to open new markets for the mills' produce.
Mills and worker's settlements were established at Belper, Darley Abbey, and Milford by Arkwright's competitors. Arkwright-type mills were so successful that sometimes they were copied without paying royalties to Richard Arkwright. The cotton industry in the Derwent Valley went into decline in the first quarter of the 19th century as the market shifted towards Lancashire which was better position in relation to markets and raw materials. The mills and their associated buildings are well preserved and have been reused since the cotton industry declined. Many of the buildings within the World Heritage Site are also listed buildings and Scheduled Monuments. Some of the mills now contain museums and are open to the public. SOURCE :WIKIPEDIA

The title of this documentary could be TOMORROW'S WAR, TODAY. We have five destinations in Greece: Thessaloniki, Apopigadi, Eastern Chalkidiki, Asopos river and Volos. The war on water is not a future probability, but it's a reality familiar to some of our fellow citizens for many years now.
• Volos: 20 years of struggle against the appropriation of natural springs on Mount Pelion in order to be used for Volos' industrial area needs. People are now opposing the decision of Volos' Municipal Company of Water and Sewage to get Pelion's fresh water chlorinated, while it is distributed to the city through asbestos cement water pipes.
• Asopos: Industrial activities have contaminated Asopos river and the aquifier with hexavalent chromium, which is responsible for the high level of deaths caused by cancer in the agricultural area of Asopos basin. Epidemiological evidence show an increase of cancer deaths from 6% in 1988 to 36% in 2004.
• Thessaloniki: The ongoing privatization of Thessaloniki Water and Sewage Company -- the role of water multinational Suez and local contractor Aktor. The goverment is now trying to block a referendum on the privatization, promoted by both grassroot movements and the area's municipalities.
• Apopigadi: The wind farm on top of Apopigadi mountain in Crete is not an environment-friendly investment, but a threat to local water resources and wild animals which was imposed to local people with violent police action. The investor in this case is the well-known French multinational EDF.
• Skouries: The Chalkidiki goldmines that now belong to a Canadian multinational company are responsible for the contamination of local water resources and reserves. Local people opposing the investment are now prosecuted for terrorism.

SUMMARY
=======
Oregon ( (listen) OR-i-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region on the West Coast of the United States. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary along Washington state, while the Snake River delineates much of its eastern boundary along Idaho. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. Oregon is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843 before the Oregon Territory was created in 1848. Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles (250,000 km2), Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 27th most populous U.S. state. The capital, Salem, is the second most populous city in Oregon, with 164,549 residents. Portland, with 632,309 residents, is the most populous and ranks as the 26th most populous city in the United States. The Portland metropolitan area, which also includes the city of Vancouver, Washington, to the north, ranks the 23rd largest metro area in the nation, with a population of 2,389,228.
Oregon is one of the most geographically diverse states in the U.S., marked by volcanoes, abundant bodies of water, dense evergreen and mixed forests, as well as high deserts and semi-arid shrublands. At 11,249 feet (3,429 m), Mount Hood, a stratovolcano, is the state's highest point. Oregon's only national park, Crater Lake National Park, comprises the caldera surrounding Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. The state is also home to the single largest organism in the world, Armillaria ostoyae, a fungus that runs beneath 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) of the Malheur National Forest.Because of its diverse landscapes and waterways, Oregon's economy is largely powered by various forms of agriculture, fishing, and hydroelectric power. Oregon is also the top timber producer of the contiguous United States, and the timber industry dominated the state's economy in the 20th century. Technology is another one of Oregon's major economic forces, beginning in the 1970s with the establishment of the Silicon Forest and the expansion of Tektronix and Intel. Sportswear company Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, is the state's largest public corporation with an annual revenue of $30.6 billion.Like its northern neighbor Washington, Oregon is one of the most socially progressive states in the country. Same-sex marriage in Oregon was recognized in 2013 before its full legalization in 2015, cannabis is legal for recreational and medicinal use in the state, and assisted suicide is also permitted by law in Oregon.

J. Krishnamurti - Washington DC 1985 - Public Talk 1 - In the present is the whole of time
Summary:
Why are we, after this long evolution, perpetually in conflict?
Being absorbed in a poem, a face, is that beauty?
Why has humanity, each one of us, accepted fear as a way of life?
Why do we live, act on the basis of thought? What is the relationship to time of thought?
Can there be total mutation now, in all our behaviour, way of living, thinking, feeling?
If you had no memory at all, could you think?
Memory arises from knowledge, experience. Is experience different from the experiencer? If there is no experiencer, is there experience?
