BRMCC Rubyvale 2012
BRMCC run from Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia to Rubyvale in the States North. Spent a long weekend sitting around the fire having a few beers listening to some great entertainment from the locals (miners). We thanks Greg for his great hospitality staying at his home at the time, which was directly above his own mine.
Enjoyed by all as usual.
Week 6 | Yeppoon to Barcaldine | Caravanning Australia
Week 6 | Yeppoon to Barcaldine
Left Yeppoon and travelled to Emerald, QLD.....we spent 2x nights at the Higher Ground Homestead (found on Wiki Camps) Whilst there, we did a day trip to Sapphire/Rubyvale and visited the Miners Heritage Walk-in-mine.
From Emerald, we moved to Lara Wetlands - near Barcaldine....the actual campground is a good 30-45min drive out of Barcaldine. However is a great spot once you get there.
Kings Plains Sapphire - Journey to the Mine
Discovered in 1854, the Kings Plains Sapphire deposit is an ancient dry riverbed located northeast of the town of Inverell in the Australian state of New South Wales. Our Kings Plains Sapphire is sourced from the Wilson Gems Mine, a fourth generation mine to market family operation; the principal miner, John Wilson, has been working Australian Sapphire fields for 50 years. While the Kings Plains deposit is one of the richest Sapphire fields ever mined, less than 50 percent are of a rich royal blue color and for every one ton of earth processed only 6-8 carats of finished gems are extracted. Most Sapphire crystals mined range in size from a grain of sand to the size of a pea, which typically yields small accent gems to two carat gemstones. Larger gems are rarely found.
With mined land reclaimed into lush pastures replanted with native vegetation, the Wilson Gems Mine is environmentally friendly. As gullies and eroded areas are filled-in, the reclaimed pastures are actually more productive. The Australian Department of Mineral Resources actually wants every miner in the state of New South Wales to review the excellent rehabilitation processes at the Wilson Gems Mine.

A Gemfest special by 'Buck Outback'
M.C. of this year's 2012 Gemfest (the festival of gems out at Anakie, The Gemfields, QLD), who calls himself 'Buck Outback', needed to fill in a 10min break before the drawing of prizes at the close of the festival. He pondered about people wearing so little at the beach these days, wondering why do they bother wearing anything at all. A concerned lifeguard had apparently put him straight, so Buck serenaded festival goers with this revealing song.
