TURNING THE TIDE / Travel the Marsh
TURNING THE TIDE takes the viewer into two urban wetlands in the most densely-populated state in the nation, New Jersey. The Hackensack Meadowlands and the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh were once used as landfills, but today they are being slowly nursed back to health through conservation measures. TIDE was awarded a CINE Gold Eagle and a World Medal at the New York Festivals.
This is an online video piece I edited after the 30-minute program was completed. It follows a typical tour into the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh from a landing in Bordentown, New Jersey, where kayaks and canoes go in with the tide and then return with the tide's change. Prof. Mary Leck is a great guide and tours happen often.

Snake Hill on the Hackensack
Welcome to beautiful Secaucus, NJ. Laurel Hill Park was the quarry site of the Hudson glacial palisade, Snake Hill. Some reports claim it's a volcano! The swing bridge, (40.75831,-74.093492), unused since 1996, on the Erie line to Boonton was left open in 2002. It is now serviced by the soon to be replaced Amtrak bridge. Over 350 trains cross this bridge each day, carrying 180,000 passengers. Once an $8 billlion stimulus is allocated here (40.753645,-74.095037), plans to create a 3,000-mile bicycle route from Maine to Florida will move forward. Above the park is the 1952 NJTPK high bridge over the Hackensack serving 110,000 vehicles a day.
