10. Pripyat Amusement Park:
Slated to open on May 1st, 1986, for the May Day celebration in Chernobyl, Ukraine, the park was meant to be a place of wonderment for the city’s children. That wonderful opening day would never arrive, because on April 26, 1986, a mandatory evacuation took place when the nearby nuclear power plant melted down. The park today tells the story of what happened on that day.
9. Helltown, Ohio:
Helltown, Ohio, a byname given to a small village and parts of neighboring townships in Summit County, were founded in 1806 and collectively called “Boston Mills” for the mill that once stood there. Life here was quiet, unassuming, and positively normal. Quiet, unassuming, and normal, that is, until 1974 when President Ford signed an eminent domain law that forced the forfeiture of certain lands that would become part of the proposed Cuyahoga Valley National Park
8. Matsuo Ghost Mine
Matsuo Ghost Mine, often referred to as the Real Silent Hill is a make shift city in the mountains in Matsuo, Japan. The island was set up to be what would be the most successful sulfur mines of its time when it opened in 1914. When the mine closed in 1971, the city with 11 concrete apartment complexes was abandone. The creepiest thing about this place is that it's hidden in a thick mist that covers the now-unpopulated city. People have a hard time finding the place, and when they do, they have a feeling of being watched through the fog.
7. The Catacombs of Paris
The Catacombs Of Paris is an expansive underground ossuary containing network of more than 200 miles of tunnels serving as the final resting place to over sic million Parisians.
6. The Overtoun Bridge
Located near the village of Milton, Scotland, The Overtoun Bridge is said to be the borderline between the living and the damned. Also known as “Suicide Leap”, this bridge has claimed several lives every year and the majority of these are non-human.
5. Shades of Death Road:
“Shades of Death Road” is a seven-mile, two-lane road, half-residential; half-forest road that at night is covered in darkness, without a streetlight to be found. Simply called Shades by locals who are familiar with its dark history, this road is known for its twisting dangerous turns, it's thick dense fog, and its heavy canopy of trees, which is rumored to have provided cover for cutthroat bandits looking to accost unsuspecting travelers.
4. The Island of the Dolls
The Island of the Dolls, or, in Spanish, Isla de las Munecas, is a small island south of Mexico City that is well-known for its terrifying nature. The legend begins in the early 1950's when Julian Santana Barrera came to the island to live as a recluse. One morning, Julian discovered the body of a young girl floating in the canal by the island. The following day he found a doll in the same location in which he found the child. Julian pinned the doll to a tree nearby as a memorial. Strangely, more dolls began floating in the canal following this, and this convinced Julian that one doll was not enough.
3. Aokigahara Forest
The Aokigahara Forest gained notoriety as a suicide destination in 1993 after the publication of Wataru Tsurumi “Complete Manual of Suicide”. Cited for its size, its silence, and a density that makes discovery difficult, Tsurumi was coined Aokigahara Forest as the “the perfect place to die.”
2. Gettysburg
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was the site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War by number of battlefield deaths. More than 10,000 men lost their lives here in a staggering three days. Gettysburg’s battle-ground is deemed one of the most haunted places in the United States
1. Poveglia Island
The island as it stands currently is a shattered shell of what it once was. The buildings that once housed the sick, the insane, and the dying are left open to the air. Elements of the past are scattered all around in the form of discarded mattresses, rows of old bed frames, and a once-operational industrial kitchen
