Michigan Upper Peninsula - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Miners Castle
On the shore of Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It extends for 42 miles (67 km) along the shore and covers 73,236 acres (114 sq mi; 296 km2). The park offers spectacular scenery of the hilly shoreline between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan, with various rock formations like natural archways, waterfalls, and sand dunes. The Pictured Rocks stretch for about 15 miles along Lake Superior from Sand Point on the west to just after Spray Falls on the east.
Colorful and bold, the Pictured Rocks tower 50 to 200 feet directly from Lake Superior. The name Pictured Rocks comes from the streaks of mineral stain that decorate the face of the weather-sculpted cliffs. Sandstone cliffs of ochre, tan, and brown - sandwiched with layers of white, green, orange, and black - glisten against the cloud-streaked sky and clear waters of Lake Superior. The cliffs are composed of the Munising Formation of 500 million year old Cambrian period sandstone. The Munising Formation sits atop a Precambrian sandstone of the Jacobsville Formation. The mottled red Jacobsville Formation is the oldest rock in the park. On top of the Munising Formation is the younger Au Train Formation from the Ordovician period. The Au Train Formation is a hard sandstone and acts as a cap over the other layers. Streaks on the face of the cliffs come from the groundwater leaching out of the rock. With it come iron (red), manganese (black-white), limonite (yellow-brown), copper (pink-green) and other minerals. As the water evaporates, these minerals leave streaks of color.
Miners Castle provides a wonderful vista of the Pictured Rocks cliffs. At Sand Point, the cliffs are off in the distance.
Pictured Rock is the home of many of Michigan's waterfalls. Most of the waterfalls resulted from water running over cliffs of the Munising Formation. This lime and sandstone formation exists between Tahquamenon Falls, some 75 miles (121 km) east, to Laughing Whitefish Falls, 30 miles (48 km) miles west of the Lakeshore.

Miners Falls is in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, USA. The Miners River drops about 50 ft over a sandstone outcropping, forming this abundant waterfall. Trail to Miners falls is a gravel pathway through a wooded area with views of the Miners basin along the way. There are 77 steps down to the lower viewing platform, which gives you the best view of the falls. Pets ARE NOT allowed on the trail, but can be in the parking and picnic area. I made this trip in October 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Pictured Rocks, Miner's Castle hole
We took our little 16' boat along Pictured Rocks and pulled up on the backside of Miner's Castle. Our daughter climbed out and walked through the hole that comes out the other side, which is the hole you see in photos of Miner's Castle from the observation deck above.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Munising, Michigan
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore preserves a section of Lake Superior's lakeshore between Grand Marais and Munising, Michigan. Along this section of the lakeshore, colorful sandstone cliffs rise as much as 200 feet above the water. Rock arches and sea caves can be found along the water's edge.
The cliffs are part of the Pictured Rocks escarpment, the result of geological tilting that raised an edge of the sandstone, creating the cliff face, i.e., the escarpment slope. Where the escarpment runs inland, waterfalls are common. These include Munising and Miners Falls in the park.
Scenery, hiking trails and beaches are abundant. But this is Lake Superior, so ice can last well into late spring and the water is plenty cold all year long.
This slideshow focuses on sites located near Munising.
