Millennium Underground Railway in Budapest, Hungary - The 2nd Oldest Metro Line
the 2nd oldest metro line in the world.
In 2002, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
M1, the oldest of the metro lines operating in Budapest, has been in constant operation since 1896.
The original purpose of the first metro line was to facilitate transport to the Budapest City Park along the elegant Andrássy Avenue without building surface transport affecting the streetscape. The National Assembly accepted the metro plan in 1870 and German firm Siemens & Halske AG was commissioned for the construction, starting in 1894. It took 2,000 workers using up-to-date machinery less than two years to complete. This section was built entirely from the surface (with the cut-and-cover method). Completed by the deadline, it was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium (the thousandth anniversary of the arrival of the Magyars), by emperor Franz Joseph. One original car is preserved at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, United States.

A jármű története az átalakításokat, módosításokat tekintve megegyezik a többi favázas kocsiéval, leszámítva, hogy feszültségmentes üzemben is tudjon menteni akkumulátoros kocsivá alakították. Az elképzelés nem hozta a várt eredményt. A kocsi a Récsei buszgarázsba lett átvontatva, ott várta a sorsát, majd vissza hozták a FAV járműtelepre. A bontási inváziót túlélte.

The Fluffies attended a family gathering to celebrate the life of Eric’s father who passed away in May. To get to our cousin’s place, we took the second oldest underground railway in Europe known as Line 1, but officially referred to as the Millennium Underground Railway, Metro 1 or M1). It is the oldest line of the Budapest Metro and was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium of Hungary.

Budapest Metro line M1 Millennium Underground Railway
A ride on the second oldest electric underground system, opened in 1896 and keeping its original behaviour. Ticket purchase and control is still being held manually on the platform as there are no ticket machines and barriers. The rolling stock used is from 1972 built by Ganz.

1896. május 2-án, szombaton délután elindult Európa - rekordidő alatt épült - első motorkocsis üzemű földalatti vasútja (a londoni eredetileg gőzhajtású volt). Reggel 6 és este 11 között 4 percenként követték egymást a szerelvények. Ferenc József 1896. május 8-án utazott a földalatti vasúton, melynek emlékére az üzemeltető cég felvehette a Ferenc József Földalatti Villamos Vasút Rt. nevet. A vonalat az akkori közlekedési szabályok szerinti „balra tarts elrendezéssel építették ki (ezért voltak a lejáratok sokáig „fordítva)

HU: 2012. április 28-án, egy évvel a 115. születésnap után, újból közlekedett a 11-es pályaszámú favázas nosztalgia földalatti kocsi a Millenniumi Földalatti Vasúton, azaz az 1-es metrón. A nosztalgia kocsi ismét csak a két végállomáson, a Vörösmarty téren és a Mexikói úton állt meg, a közbenső állomásokon áthaladt, mivel a kocsi alacsony befogadóképessége miatt csak a regisztrált utasok utazhattak rajta. A programot a BKV Zrt. szervezte.
EN: On 28th April 2012, one year after the 115th birthday, the nostalgic half-timbered MILLFAV car nr. 11 ran again on the Millennium Underground, or on Metro Line 1. The nostalgic car stopped just at the two final stations called Vörösmarty tér and Mexikói út, so it passed the intermediate stations because just the registrated passengers could travel by the car because of its low capacity. This programme was organized by the BKV Ltd.
Budapest Millennium Subway (Budapest Millenniumi Földalatti Vasút)
This film shows the oldest subway system in continental Europe, and the second oldest in the world (after the London Underground): The Millennium Subway in Budapest, Hungary, which was inaugurated in 1896.
The subway runs mostly under Andrássi Út from the city center to Városliget (city park). It's stations are really beautiful and the line is operated by a fleet of articulated low floor cars. Since these cars are quite small and cannot take too many passengers, there is a train running every 1.5 minutes.
This film shows the subway, some of the stations and also a short ride from Hősök Tere to Kodály Körönd. I just love the sound of these cars. :-)

HU: 115 éves a Kisföldalatti! :-) Ebből az alkalomból 2011. május 8-án egy korhűen renovált 115 éves, 11-es pályaszámú kocsi közlekedett a Millenniumi Földalatti Vasúton (az 1-es metróvonalon). A kocsi csak a két végállomáson, a Vörösmarty téren és a Mexikói úton állt meg, a többi állomáson áthaladt, így a hely szűke miatt csak a regisztrált utasok tudtak utazni ezen a muzeális kocsin. Az utasok ezen kívül megtekinthették a Deák Ferenc téren található Földalatti Múzeumot, valamint a Mexikói úti végállomásnál található diszpécser-központot is. Ezt a programot a BKV Zrt. szervezte. The Metro 1 (Officially: Millennium Underground Railway or M1) is the oldest line of the Budapest Metro system. Known in Budapest simply as the underground (a földalatti), while the M2, M3 and M4 are called metró. It is the third oldest underground railway in the world after Tünel in İstanbul,Turkey[1] (the first being the London Underground), and the first on the European mainland. It was built from 1894 to 1896. In 2002, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Metro 1 runs northeast from the city center on the Pest side under Andrássy út to the Városliget, or City Park.
