Darwin Australia Info:
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia, situated on the Timor Sea. It is the largest city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, with a population of 148,564. It is the smallest, wettest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre.
Darwin's proximity to South East Asia makes it a link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin, extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking the harbour. Its suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. Past Berrimah, the Stuart Highway goes on to Darwin's satellite city Palmerston and its suburbs.
The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, experiences a tropical climate with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as the build up leading up to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December and brings with it heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour.
The greater Darwin area is the ancestral home of the Larrakia people. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin harbour during its survey of the area. John Clements Wickham named the region Port Darwin in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage which ended in October 1836. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but it was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following the devastation caused by the 1897 cyclone, the 1937 cyclone, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974

Mindil Beach Sunset Market, Darwin, Australia
Walk around of Mindil Beach Sunset Market in Darwin, Australia. This market is held every Thursday & Sunday during the dry season in the Northern Territory Capital of Darwin. Head to Mindil Beach, watch the sunset over a chilled beer and then browse the stalls and get some food at the market. The Northern Territory is Australia's most crocodile infested land and has a rich aboriginal heritage - both of which are visible in the market with crocodile skulls, leather wallets, belts and boomerangs, aboriginal art and didgeridoo's on display. There are also lots of clothes, handmade jewellery, art and souvenirs. The food is as diverse as the people who now inhabit Australia featuring Greek, Chinese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai as well as Australian. The bust gets crowded but retains a relaxed and jovial atmosphere. Live musicians play too. It's a good market and a must do if you're in Darwin during the dry season on a Thursday or Sunday.

MINDIL BEACH COASTAL / FANNIE BAY CLIFF TRAIL, DARWIN HIGH SCHOOL NT AUSTralia
AA 2006 TRIP North of the central city, there are great views from the Cullen Bay Marina at sunset and sunrise, and plenty of good places to eat. Heading north on Gilruth Avenue, the Gardens Park Golf Course and Botanic Gardens are on your right, and on the left takes is Mindil Beach. It’s a lovely white sand beach where you don’t swim between September and April because of the box jellyfish (stingers). The locals have a saying, ‘Don’t swim in months with an “R” in it’. A lot of them also have a saying, ‘Only drink on days with a Y” in it’. The Mindil Beach Sunset Market is a must for an eclectic mix of cuisine, craft, entertainment, beach fireworks and mixing with the locals. (Thursdays, May to October, Sundays, June to September). For more entertainment, the MGM Grand’s casino is just off the beach.
