Chattanooga Update - August 29, 2013
First of all, Highway 64 in Polk County has been closed after a large rock slide last night.
The slide happened in the same place a major slide occurred in 2010.
That slide shut down the road through the Ocoee Gorge for more than five months.
When it reopened, a rock-fall fence was installed to catch any future debris.
That fence was under pressure on Monday. Our photographer captured these shots of rocks falling into the fencing area.
In last night's slide, officials say the fence held back most of the material, but now the fenced area is full and in danger of overflowing.
TDOT officials say the road will remain closed in the meantime, which means an 80-mile detour.

Yesterday, the state rested its case against the mom charged with murder in the heat stroke deaths of her three and five year old boys.
Prosecutors showed slides of the cramped house where Tasha Bates lived with her sons, filled with trash and traces of meth and heroin. One witness called it, quote, a classic meth lab.
But Bates' attorneys raised doubts about whether any of the drug-related materials could be directly linked to the mom.
And much of the testimony centered on how hot temperatures could have affected a car and the boys' bodies.
Bates originally claimed she found the boys unconscious outside the car, but prosecutors say she later changed her story.
The boys' grandmother said the boys played in the car often. They knew how to work the broken doors, and even how to start the ignition.
One investigator says it's possible the boys could have fallen asleep in the car when it was cooler and just not awakened.
The defense will present its arguments today. We'll have live coverage at Timesfreepress.com.

Senator Bob Coker says the United States should make surgical strikes against Syria.
Corker opposes sending in ground forces, but he says he'd support a limited air attack or use of cruise missiles.
The proposed attack would target Syrian military involved in the recent chemical weapons attack on hundreds of Syrian people.
Corker says he hopes the White House will call Congress back from summer recess to authorize the strikes.

Chattanooga is a city located along the Tennessee River near the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Tennessee. With an estimated population of 179,139 in 2017, it is the fourth-largest city in Tennessee and one of the two principal cities of East Tennessee, along with Knoxville. Served by multiple railroads and Interstate highways, Chattanooga is a transit hub. Chattanooga lies 118 miles (190 km) northwest of Atlanta, Georgia, 112 miles (180 km) southwest of Knoxville, Tennessee, 134 miles (216 km) southeast of Nashville, Tennessee, 102 miles (164 km) northeast of Huntsville, Alabama, and 147 miles (237 km) northeast of Birmingham, Alabama.
The city, with a downtown elevation of approximately 680 feet (210 m), lies at the transition between the ridge-and-valley portion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. Surrounded by mountains and ridges, the official nickname for Chattanooga is Scenic City, reinforced by the city's reputation for outdoor activities. Unofficial nicknames include River City, Chatt, Nooga, Chattown, and Gig City, referencing Chattanooga's claims that it has the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere.Chattanooga is internationally known for the 1941 song Chattanooga Choo Choo by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. Chattanooga is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and Chattanooga State Community College.
The city has its own typeface, Chatype, which was launched in August 2012. According to the Nooga.com website, this marks the first time that an American city has its own custom-made typeface and also the first time a crowd-funded custom-made typeface has been used for any municipality in the world.

Does Eerie Photo From Scene of Deadly Crash Show Stairway to Heaven?
Following a fatal car crash in Georgia last month, a photo captured a beam of light shining down on the wreckage, leaving many to believe it was an illumination from heaven. Hannah Simmons, 23, her 9-month old baby and her best friend all died in the accident after Simmons lost control of her car. Anisa Gannon was on her way to work when she came upon the scene and took the photo. At the time, she didn't know anyone died nor did she notice the beam of light.

Lot Lizard: Monica
Lot Lizard is a feature documentary about truck stop sex workers in America. The film follows Jennifer, a recovering sex worker who is trying to get her life back on track; Bobby, a man struggling to come to grips with his girlfriend's livelihood; and Betty, an aging sex worker who makes no apologies for her lifestyle. These intimate portraits hint at a broader story about America, how it deals with its down and out, and how we are implicated as consumers.
Create a culture of selflessness | James Chapman | TEDxUTChattanooga
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Chattanooga is a team and if you live here then you play for our team. The only way we will maximize our overall talent is to be completely selfless. We must think of ourselves as one neighborhood, one community. We cannot be so concerned with being the best individuals that we forget to assist the people who live, work, and play with us. Our positions of leadership must set the tone. We all must be intentional about assisting each other in personal and professional development. Furthermore, we are only as strong as our weakest link. So if some players are disadvantaged, we must make a conscious effort to uplift them.
James graduated from Bluefield College in 2008 with a bachelor's of arts in Communications with a concentration in Marketing. Previously a workforce development professional responsible for program development with the Southeast Tennessee Development District, James was named a member of the inaugural class of Protégé Chattanooga—a mentoring program sponsored by the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce to advance the leadership skills of young professionals. He was also named 2013 Young Professional of the Year by the Young Professional Association of Chattanooga. One of the newest members of Sandbox, a society of the world's most extraordinary game changers, he has emerged into a high impact leader.
In addition to fire-starting talks, James is also author of recently published book #TheHustle. It encourages us to start doing and keep going! His main entrepreneurial venture is being founder of Change-N-Go, an oil change delivery company. His company combines a service that car owners must have, with smart phone technology that most people use. He is also Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Causeway, a community innovation hub aimed to get civic entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to action for a better city. James' long-term goal is to one day be majority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
