Miller's Dale Valley Buxton - Derbyshire
Join Views of Cheshire as we take a trip down to Miller's Dale Valley on the River Wye in Derbyshire.
It is a popular beauty spot in the Peak District of England, much of the area being preserved as a site of Scientific interest.
The most local landmark is the viaduct, first built by the Midland Railway in 1866. Increasing traffic meant that a second viaduct parallel to first was built in 1905, increasing the tracks to four. Miller's Dale railway station was at the junction where passengers from Buxton joined or left the trains between London and Manchester.

Many thanks, Views of Cheshire.

IT ONLY STOPS FOR HER!
One of the stations to feel the squeeze of British Railways' economy-drive is Great Longstone in Derbyshire. Dr Beeching's shut down has now taken effect. No more passenger service from Great Longstone. A local resident Mrs A Boardman began a campaign to persuade British Railways to maintain the service if only for her. She won her point and now stopping at Great Longstone there'll be two trains a day, one to take her to work and one to bring her home. There isn't any staff on duty and nobody else is to use the station.

The River Wye in Millers Dale, Derbyshire
Just a short stretch of the river below the car park at the old station. Note the tree that has been stripped of its leaves by grubs or caterpillars I think.

Monsal Dale & Railway Viaduct
Looking out from Monsal head across the valley of the river Wye in Derbyshire. The old viaduct once carried the Midland Railway company's route between London, Manchester and also Buxton for well over one hundred years during the steam era. This viaduct now forms an important vista along the newly opened Monsal Dale Trail between Wye Dale in the west and Bakewell in the south east. The trail is popular with both walkers and cyclists.
Monsal Trail: Railway Walk: Bakewell to Buxton Derbyshire: Nigel Harper Photography
A fusion of Video and Stills! Walking the Monsal Trail (A disused Midland Railway line) is something we'd planned to do for ages. Work and poor weather delayed the trip until a brief respite in the weather allowed a 2 day trip to Derbyshire in early September 2012. Starting from Bakewell, we traversed numerous bridges, (over/under) through tunnels (6) with fantastic scenery, (Monsal Head) and followed the River Wye for a couple of miles (spectacular) not to be missed. From Wyedale we headed towards the A6 and took a bus to Buxton. Later bussing back to Bakewell to collect our car. Fantastic day out, Fab scenery, Fab weather (we were lucky) We'll be back next Spring and maybe do it on our Tandem! A couple of tips - Take refreshments with you and check bus times to and from Buxton. Avoid weekends maybe!
