Driving through the community of Milk River heading to Milk River Bath Hotel and Spa, Clarendon, Jamaica.
Milk River Bath is mineral spa in the South West corner of Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. Owned by the Government of Jamaica since its opening in 1794, it now has about 6 public baths and a hotel with about 20 bedrooms. It claims that its warm waters are more radioactive than some other notable spas.
Milk River Bath is located about 2 miles South of the village of Milk River. The mineral spring rises at the foot of a hill side where Carpenter's Mountains meet the Vere Plains. The Milk River runs past the spa at a distance of about 100m on the other side of the road. The spa is about 12 miles South of the A2 road at Toll Gate. This approach road is often badly pot-holed in some places but is nevertheless passable with care in an ordinary car.

The waters are 9 times as radioactive as those at Bath, England, and three times those at Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
The 6 public baths are located in small private rooms off a seating area. The rooms are smartly tiled. Each can hold several people but the area for changing is really only suitable for one person at a time. The tepid water flows swiftly through the bath. The standard time for soaking is 15 minutes (for J$600 in 2008).
The hotel above the baths has about 20 bedrooms mostly ensuite. There is a cocktail bar and a restaurant. Food seems to be available specially cooked out of regular mealtimes.
Nearby is a swimming pool fed by the mineral waters, but this is not always open.
It is said that during the 17th century a slave, after suffering a bad beating from his master and left for dead, returned a while later fully recovered. His master made a deal with him. The deal was for the slave to show him where he got healed and he would never punish him again.

Jamaica has been blessed with several naturally occurring mineral springs with just the right combination of temperature and mineral deposits to offer therapeutic properties. These natural wonders are famed to be among the best in the world, with radioactive levels and mineral deposition far exceeding other famous hot springs.
Most, if not all, originate from underground wells deep below the surface, with some also flowing through limestone caves and/or over mineral-rich rocks, before ending in various pools.
Over the years, several of these springs have been discovered, and more are believed to exist, untapped or unpublicized. In this video I will have a look at at five of the more popular ones
FIRE WATER HOT SPRINGS IN ST ANN
The Windsor Mineral Spring (more commonly known as Fire Water) is a small pool of water with a very unusual quality. The pool contains water which can catch fire! This phenomenon is believed to be caused by a high concentration of sulphur and other natural gases in the water. This combination gives it the ability to ignite – the source of its healing power. This component of the water was said to be discovered by accident, when the flames from a nearby fire got out of hand and ended up in the water, igniting it.
BLACK RIVER SPA IN ST ELIZABETH
This a cold water mineral spring, rich in sulphur and other minerals, it was one of the more popular spas in the island up until the 1930s.. The spring is fed constantly from underground, and is said to have been a Taino dump site.
The spa was discovered during British slavery, and was said to be used by the then estate owner to treat his slaves’ rheumatism and other illnesses.
Over the years; through various tragedies and changes in ownership; the spa has deteriorated, but it is still frequented by locals, due to its fabled healing properties.
BATH IN ST THOMAS
Bath Mineral Fountain in St Thomas is rich in magnesium, sulfur and lime, and consists of two springs flowing through the rocks on bamboo pipes. One of these springs is piping hot, while the other is cold. The water is mixed before it enters the bathhouses, which are built for guests.According to legend, the spring was discovered in the 1690s by a runaway slave, who had been plagued for years by ulcers on his leg. Legend has it that he bathed in the stream and noticed, the next day, that it his skin began to heal.
News of this healing fountain soon spread, attracting visitors from all over Jamaica. In 1699, the property owner sold the 1,130 acre estate, including the spring, to the government. Today, visitors from all over still flock to location which is said to still have the same healing properties as when it was first discovered.
ROCKFORT IN KINGSTON
Rockfort Mineral Bath is one of the oldest public facilities in Kingston. It is actually a declared National Heritage Site and is officially a part of the Carib Cement Company’s complex, which also includes the fort which gives it its name.
The therapeutic property of the mineral-rich waters flow from the rockfort hills, and is believed to have surfaced after the powerful 1907 earthquake. The spa which is operated commercially has several bathhouses, supplied with warm water, and a large swimming pool.
Like the other mineral spas, Rock Fort Mineral Spa is believed to have healing properties.
MILK RIVER IN CLARENDON
The Milk River Bath and Spa sits on the bank of the Milk River in Clarendon. It is among the most radioactive waters in the world. As such it isn’t recommended to spend more than 20 minutes immersed in the waters per day. It contains high levels of magnesium, calcium, sulphate and natural chlorideAccording to legend, the bath was first discovered by a slave who was beaten severely and chained by his owner, Jonathan Ludford. The slave managed to escape and went to hide in the woods and bathed in a salty natural spring which he found. The slave's wounds healed rapidly, he then returned to Mr Ludford who was so shocked at the recovery that he made a deal to never punish the slave again if he was shown the spring’s location. He bought the property and used it until he died and then it was willed to the Jamaican government. In 1974 public baths were constructed there, they have been open to the public ever since. There’s a hotel built above it with basic accommodations and access to the baths included in the price.

Bath - St. Thomas Parish
The Bath Fountain, located in the foothills of the John Crow mountains in St. Thomas are reputed to have healing qualities. The natural spring waters are believed to aid in the recovery of a wide range of ailments, including gout, rheumatism and skin conditions. There are two springs, one cold and one piping hot which flow through the rocks on bamboo pipes.
The active elements in the water are lime, sulphur and magnesium. The mineral concentrations are not as high as those found in the Milk River or Rockfort mineral baths but it is believed that the natural high temperature of the waters provide additional healing power.
History of Bath Fountain
According to legend the baths were discovered in the 17th century by a runaway slave suffering from ulcers on his leg. He stumbled across the spring and washed his wounded limb in the water. He noticed the next day that his leg began to rapidly heal.
News of the healing fountain spread and soon the spring (then named The Bath of St Thomas the Apostle) attracted visitors from all over Jamaica. In 1699 Colonel Stanton (the owner of the land on which the spring stood) sold the 1,130 acre estate to the government. The Government developed the fountain and built a hospital on the site offering free treatment using the magical waters.
Guest houses sprang up nearby and many wealthy merchants built homes here, establishing Bath as a fashionable spa town.
Over the years the spa fell out of favour and has fallen in to a state of disrepair.
Farquhar Beach South-JAMAICA
Near to Milk River Mineral Bath is Farquhar Beach, a small place but a good place. You can hire a boat and guide to take you to the mouth of the Alligator Hole River in search of crocodiles and manatees. On this place is no fish-market, no job, no tourism, no water-tank, but very friendly people and I feel a Welcome. All day come the * Water-man * and bring fresh-water for drinking, cooking . . . . water for life !!!
Big up for all the people and for the * Water-man * and his family !!!

I had a wonderful time. And so did family.
I wouldn't say its baby friendly. But I brought some water from the bath home to bathe the little one.
We paid JMD$4500 per person. I would say it is well worth it. I would have paid more at a Spa. lol
