OLDEST SAMURAI FESTIVAL IN JAPAN || Sōma Nomaoi Day 2
Hey guys!
This is part two of our adventure in Sōma City, attending the Nomaoi Festival!
Soma Nomaoi is a summer festival, held every year in July in the city of Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. Because of its long history of more than a 1000 years, it has been declared an important intangible cultural asset. Over a period of 3 days, spectators can observe the procession of about 500 mounted warriors, horse racing in armours, the sacred flag competition and the Nomagake, where people catch a horse with their bare hands and proclaim it as sacred.

Kenji Saito, Director, Ofunato Tsunami Museum, Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture
Kenji Saito was born in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture. He now serves as director of the Ofunato Tsunami Museum, but before the 3-11 disaster, he was executive director of Saito Seika Co., Ltd. When the earthquake struck, he was in the Saito Seika headquarters, a three-story, steel-framed building. He called his employees and together they barely escaped death by running to the top of a hill. As he fled, Saito took a video of the tsunami which he immediately shared with the media. His images of the devastation were broadcast worldwide. The tsunami obliterated the entire town and claimed many victims, including Saito's aunt. If people had evacuated sooner, there wouldn't have been so many victims… We never want to have tsunami victims again. With these thoughts, in March 2013, Saito opened the Ofunato Tsunami Museum in the former Saito Seika auditorium one of the very few structures left standing after the tsunami. The museum's mission is to pass on the lessons learned from the tsunami. Today Saito is a living storyteller, who speaks every day about the importance of evacuation procedures and the need for disaster prevention.

Now it’s Completed: the all-Japan tour
Finally, yes Finally the very very long tour of 2 months has been completed
at “Hakusasonso Hashimoto Kansetsu Garden & Museum Kyoto” on 31st August, 2019.
Thank you very much for all the people who came and watched my performances at each prefecture, and
who came to the final in Kyoto !
You can watch the final performance in Kyoto on the last part of DVD (part 2).
Followings are the outline of all-Japan tour !
Hokkaido → First time to land on Hokkaido. I was surprised to see the wide roads and immense cultivation.
I took a ferry from Oma in Aomori prefecture to Hakodate in Hokkaido.
Then, I drove the car from Hakodate to Sapporo. (I drove the car for entire all-Japan tour except Okinawa.)
At Sapporo I made Live performances on the streets in the midst of “Yosakoi” festival.
Tohoku District → I bought an amulet for traffic safety at Mt. Osorezan in Aomori.
Thanks to the amulet, I believe I could have a narrow escape from death in Hokkaido where I visited later.
And then I made performances at the water front in Aomori prefecture and Minamisoma in Fukushima prefecture.
I tried to straightforwardly play for requiescat (not emotionally), but eye water came out like waterfall.
I still do not know why, but it was mystified experiences.
The reconstruction is not completed yet. Still the people in Tohoku district is gentle and warm-hearted.
Kanto District → At Kanto, unexpectedly I could have a great opportunity to collaborate with
the fantastic ballerina “Nanako”.
The emotion that I had with the unison of ChapmanStick (strings) and dance is beyond expression.
Chubu District → This all-Japan tour had started in Gifu prefecture where I was born.
Also it was a halfway point where I wondered whether or not I should continue this tour without a break.
At a train station In Shizuoka prefecture, I met a staff member of a nursing home.
By his invitation, I played music at the nursing home for their comfort.
Kansai District → It is such a great honor to complete the all-Japan tour here in “Hakusasonso Hashimoto Kansetsu Garden & Museum Kyoto”.
In Nara prefecture, I went to Mt. Wakakusa. Usually the dears were scattered, but at that time they got together around me. (I don’t know why.)
It was a kind of strange feeling to play in front of the animals. You can watch the scene on the DVD to be released soon.
Chugoku District → “Tottori Sand Dunes” was very impressive. The performance at the top is to be seen on the DVD.
It was refreshing. At almost end of the tour, I played in the middle of the mother nature, and I could re-examined the instrument, my music and myself.
Shikoku District → After hitting the halfway point, I felt it was extremely difficult to sleep in the car with the fierce humidity in Kochi prefecture.
I was in vulnerable mental condition at Shikoku District to wonder if I could continue the tour until the end.
But anyway UDON (wheat noodle) in Kagawa prefecture is very delicious !
Kyushu district → For me it was first time to land on Kyushu. I was surprised to know all the shopping streets were so busy.
All the people were full of smiles.
I took a ferry from Kagoshima shinkou to Okinawa. It was also first time to see Sakurajima to feel the grandeur of nature.
For your reference, there were so many beautiful women in Fukuoka prefecture.
Okinawa → After the voyage of 24 hours, I could land on Okinawa ! At that time, a typhoon was coming.
In the storm, I could manage to play music on Kokusai Street.
I had to give up the performance at Shuri-jo Caste because of the storm.
Although the weather was terrible, I could make the performance at the water front to be seen on DVD.
It was precious experience to be in the real storm in Okinawa.
This time I could not have a hairbreadth escape (the ferry did not leave the land), and I was almost left alone in Okinawa.

