Millersburg Ferry Photo Challenge
This week we are doing a Millersburg Ferry Photo Challenge. Located on North of Harrisburg, PA, this ferry has been in operation since 1817 and is said to be the oldest public transportation in the United States.
A RIDE ON THE ROARING BULL MILLERSBURG FERRY
The actual birthday of the Millersburg
Ferry is not known. When Daniel Miller
founded Millersburg in 1807, he reserved
the shad fishery and ferry rights to
himself.
An unsigned agreement dated 1817 tells
us that George Carson, from Upper
Paxton Township and Michael Crow from
(then) Cumberland County, were
negotiating for the use of Crow's land as
a ferry landing. In 1820, Michael Crow
was assessed for a farm, sawmill and ferry.
Then in 1826, a sheriff's sale transferred
Daniel Miller's proprietary reserve and
ferry right to David Kramer, who did
establish a ferry at Millersburg.
From David Kramer, the ferry passed to
his sons, George and Joseph. In the
1870's Joseph Johnson purchased it and
resold it to John Freck, who in turn sold it
to Ramsey Moyer in the 1880's. In 1890,
Levi McConnell bought the ferry. Levi
and his brother Richard had been
operating another ferry in competition so
this purchase combined the two
operations.
Richard McConnell's interest was sold to
H. M. Hain in 1896 and then to Annie
Miller and Pierce McConnell in 1898.
Annie sold her share to Pierce in 1900
who sold it to John Travitz in 1904. In
1902 Levi McConnell sold his interest to
George Seiler until 1906 when Warren
Hunter purchased it. John Travitz sold his
interest to Thomas Radel I in 1907.
The ferry stayed in the families of Hunter
and Radel until 1968 when it was sold to
Bud and Robert Wallis and Jim Zeiders.
In 1972 Robert Wallis became the sole
owner of the Millersburg Ferry.
In 1990, Community Banks, N.A. of
Millersburg purchased the ferry from
Robert Wallis and gave it to the
Millersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber then formed the
Millersburg Ferry Boat Association, a
board of nine members from various
community organizations, who oversee
the seasonal operation of the boats while
preserving this historical value for future
generations.
Millersburg Ferry Boat Ride on the Susquehanna River
The Millersburg Ferry is the last known wooden double stern-wheel paddle boats still in operation in the United States and the only ferry service on the Susquehanna River.
There are two boats the Roaring Bull V and the Falcon III. They cross between Millersburg, Pa on the east bank of the Susquehanna River to the west bank about two miles south of Liverpool, PA.
Millersburg Ferry
My family and I went to Millersburg on Labor Day weekend to ride the boat and have a little picnic. The video is a little choppy cause my camera was on a strange setting at times, but I still thought I'd put some of the footage together.
Ride to Halifax and Millersburg PA
Until I can get the next official day odyssey up...how about another ride to south central Pennsylvania!
Part of our route uses the original route from Baltimore north to York PA. After a brief stop at Hanover Junction and an on-the-fly look at the Former Seitzville Mill, back to our route.
In the interest of time, we bypass York on Interstate 83, which we also bypass Harrisburg on. Our next stop of consequence we revisit the Appalachian Trail where it crosses Peters Mountain. Then, on to Halifax, where we (for the first time) stop and check out the Susquehanna riverfront.
After checking out some more of Halifax, we depart north on PA 147 (MD also has a 147 by the way). Wasn't sure how far north I'd go, till I remembered there's a ferry up here someplace! Think I'll look for it!
And so, with that-we ride the Millersburg PA ferry! A wooden stern-wheeler, and one of the last left. If you recall our Potomac crossing on Whites Ferry, this one's completely different! Only designed for 3-4 vehicles; most passengers just board on foot.
A little hair raising; our first crossing of the Susquehanna, on a boat where the water almost washes over the deck!
We finally make it to US 15, where we go north then south. We just crossed the Susquehanna, but we're crossing again on our way back!
Our finale takes us by one more riverfront-Harrisburg.
Still in the incredibly slow process of completing my move, but I'll try to throw something out there till I have to sign off. As I said-got an Odyssey on the way!
Done on June 18 2017.

Lykens Valley Golf Course. Millersburg, PA
Nestled between Central Pennsylvania’s Berry and Mahantongo Mountains you will find the beautiful Lykens Valley Golf Course and Resort. The picturesque country setting is just minutes from the historic town of Millersburg, Pennsylvania.
The handsomely manicured 18 hole Championship Golf Course is situated on over 170 acres. The mature tree lined fairways and rolling hills of this course make it moderately challenging. There are several water shots including a rambling creek and lilly pad filled pond that you will cross numerous times.
