History[edit]
Built in 1626 by Sir Thomas Morgan,[1][2][3][4][5] Steward to the Earl of Pembroke, it was one of the first of the 'mock' castles to be built in Wales. King Charles I spent two nights at Ruperra Castle in 1645[5] shortly after the Battle of Naseby. Resultantly the royal coat of arms was added to the decoration on the South Porch, and the present public footpath from Rudry to the Castle is still known as King's Drive.[2][3][4]
It was bought as his home by wealthy John Morgan the merchant for 12,400 pounds. He was unmarried and it was consolidated on his death in 1715 into the Tredegar estates of the Morgan family.
It was destroyed by fire in 1785,[5] and rebuilt, resultantly became home, especially in the 19th century, to the heir of the estate.[2][3][4] Godfrey Charles Morgan, 2nd Baron, 1st Viscount Tredegar, who was a captain in the 17th Lancers during the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, was born at Ruperra.[3][4] It was during the early Victorian age that he undertook a lot of development, adding three new lodges as well as in 1826 a now listed iron bridge, allowing a carriage way through Coed Craig Ruperra and across the Rhymney River to Lower Machen Church where the family and their servants attended Sunday services.[3][4]
After the death of army officer turned politician Colonel Frederick Courtenay Morgan in 1909, his son Courtenay Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar, embarked on a programme of refurbishment. Minor adjustments were made to the main house, but his major improvement was the building of a new stable block to replace the one destroyed by fire in 1895, a new reservoir and pump house in the deer park, and a new power house fitted with duplicate steam-driven generators, dynamos and boilers. The 1840s brew house, laundry and dairy range were converted to accommodate the estates staff.[3][4]
Courtenay's son, Evan Morgan, 4th Baron, 2nd Viscount Tredegar, poet and noted eccentric with links to Aldous Huxley, Lord Alfred Douglas, Augustus John, Nancy Cunard and H. G. Wells, then owned Ruperra.[3][4] He grew up there and, apparently, refused to sell it to William Randolph Hearst, whose lover, the actress Marion Davies, wanted a home in South Wales. Later, after Davis saw photographs of St Donat's Castle, Vale of Glamorgan in Country Life magazine, that property was bought and revitalised by Hearst in 1925 as a gift to Davis.[6][7][8]
But by 1935, the Morgan fortune was in decline. Despite having invested heavily in the property, the Morgan seat and main home remained Tredegar House, with Ruperra used as a weekend hunting lodge.[4] The entire 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) estate was put up for sale, with the contents either moved to Tredegar House or sold in three-day auction. Un-staffed and effectively abandoned, at the start of World War II, like many other large estate houses, it was taken over by the British Army, under whose control in 1941 it was destroyed by another fire.[5] Post-war, the entire estate was sold onwards as farm land, with the castle left as a decaying ruin, the status in which it remains today.[3][4]
Mr Ashraf Barakat bought the castle in 1998, and tried to revive the sport of polo in Wales.[9] After failing in a planning permission application to construct nine residential flats within the building, due to the discovery of nesting of both Greater and Lesser horseshoe bats, he later applied to demolish it to build housing, but again planning permission was refused. In September 2010, Barakat put the castle up for sale, at a price of £1.5M.

The County of Kent in England served as the landscape that iconic and popular author Charles Dickens grew up in as a youth.
Cambridge
The city of Cambridge is a university town and the administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire, England. It lies in East Anglia, on the River Cam, about 50 miles (80 km) north of London. According to the United Kingdom Census 2011, its population was 123,867 (including 24,488 students). This makes Cambridge the second largest city in Cambridgeshire after Peterborough, and the 54th largest in the United Kingdom. There is archaeological evidence of settlement in the area during the Bronze Age and Roman times; under Viking rule Cambridge became an important trading centre. The first town charters were granted in the 12th century, although city status was not conferred until 1951.
Cambridge is most widely known as the home of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1209 and consistently ranked one of the top five universities in the world. The university includes the renowned Cavendish Laboratory, King's College Chapel, and the Cambridge University Library. The Cambridge skyline is dominated by the last two buildings, along with the spire of the Catholic Church (Our Lady and English Martyrs) at Hills Road, the chimney of Addenbrooke's Hospital in the far south of the city and St John's College Chapel tower.

The Historic Manor at Glen Gordon in Huntly, Virginia
Presented by Hunt Country Sotheby's International Realty
For more information go to
The Manor at Glen Gordon, located in the venerable County of Rappahannock, Virginia, offers a retreat into the past, present and future. Originally, the land grant encompassed over 10,000 acres along the Shenandoah National Park and displays magnificent sunset views over the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Possibly dating back to the late 1700's, the manor house site was originally the Wells Fargo stage coach stop. The house was then constructed in 1800 and later purchased by Basil Gordon of Scotland and his wife who was a cousin of Wallis Simpson. Mrs. Gordon's sister owned the equally impressive farm across the street which became a competition between the two of outstanding gardening and gracious entertaining. In the early 1920's the Gordon's extensively expanded and improved upon the property. Known as the Windsor Lodge it served as a hunting lodge to the wealthy and aristocratic. Glen Gordon was host to many fox hunt meets along with other country pursuits of hunting and fishing. Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson often visited the lodge and entertained dignitaries from around the world.

Seaford Court Preparatory School 100 Images
Seaford Court Preparatory School was founded in 1901 in Seaford, Sussex by Mr A.C. Clarke.
During the war, in 1940, the school was evacuated to Malvern Link. The School bought Fern Lodge, a large house with a conservatory to the rear, once owned by Henry F S Morgan founder of the Morgan Motor Company.
The School continued successfully for 40 years mainly under the leadership of Headmaster Geoffrey Milton who lived with his family in the main house. In 1980 the school merged with 'The Elms' in Colwall.
The old site was then bought by the NHS in the early 1980's, but the buildings were sadly subjected to neglect, vandalism and fire, and eventually condemned as dangerous and required to be demolished. Demolition was carried on 10th December 2008 by Interserve Project Services PLC. This marked the commencement of the construction of Malvern NHS Community Hospital.
Geoffrey Milton died at home on 24th July 2010, aged 84 years.

Grow on, Film It | Middleton Primary School | Short Film
2nd place: Derbyshire’s Middleton Primary School, who showed us around their allotment, brought us into the kitchen to watch them cooking food from the garden and even spoke to the viewers using British Sign Language, all the while set against a carefully edited soundtrack. A thoughtful and well-made film. Congrats!
Along with energy company Bulb, we held a Grow On, Film It competition for schools to show us the effects food growing has on the pupils and staff.
