Fifty-first Episode: Long Dead Spiraly Things
We took out kids to the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural and Human History (I can't remember the Japanese name right now) for a special exhibit of Ammonites! I loved it! But then I'm a nerd! :) I couldn't resist showing you some of the things we saw in the museum.
I meant to edit and upload this in April before the Ammonite exhibit finsihed, but I VEDA took too much time. Unfortunately the Ammonite exhibit finished 2 days ago.

Ancient Race Of Tiny People Discovered In Wyoming?

In 1932, gold prospectors searching within the San Pedro Mountains of Wyoming, would make a ground-breaking discovery.
A find, which for a brief period of time, exposed to the world the past existence of a group of people, a secret un-explainable race, which has been successfully covered up for over a century.
Cast into the realm of folk lore, this group of people could be attributed to tales of gnomes or hobbits.
Known as the little people of priory mountain, the once native “crow people”, spoke of their ferocious nature for many hundreds of years.
No taller than 36 inches in height, according to William R Corliss in his 1978 book, 'Ancient Man: A Handbook of Puzzling Artefacts', citing the Anthropological Institute, Journal, 6; 100, 1876: An ancient little people graveyard of vast proportions was once found in Coffee county.
It was estimated that there were as many as 100,000 separate individuals buried there.
And in 1932, 2 gold prospectors would thankfully expose the existence of the little people of priory mountain to the world.
Exposing a worldwide cover up, of gigantic proportions.
Deep within a mine on the mountain, they discovered a secret layer, a tomb, somehow placed deep within the rock face.
Within this tomb they found the mummified remains of a tiny humanoid.
Now known as Pedro, according to Dr. Henry Shapiro, an Anthropologist from the American Museum of Natural History, along with the several x rays he made, proving his authenticity, Pedro was 65 years old when he died, and he had unfortunately suffered a terrible fall, which had dislocated several of the vertebrae in his back.
It seemed to Dr Shapiro, a head wound that he had apparently suffered some short time after, may have been the result of his relinquished life, in a curious act of mercy by his fellow tribe members.
The crow tribe attests to these tiny people once being gifted warriors, feared by all those in the surrounding areas. Their mounds atop priory mountains was a no-go area.
They told of the little people murdering all who ventured near them, even decimating a group of 200 strong warriors who mistakenly trespassed into their territories during the night.
Pedro, ended up in a pharmacy in Wyoming, and about seven years he was a successful local attraction.
One day when an unusual businessman offered to buy him.
After apparently paying a very large sum, the man disappeared with Pedro and he has never been seen of again.
The only existing Mummy of the little people it seems, was successfully confiscated during the late 1950’s.
To this day, it is not known where Pedro is, although for the person who locates his current residence, we have been made aware of a substantial cash prize for the person who can bring him back into the public arena, or at least enable further testing.
If you know where Pedro is, please do get in touch, there is someone with a rather large present waiting for you.

