Problems with website traffic on the path from Paris to Spain along the stretch travelling through the Tarn valley near the community of Millau, throughout the summer when the roadways ended up being jammed with vacation website traffic, required building of a bridge to span the valley. The first strategies were discussed in 1987 by CETE, and by October 1991, the choice was made to build a high crossing of the Tarn Stream by a structure of around 2,500 m (8,200 ft). During 1993-- 1994 the government sought advice from 7 architects and eight structural engineers. Throughout 1995-- 1996, a second interpretation research study was made by five connected engineer groups and architectural designers. In January 1995, the federal government released an affirmation of public passion to obtain layout approaches for a competition.
In July 1996, the jury decided in favour of a cable-stayed style with several periods, as suggested by the Sogelerg consortium (Michel Virlogeux as well as Norman Foster). The choice to continue by grant of agreement was made in May 1998; after that in June 2000 the competition for the building contract was launched, open to four consortia. In March 2001 Eiffage established the subsidiary Compagnie Eiffage du Viaduc de Millau (CEVM) as well as was stated winner of the competition and awarded the prime contract in August.

The Millau Viaduct is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the valley of the River Tarn near Millau in southern France.
Designed by the French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster, it is the tallest bridge in the world with one mast's summit at 343 metres above the base of the structure. It is the 12th highest bridge deck in the world, being 270 metres between the road deck and the ground below. Millau Viaduct is part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Montpellier. Construction cost was approximately €400 million. It was formally inaugurated on 14 December 2004, and opened to traffic on 16 December.
The bridge has been consistently ranked as one of the great engineering achievements of all time. The bridge received the 2006 International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Outstanding Structure Award.
Some technical notes
The pier dimensions are as follows:
In the longitudinal direction: 16 to 17 meters
In the lateral direction: variable from 10 meters at the pylon head to 27 at the foot of the highest pier.
The piers split into two separate shafts around 90 meters below deck level. Each shaft is vertically post-tensioned using 8 19T15S cables.
The shaft dimension in the longitudinal direction are also variable from 5 meters at the head to 8.60 meters where the join.
The total height of the pylons is 87 meters. Their shape is that of an inverted Y in the longitudinal direction. The height of the legs of the Y is 38 meters.
The deck is cable-stayed. The stays are arranged in two planes with 11 stays each in a sem-fan arrangement. Deck anchors are spaced at 12.51 meters.
Each pylon has a weight of 650 tons and a height of nearly 89 meters. The assembly was done behind the abutments. They were then transported horizontally on Kamag trucks to the final location where they were lifted and rotated into place using a temporary structure.

THE MILLAU BRIDGE
Located in France the Millau Viaduct with the height of 343 m is the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world.
The Millau Viaduct, designed by the English architect Lord Norman Foster, crosses the cloud-covered valley of the river Tarn in Millau.
The bridge appears to float on the clouds despite the fact that it has seven pillars and a roadway of 1½ miles in length.
On first sight, the impression is of boats sailing on a sea of mist.
The roadway threads through the seven pillars like thread through the eye of a needle.
The bridge was entirely privately financed and cost 394 million euros (524 million dollars).
The Bridge opened in December 2004 and is possibly one of the most breath taking bridges ever built.
