My Day in Eastern Nevada
Recorded June 3, 2019
On day #11 of my trip I traveled 328 miles driving from Cedar City, Utah to Ely, Nevada. The highlight of the day was Cathedral Gorge State Park which is located in a long, narrow valley in southeastern Nevada, where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. The park’s beauty began with explosive volcanic activity that, with each eruption, deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick.
After leaving Cathedral Gorge I paid a visit to the nearby historic town of Pioche, population 1002.
Next it was a boring 120 mile drive across eastern Nevada before I arrived at Great Basin National Park. From the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak, to the sage-covered foothills, Great Basin National Park is a place to sample the stunning diversity of the larger Great Basin region.
My last stop of the day was in Ely where I visited the Nevada Northern Railway Museum and the White Pine County Courthouse before ending my day at the local La Quinta Inn.

Goldfield
Goldfield is one of the best examples of a boom to bust gold rush town. Located 26 miles south of Tonopah, Nevada, Goldfield was founded in 1902 when gold was discovered in the Grandpa mining district. This was a rare post 1900 major gold discovery in Nevada. Some people believe the town's name, Grandpa, meant the camp was the granddaddy of all gold camps. The elected officials changed the name to Goldfield in 1903 because they thought it would be easier to promote a town named Goldfield than Grandpa.

Loneliest Road in America #1: Cedar City, Utah- Panaca, Nevada - Cathedral Gorge, Nevada 2016-06-05
This video begins a full-day drive from the southern Utah city of Cedar City to Reno in far west Nevada, featuring green spring time desert hills and fields. At video #3 of this day's drive, the trip joins US 50, nicknamed The Loneliest Road in America, though the traffic is light and the road lonely enough for carefree driving long before reaching US 50.

Panaca was southern Nevada's first permanent settlement, founded as a Mormon colony in 1864. It was originally part of Washington County, Utah, but the congressional redrawing of boundaries in 1866 shifted Panaca into Nevada. It is the only community in Nevada to be dry (forbidding the sale of alcoholic beverages), and the only community in Nevada besides Boulder City that prohibits gambling.

Moon Caves - unique slot canyons and tunnels in Cathedral Gorge State Park
One of the best state parks in Nevada is located between Panaca and Pioche on Highway 93, Cathedral Gorge. The best and more accessible way to explore the stunning bentonite cliffs is to hike into either the Moon Caves region of the park, or the Cathedral Caves region. Fair warning, neither of these spots really feature caves, but instead amazing sedimentary rock slot canyons that one can spend hours exploring. Due to its location, visitors should definitely visit Cathedral Gorge on the way to Great Basin National Park, but should take proper precautions to avoid heatstroke and stay hydrated, as temperatures in the park regularly exceed 90 degrees. For those that are willing to take that risk, the reward is an otherworldly expanse of exploration.

Cathedral Gorge State Park - Campground Review/ Slot Canyon Hike
This video describes the Cathedral Gorge State Park near Panaca, Nevada the way it was in October of 2018. The small park has 22 camping sites and in 1935 became one of Nevada's original 4 state parks. The park lies in Meadow Valley, in south eastern Nevada, which was once a lake approximately 1 million years ago. As the lake drained the gullies and canyons present now were formed by erosion of the sand and gravel that was once lake bottom.
We explored around the nearby slot canyons and there are more trails here as well, namely, Miller Point, Juniper Draw, Eagle Point and Bullionville Cemetery Trail.
The nearby historic mining town of Pioche is worth checking out as well, especially if you are interested in mining history.

Cathedral Gorge
Cathedral Gorge is located in Central/Eastern Nevada near the small town of Panaca. Gorge is somewhat an inappropriate term since the ravines do not exceed a depth of much more than fifty feet. The unique formations are clay and volcanic ash remnants of an ancient lakebed. As the landscape changed and water drained from the lake, the wind and rain caused erosion of the soft bentonite clay. The result was brightly colored cliffs and spires with many narrow crevices at the edges of Meadow Valley.