10. Dakota - The Duck-Billed Dinosaur.
Dakota is the nickname given to a fossil of a Duck-Billed Dinosaur, scientifically called a Edmontosaurus Annectens, which lived at the very end of the Cretaceous Period. Dakota was first noticed by a then teenager named Tyler Lyson in 1999 on a ranch near the southwestern North Dakota town named Marmarth, which is also part of the Hell Crest Formation. Excavation for the fossil did not start until 2004 when Lyson was in college and teamed up with British Paleontologist Phillip Manning. Dakota has skin, bones, and tendons preserved in sediment. Scientists believe that Dakota was a plant eater, roamed the area of the United States about 65 million years ago, weighed around between three to four tons, measured at about 35 feet long, and could run about 28 miles per hour. Dakota is now housed at the North Dakota Heritage Center and States Museum in Bismarck, North Dakota.
9. Tyrannosaurus Rex
While several bones for the Tyrannosaurus Rex has been found in several areas around the United States of America, one of the most well-preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils was discovered in Montana’s Hell Creek Formation. The skull weighed in about 2,500 pounds, lived about 66 million years ago, making its living toward the end of the Cretaceous Period, and died around the age of 15. The skull also had about 20 percent of its former body intact, and is about 85 percent as large as the biggest Tyrannosaurus Rex found previously. Tyrannosaurus Rex’s are known to be meat eaters, had razor sharp teeth, about 40 feet long, and stood up to 20 feet tall. The T-Rex skull was named Tufts-Love Rex after to two paleontologists to uncover the skull, Luke Tufts and Jason Love. Luke and Jason were volunteers at Seattle's Burke Museum and part of a University of Washington expedition. Tufts-Love Rex is going to be on view at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle, Washington, once it is all cleaned, preserved and ready for view, as Tufts-Love Rex was only found a little over a year ago.
8. Triceratops
Recently, in fact as recent as August of this year, a Triceratops was found on a construction site in the town of Thornton, Colorado. The Saunders Construction crew was digging for a new fire and police station when one of a geotechnical engineer on site noticed something inconsistent with the surrounding claystone and sand. After ordering the crew to stop, water was poured around the item, when is when they noticed it was a very unusual find. In response, they secured the area and notified the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Dinosaur curator Joe Sertich, who works for the Denver Museum, states the dinosaur is a Triceratops fossil, about 66 million years old and lived at the end of the Cretaceous period, and is believed to have been about the size of a rhino. So far, records so that a total of 12 Triceratops bones have been uncovered at this site. These bones include both brow horns, part of the skull that surrounds the brain, parts of the snout, parts of the frill, which is the shield behind its head, the lower jaw, parts of the neck, some vertebrae and ribs. The possible weight of this dinosaur has not been mentioned, but just one rib weighed in at 40 pounds!
7.) Dakotaraptor
Unlike other dinosaurs like to Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Dakotaraptor was first found in 2005 and finally given its name in 2015. The Dakotaraptor was found in South Dakota’s Hell Creek Formation and dated to the end of the Cretaceous period. The dinosaur was discovered by Robert DePalma and his team. Robert is the curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Palm Beach Museum of Natural History. This dinosaur is said to be about 18 feet long, wings stretched about 3 feet, and is explained to be like a giant crested bird-like dinosaur. The Dakotaraptor had long arms with one of the lower arm bones showing quill knobs, which paleontologists believe means this dinosaur had some feathers, however it is believed that these dinosaurs could not fly. Furthermore, the dinosaur had long rear legs with a very large sickle claw on the second toe, which is believed was used for protection against other dinosaurs and was measured at 9.5 inches. Dakotaraptors are believed to be able to run quickly and were carnivores.
New dinosaur species discovered in Brazil balanced on single toes
An exceptional Brazilian fossil reveals a dinosaur that walked on one toe like a horse—and tore into meat with knife-like claws.
When Neurides Martins brushed the sediment from the tiny tooth, she knew she had found something special.
That tooth was the first piece of a new species of dinosaur, and an unusual one. Roughly the size of a Great Dane, the carnivore would have roamed the desert some 90 million years ago, walking upright on two legs and resting its weight on just one long clawed toe, the middle toe of three.
Almost 50 years ago, paleontologists found mysterious one-toed footprints in the region, but until now, no one knew what creature had made them. While its three functioning toes make the new species a theropod dinosaur like Tyrannosaurus rex, this rare anatomy makes it function essentially as if it were monodactyl, or one-toed, an adaptation that had not yet been recorded among Brazil’s dinosaurs.
Named Vespersaurus paranaensis for the city and state where it was found, the dinosaur is also the first found in Brazil’s Paraná region, and the most complete and best-preserved theropod dinosaur found in Brazil so far. Martins and colleagues described the dinosaur and its environment June 26 in the journal Scientific Reports.
Finding a foot.
At less than a quarter-inch long, that first tooth was easy to miss, but Martins, the historian and director of Brazil’s Paleontology Museum of Cruzeiro do Oeste, believed there was more in the 440-pound block of rock and dirt where she found the tooth. One month later, Martins uncovered the dinosaur’s unusual foot, which would confirm its unique way of moving and hunting.
“I was really happy, really excited,” says Martins.
Vespersaurus paranaensis is a member of the Noasaurinae group of theropod dinosaurs. It measured around 5.2 feet in length and stood at about 2.6 feet tall. Considered a small, desert-dwelling dinosaur, it had pneumatic bones—hollow and filled with air, similar to those of modern-day birds. It weighed about 33 pounds and had arms half the size of its legs.
At approximately six inches long, its foot was crucial to understanding the new species. The two toes flanking the middle support toe had large, knife-like claws, which were likely used for capturing, and cutting prey, possibly lizards and pterosaurs.
For Luiz Eduardo Anelli, a paleontologist not involved in the discovery or description of the Vespersaurus paranaensis, it’s the dinosaur’s feet that make it such a fascinating find. In true monodactyls, he says, like horses and ancient kangaroos, the extra toes were lost during the course of evolution .
“The kangaroo became a monodactyl to be able to jump, while the horse was able to increase its agility and speed, making it easier to escape predators and go on long journeys,” he says, citing those same reasons as possible explanations for the new dinosaurs walking on one toe as well.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) launched Friday an excavation of a large-scale dinosaur-fossil group, the only one of which in the world that has been found in a modern urban area.
Located in Yanji city, northeast China's Jilin Province, the fossil group is expected to cover an area of 10 square kilometers. It is also the city's first discovery of dinosaur fossils.
Experts from the CAS say that the geologic body at the excavation site with its differently colored layers suggests that th…

Going back in time: When dinosaurs roamed India
The Indian landmass was home to at least 20 species of dinosaurs between 228 million years ago and 65 million years ago.Today they exist only as fossils. Dino remains have been excavated from the fossil-rich Narmada Valley Basin in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Remains have also been unearthed as far apart as Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya and Barkhan in Pakistan. In central India, nests of up to 24 dinosaur eggs have been discovered, fossilised, in shallow pits into which they were once laid. Geologists consider India the largest known dinosaur hatchery in the world. We are also abundant in fossilised dinosaur dung, which offers rare insights on what dinosaurs ate. We have our own apex predators and giant herbivores. They’ve even earned Indian names like the Rajasaurus, Kotasaurus and Barapasaurus.
