Mines of Spain
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the Mines of Spain Recreation Area spans over 1380 acres. The easement contains intriguing land forms, water types, as well as animal and plant species. While much of the original timber was logged off during the late 1800s, portions of the rugged Mines of Spain were left untouched, leaving burr oak trees over 250 years old.

Mines of Spain Statepark
Scary ridge top hiking trail that I had to bail from hiking on, but still cool walking in the old lead strip mine, also clips of Dubuque Monument and Indian Monuments. Very beautiful place to go in Iowa.

Mines of Spain Nature Preserve in Dubuque Iowa
This video was taken when we were visiting Dubuque Iowa on a vacation. We had so much fun walking around the area looking at the old historic buildings that were left. Very neat, but lots of walking. I would suggest checking out Mines of Spain if you are ever in the area.

Al Capone's Vault at Hotel Julien in Dubuque, Iowa
This is a video I took of the vault inside the Al Capone Suite at Hotel Julien in Dubuque, Iowa. In the late 1920's and 30's Al Capone lived at this hotel in this suite. It is also rumored that he may have actually owned the hotel. Inside the suite is this vault. He would trust two of his top men with the combination to the vault, who would lock him inside when authorities were searching for him. If you look outside the suite's picture window you can see the Mathis Building, an old warehouse where Capone stored his getaway vehicles. You can also see the bridge where Capone's men would keep an eye out for feds traveling into Dubuque from Illinois when pursuing Capone. It was really a cool experience to stay in the suit for the night and see the vault. The room was amazing - two bedrooms and two and half baths with a complete kitchen and dining room. It was loaded with original doors and woodwork that have been restored to their original state. It really took us back to that era. To think Capone was hanging out in the room back in the day was an experience in itself. If you ever get a chance to travel to Dubuque, check it out.
