APRIL Good for Community: Mahouts, The Human-Elephant Peacemaker
Meet Sarmin. He is a mahout at APRIL Group’s Elephant Flying Squad (EFS) camp in Ukui Estate, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province.
Sarmin started his career in Way Kambas National Park in Lampung as an elephant feeder, before training to become a professional mahout.
He is in charge of the well-being and the training of of these wild Sumatran Elephants, listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Initially, the EFS program was established to mitigate conflicts between humans and the wild elephants. When local villagers are disturbed by these wild elephants, the mahouts and trained elephants will immediately spring into action - they go to the location and herd the wild animals away from residential areas.
In 2006, APRIL Group built the EFS camp with the support of the Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Riau, WWF, Tesso Nilo National Park (TNTN) and other companies.
Today, there are a total of 6 elephants cared for by 9 mahouts in the EFS camp. The mahouts originally came from the Elephant Training Center of Minas in Riau and Way Kambas in Lampung.
APRIL Group, as one of the world’s largest pulp and paper companies operating in Indonesia as PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (PT RAPP), supports animal welfare as well as harmonious living between humans and animals.
The EFS program is proof of the company’s commitment to protect Sumatran Elephants from extinction.

Perkenalkan Sarmin. Dia adalah seorang mahot di kamp Elephant Flying Squad (EFS) milik Grup APRIL, yang berlokasi di Estate Ukui, Kabupaten Pelalawan, Provinsi Riau.
Sarmin memulai karirnya di Taman Nasional Way Kambas, Lampung, sebagai pemberi makan gajah, sebelum akhirnya mengikuti pelatihan untuk menjadi mahot profesional.
Sarmin bertugas melatih Gajah Sumatera liar dan menjaga kesehatan mereka. Menurut International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Gajah Sumatera tercatat sebagai salah satu species binatang yang hampir punah.