Ishinomaki reborn after tsunami [Japan 2017]

Radiation levels remain high in unlivable areas
A government survey shows radiation levels in some areas near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have been more than halved due to experimental decontamination, but they remain high.
The survey was conducted in areas where annual exposure to radiation would exceed 50 millisieverts. These areas are regarded as unsuitable for living.
On Tuesday, the Environment Ministry disclosed the results of experimental decontamination at 6 locations that was carried out from October through January.
Radiation levels in residential districts of Namie Town averaged 3.26 to 8.47 microsieverts per hour, about 40 to 50 percent of the pre-decontamination levels.
In Futaba Town, measurements near public buildings averaged 3.01 to 4.46 microsieverts per hour, about 20 to 30 percent of the pre-decontamination levels.
Despite the reductions, all the figures were more than 10 times higher than the government-set level of 0.23 microsieverts per hour that requires decontamination.

Resumption of rice farming slow in Fukushima
NHK has learned that farmers in 6 municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture have resumed rice planting in only about 2 percent of available rice fields, even after restrictions were lifted in the spring.
Following the March 2011 crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the central government restricted rice farming in 12 municipalities in the prefecture due to fears of radioactive contamination. Farmers had also voluntarily suspended rice growing.
Those restrictions and self-imposed suspensions were lifted this spring on about 5,200 hectares of land in 6 municipalities. The move followed a decline in radiation levels and the lifting of a ban on entering the areas.
In Minamisoma City, rice planting has resumed on 111 hectares, or 3.4 percent of the total area available.
This is followed by 0.2 percent in Tomioka Town, 0.1 percent in Namie and Okuma towns, and 0.06 percent in Katsurao Village. Rice planting has not been resumed at all in Futaba Town.

Fukushima Voice 2
Kimiko Owada of Tomioka, Fukushima Prefecture tells her current feelings, Even though I want to return home, I can't—it's not that I won't go back, it's that I cannot go back.
On the day of the nuclear accident, Owada's family then in Tomioka, first evacuated to Kawauchi Village. What is usually a 30 minute drive became a 6 hour drive due to the traffic of those being evacuated.
As telephones were down because of earthquake damage, Ms. Owada searched for information about her mother's whereabouts via various media such as the Internet.
18 days after the earthquake, Ms. Owada got ahold of information that her mother may be among the over 3,000 people evacuated to Koriyama City. She continued searching evacuation centers for 2 days before finally being reunited with her mother. However, her mother was weak and had onset dementia. After that, she was placed in a nursing facility, but due to an ever-changing environment, she couldn't get used to it and she died this year. 7 elderly members of Ms. Owada's family have died this year.
Ms. Owada has once been allowed to go back to her home in the restricted zone of Tomioka and is mourning for the sight that her hometown has become.
She said, If you only see and hear (about it) indirectly, you can't understand the pain. You can't really understand unless you have been there.
Last month, I went to see the current condition of the disaster in 3 prefectures as a member of Tasukeai Japan Fukushima. Then, the other day, I went to Odaka Ward in Minami Soma. I think it is exactly as Ms. Owada said, You can't understand unless you have been there. Even after having seen pictures or videos, if you actually go there, you will be strongly moved.
The next time Ms. Owada visits her home, I want to accompany her and feel the actual condition of Tomioka for myself with my own mind and body.

Samurai Battle Fest - Siege of Hachigata Castle, Yorii 寄居北條まつり
The Siege of Hachigata Castle in 1590 is merely a footnote in the grand campaign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi to teach the haughty Hojo Clan of Odawara to respect his authority as the strongest leader in medieval Japan. However, in the town of Yorii they make it a big deal with a battle festival where they fire makeshift canons and have people dressed in armor battling each other with soft-tipped spears.
It's a fun festival held every Spring. In the past it seems it was in April now it seems the second Sunday of May but don't quote me on that. Definitely worth checking out though!

Day 1 of Rallyround's Samurai Challenge - Fukuoka to Mount Aso
I am just amazed that I stumbled upon Samurai Challenge rally on the way home from work today. The two cars I saw were a 1965 Ford (UK crew), and a 1972 Jensen Interceptor (Australian crew). Watch, as I desperately try to give my stickers away.
The first leg of the event ran from Fukuoka to Mount Aso. The rally will conclude in 3 weeks or so in Japan's northern-most island, Hokkaido. For more details of the event, including a downloadable PDF, follow these links:
