Hanoi Old Quarter | CRAZY Cheap North Face!
Location: Hanoi Old Quarter
New Facebook Page -
Visiting the Old Quarter in Hanoi was by far my favorite activity in Hanoi, Vietnam! I could literally just walk around the old quarter for weeks without getting board. While walking around the old quarter in Hanoi you constantly have to dodge motor bikes! It really keeps you on your toes.
You never know what you're going to see when walking around the old quarter. One second you might see chickens playing in the road. The next minute you'll see hundreds of knock off Rolex watches. One thing that I guarantee you'll see TONS of stores selling cheap North Face apparel.
Apparently North Face apparel in Hanoi is cheap because the North Face factory is located in Vietnam? I don't know how true this is, but I do know that Kara scored a nice North Face puffy jacket for only $20 in the Old Quarter of Hanoi in a store called Made in Vietnam!

Vietnam War Documentary: Inside the Viet Cong - Tactics, Weapons, Tunnels, Uniform
The Viet Cong, or National Liberation Front (NLF), was a political organization and army in South Vietnam and Cambodia that fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War (1959--1975), and emerged on the winning side. More:
It had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized peasants in the territory it controlled. Many soldiers were recruited in South Vietnam, but others were attached to the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the regular North Vietnamese army. During the war, communists and anti-war spokesmen insisted the Viet Cong was an insurgency indigenous to the South, while the U.S. and South Vietnamese governments portrayed the group as a tool of Hanoi. This allowed writers to distinguish northern communists from the southern communists. However, as it turned out, northerners and southerners were always under the same command structure.[5]
Southern Vietnamese communists established the National Liberation Front in 1960 to encourage the participation of non-communists in the insurgency. Many of the Viet Cong's core members were regroupees, southern Vietminh who had resettled in the North after the Geneva Accord (1954). Hanoi gave the regroupees military training and sent them back to the South along the Ho Chi Minh trail in the early 1960s. The NLF called for Southerners to overthrow the camouflaged colonial regime of the American imperialists and to make efforts toward the peaceful unification. The Viet Cong's best-known action was the Tet Offensive, a massive assault on more than 100 South Vietnamese urban centers in 1968, including an attack on the US embassy in Saigon. The offensive riveted the attention of the world's media for weeks, but also overextended the Viet Cong. Later communist offensives were conducted predominately by the North Vietnamese. The group was dissolved in 1976 when North and South Vietnam were officially unified under a communist government.
The severe communist losses during Tet allowed the U.S. to gradually withdraw combat forces and to shift responsibility to the South Vietnamese, a process called Vietnamization. Pushed into Cambodia, the Viet Cong could no longer draw South Vietnamese recruits.[69] In May 1968, Trường Chinh urged protracted war in a speech that was published prominently in the official media, so the fortunes of his North first fraction may have revived at this time.[71] COSVN rejected this view as lacking resolution and absolute determination.[72] The Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 led to intense Sino-Soviet tension and to the withdrawal of Chinese forces from North Vietnam. Beginning in February 1970, Lê Duẩn's prominence in the official media increased, suggesting that he was again top leader and had regained the upper hand in his longstanding rivalry with Trường Chinh.[73] After the overthrow of Prince Sihanouk in March 1970, the Viet Cong faced a hostile Cambodian government which authorized a U.S. offensive against its bases in April. However, the capture of the Plain of Jars and other territory in Laos, as well as five provinces in northeastern Cambodia, allowed the North Vietnamese to reopen the Ho Chi Minh Trail.[74] Although 1970 was a much better year for the Viet Cong than 1969,[74] it would never again be more than an adjunct to the PAVN. The 1972 Easter Offensive was a direct North Vietnamese attack across the demilitarized zone between North and South.[75] Despite the Paris Peace Accords, signed by all parties in January 1973, fighting continued. In March, Trà was recalled to Hanoi for a series of meetings to hammer out a plan for a massive offense against Saigon.[76]
The Vietnam War: Reasons for Failure - Why the U.S. Lost
In the post-war era, Americans struggled to absorb the lessons of the military intervention. About the book:
As General Maxwell Taylor, one of the principal architects of the war, noted, First, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean War, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies... And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous.
Some have suggested that the responsibility for the ultimate failure of this policy [America's withdrawal from Vietnam] lies not with the men who fought, but with those in Congress... Alternatively, the official history of the United States Army noted that tactics have often seemed to exist apart from larger issues, strategies, and objectives. Yet in Vietnam the Army experienced tactical success and strategic failure... The...Vietnam War...legacy may be the lesson that unique historical, political, cultural, and social factors always impinge on the military...Success rests not only on military progress but on correctly analyzing the nature of the particular conflict, understanding the enemy's strategy, and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of allies. A new humility and a new sophistication may form the best parts of a complex heritage left to the Army by the long, bitter war in Vietnam.
U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail. Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion.
Doubts surfaced as to the effectiveness of large-scale, sustained bombing. As Army Chief of Staff Harold Keith Johnson noted, if anything came out of Vietnam, it was that air power couldn't do the job. Even General William Westmoreland admitted that the bombing had been ineffective. As he remarked, I still doubt that the North Vietnamese would have relented.
The inability to bomb Hanoi to the bargaining table also illustrated another U.S. miscalculation. The North's leadership was composed of hardened communists who had been fighting for independence for thirty years. They had defeated the French, and their tenacity as both nationalists and communists was formidable. Ho Chi Minh is quoted as saying, You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours...But even at these odds you will lose and I will win.
The Vietnam War called into question the U.S. Army doctrine. Marine Corps General Victor H. Krulak heavily criticised Westmoreland's attrition strategy, calling it wasteful of American lives... with small likelihood of a successful outcome. In addition, doubts surfaced about the ability of the military to train foreign forces.
Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit.
More than 3 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam. James E. Westheider wrote that At the height of American involvement in 1968, for example, there were 543,000 American military personnel in Vietnam, but only 80,000 were considered combat troops. Conscription in the United States had been controlled by the President since World War II, but ended in 1973.
By war's end, 58,220 American soldiers had been killed, more than 150,000 had been wounded, and at least 21,000 had been permanently disabled. According to Dale Kueter, Sixty-one percent of those killed were age 21 or younger. Of those killed in combat, 86.3 percent were white, 12.5 percent were black and the remainder from other races. The youngest American KIA in the war was PFC Dan Bullock, who had falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the US Marines at age 14 and who was killed in combat at age 15. Approximately 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffered symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. An estimated 125,000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid the Vietnam draft, and approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted. In 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter granted a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all Vietnam-era draft dodgers. The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, concerning the fate of U.S. service personnel listed as missing in action, persisted for many years after the war's conclusion.

8. Boa Viagem Beach, Brazil
Brazilian beaches are some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world!! Boa Viagem Beach is a beach that is located near the city of Recife and is surrounded by high-rise buildings and a beautiful boardwalk. So what’s the problem? Recife has one of the highest shark attack rates in the world. The water is plagued with tiger sharks and bull sharks, so people are warned to stay out of the ocean. Boa Viagem Beach is where most of the attacks have occurred and it is now considered one of the top 10 most dangerous beaches in the world.
This is a relatively new phenomenon as before the 1990’s there were no reported attacks. In the 1980’s a large port called Port Suape was built and during the construction they interrupted the breeding and hunting habitats of many kinds of sharks.
In the past 20 years, there have been almost 60 shark attacks in Recife with a death rate of 37%. According to the Florida State Museum of Natural History, this is much higher than the worldwide shark attack fatality rate which is currently 16%. This could partially be due to the fact that there are millions of beachgoers and lots of aggressive sharks sharing the water.
The waters off of Boa Viagem are so dangerous, that lifeguards no longer train there, but in a swimming pool instead. They receive special shark attack training and are equipped with an electronic device called a SharkShield to hopefully deter sharks when they are trying to rescue someone. Currently the only solution is a program that catches the sharks, tags them with tracking devices, and releases them far from the shore in an artificial reef.
7. Le Mat Snake Village, Vietnam
This village just outside Hanoi, is famous for its snake charmers and snake meat. This place is not for the faint of heart! Known as “snake village”, tourists can sample a wide variety of snake meat and swallow the still-beating heart of a cobra. The most popular snakes are grass snakes and cobras, and tourists go to the snake farms where they can touch the snakes before eating them. I’m not sure who is more afraid, the tourist or the snake!!
Legend has it that a snake swallowed a princess while she was on the lake. Her father, the King, promised to reward anyone who could save her. A peasant by the name of Le Mat rescued the Princess and the King honored him by giving him a fortune, and land, naming it after him. There is yearly festival from March 20th to 24th where villagers organize snake dance festivals in honor of the hero.
Adventurous tourists will drink the snake blood mixed with rice liquor and cheers. Bloody Mary herself would probably never drink that!
As you probably know, cobras are extremely venomous and can spit their venom into a victims eyes, causing blindness. Most of these snakes are kept in small cages and are extremely agitated before they are killed making it very dangerous to be near them since they are killed in front of you. If you are accidentally bitten you must get the antivenom immediately or you can die. Eating snake can have serious medical consequences, especially if it is consumed immediately and the place is unhygenic. The snake meat could easily have parasites, bacteria, and a high presence of heavy metals that you are consuming which could result in severe illness or disease. You could be killed by residual venom, or eat a contaminated bone. The snake’s head can still bite even 20 minutes after being cut off. Several chefs have died from severed head bites, even though they are used to preparing snake meat on a daily basis. Do you still want to try that cobra?
6. The Sahara Desert Tour
The Sahara desert in northern Africa is the largest, hottest desert in the world. Even though it is extremely harsh, tourists are flocking to the desert by the thousands for extreme tourism. If you have enough water, supplies, and a good guide, you should be completely fine. But that doesn’t mean you won’t see some of the most dangerous animals on the planet!
There are plenty of snakes and scorpions, including the deathstalker scorpion which is extremely venomous. This scorpion is about 4 in (10 cm) in length and usually hides under rocks but can be very aggressive when threatened.
Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

John Henry Faulk Interview: Education, Career, and the Hollywood Blacklist
John Henry Faulk (August 21, 1913--April 9, 1990) from Austin, Texas was a storyteller and radio show host. His successful lawsuit against blacklisters of the entertainment industry helped to bring an end to the Hollywood blacklist. More Faulk:
While a soldier at Camp Swift, Faulk began writing his own radio scripts. An acquaintance facilitated an interview for him at WCBS in New York City. The network executives were sufficiently impressed to offer him his own radio show. Upon his 1946 discharge from the Army, Faulk began his Johnny's Front Porch radio show for WCBS. The show featured Faulk's characterizations that he had been developing since his university years. Faulk eventually went to another radio station, but returned to WCBS for a four-hour morning talk show. The John Henry Faulk Show ran for six years. His radio successes provided opportunity for him to appear as himself on television, in shows like the 1951 Mark Goodson and William Todman game show It's News to Me, hosted by John Charles Daly. He also appeared on Leave It to the Girls in 1953 and The Name's the Same in 1955.
Cactus Pryor met Faulk in the studios of KLBJ (then KTBC) where Faulk stopped by to thank Pryor for letting his mother hear his New York show. Pryor had been accidentally broadcasting Faulk's radio show in Texas where Faulk was not otherwise heard. Although the broadcast happened repeatedly, Pryor always claimed he just hit the wrong button in the studio. Pryor visited Faulk at a Manhattan apartment he shared with Alan Lomax, and became introduced to the movers and shakers of the east coast celebrity scene of that era. When Pryor stood by Faulk during the blacklisting and tried to find him work, Pryor's children were harassed; a prominent Austin physician circulated a letter questioning Pryor's patriotism; an Austin attorney tried to convince Lyndon Johnson to discharge Pryor from the airwaves. The Pryor family and the Faulk family remained close and supportive of each other for the rest of Faulk's life.
In December 1955, Faulk was elected second vice president of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, to Orson Bean's first vice president position and Charles Collingwood as the president of the union. Collingswood, Bean and Faulk were part of a middle-of-the-road slate of non-communist, anti-AWARE organization candidates that Faulk had helped draft. Twenty-seven of thirty-five vacant seats on the board went to the middle-of-the-road slate. Faulk's public position during the campaign had been that the union should be focused on jobs and security, not blacklisting of members.
In the 1970s in Austin, he was also befriended by the young co-editor of the Texas Observer, Molly Ivins, and became an early supporter of hers.
