A Day in My Life: Tokyo, Japan
Majority of our videos are about travel and adventure, but not every day is like that. Our days are filled with cooking, doing chores in around our little home in Tokyo, and editing. So much editing!
In this video, Martina will give you a mini-tutorial on how she edits our YouTube videos, you'll get a slow cooker recipe from Simon, and despite Martina's struggles with her EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) getting in the way of her day, she works to #buildaladder and overcome her sadness. HECK YES!

A Hachiko Tribute
Hachikō (ハチ公?, November 10, 1923 -- March 8, 1935), known in Japanese as chūken Hachikō (忠犬ハチ公 faithful dog Hachikō ['hachi' meaning 'eight', a number referring to the dog's birth order in the litter, and 'kō', meaning prince or duke]), was an Akita dog born on a farm near the city of Ōdate, Akita Prefecture,[1] remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, even many years after his owner's death
Shibuya Station as it was in the Taisho and Pre-war Showa eras (1912--1945)
In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took in Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner's life, Hachikō greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Every day for the next nine years the dog waited at Shibuya station.
Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly. However, after the first appearance of the article about him on October 4, 1932 in Asahi Shimbun, people started to bring Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait. This continued for nine years with Hachikō appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.[2]
[edit] Publication
That same year, one of Ueno's students (who developed expertise on the Akita breed) saw the dog at the station and followed him to the Kobayashi home (the home of the former gardener of Professor Ueno—Kikuzaboro Kobayashi[3]) where he learned the history of Hachikō's life. Shortly after this meeting, the former student published a documented census of Akitas in Japan. His research found only 30 purebred Akitas remaining, including Hachikō from Shibuya Station.
He returned frequently to visit Hachikō and over the years published several articles about the dog's remarkable loyalty. In 1932 one of these articles, published in Tokyo Asahi Shimbun, threw the dog into the national spotlight. Hachikō became a national sensation. His faithfulness to his master's memory impressed the people of Japan as a spirit of family loyalty all should strive to achieve. Teachers and parents used Hachikō's vigil as an example for children to follow. A well-known Japanese artist rendered a sculpture of the dog, and throughout the country a new awareness of the Akita breed grew.
Eventually, Hachikō's legendary faithfulness became a national symbol of loyalty, particularly to the person and institution of the Emperor.[4]
[edit] Death
Last known photo of Hachikō - pictured with his owner's wife Yaeko Ueno (front row, second from right) and station staff in mourning in Tokyo on March 8, 1935.
Hachikō died on March 8, 1935, and was found on a street in Shibuya.[5] In March 2011 scientists settled the cause of death of Hachikō: the dog had terminal cancer and a filaria infection (worms). There were also four yakitori skewers in Hachikō's stomach, but the skewers did not damage his stomach or cause his death.[6][7]
Hachikō's stuffed and mounted remains are kept at the National Science Museum of Japan in Ueno, Tokyo.[8][9] His monument is in Aoyama cemetery in Minatoku, Tokyo

Crows: Smarter Than You Think with UW Professor John Marzluff
Did you know that crows can remember your face and hold a grudge? Professor John Marzluff from College of the Environment has studied these loud, boisterous, and extremely intelligent birds for more than 20 years. In this Whole U seminar he breaks down common misconceptions about avian intelligence, and helps us explore the amazing brains of crows. You will learn about the commonalities between human brains and bird brains, crows’ ability to speak different languages, and their ability to learn from human activities and mimic them. Just be warned, by the end of Dr. Marzluff's seminar you might develop a new obsession for these incredible birds!
Japan House Designing the Future symposium (October 25, 2018)
Hitoshi Abe welcomes the audience to an exploration, sponsored by Japan House Los Angeles & SCI-Arc, of what “the future” might mean in the context of the present. He introduces the first speaker, Liam Young.
At 5:26, Liam Young presents clips from narrative and documentary videos, providing a running commentary that alternately describes specific images and identifies general themes, including productive dystopias, technological solutionism, lithium mining in Chile and Bolivia, the dreamlife of render farm workers, intelligent habitations, intelligent objects, and “augmented and A.I.-everything.” He proposes that they all derive from a belief that the future is not something that washes over us, but something we must actively shape and define for ourselves.
At 24:13, Peter Frankfurt discusses Imaginary Forces, noting that since forming as a design production company in 1996 “the world has changed three or four times,” and that the challenge is really to try to keep up, as “the future is designing us.” He demonstrates the rate of change with a clip from “Minority Report” (2002), in which their vision of a gestural interface has gone from impossible to taken for granted. He stresses story-telling as the core of their work, as demonstrated in a brand campaign video for HBO, and a logo animation exploration of Luminous Productions.
At 41:38, Sou Fujimoto proposes a “primitive future,” fusing nature and culture, rural and urban. He reviews several projects in terms of these themes, including …
• Primitive Future House (2001)
• House NA, Tokyo (2011)
• Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2013)
• Public toilet, Ichihara (2013)
• House N, Oita (2008)
• Musashino University museum and library (2010)
• Learning center for the University of St. Gallen (2022) order and chaos,
• Residential tower, Montpellier (2019)
• The Souk Mirage project
• Residential tower, Nice (2021)
• And two, recently announced mixed-use projects in Paris: Vertical Village and Mille Arbres
At 1:04:39, Hitoshi Abe, Liam Young, Peter Frankfurt, and Sou Fujimoto debate some of the issues raised by the presentations, including types of futures, the future-focus of architectural practice, consumer technology, the future as a sales tool, story-telling, creating options and choices, utopias of the imagination. The participants some of their own future projects.
At 1:34:58, the participants respond to comments from the audience on the urban/rural opposition, unforeseen circumstances, novel forms of production, working with restrictions, narratives, demystification, sustainability, digital revolution, and complexity.

Somaly Mam: Cambodian Activist, Humanitarian and Survivor of Sex Slavery
Speaker: Somaly Mam, Founder and President, Somaly Mam Foundation
Moderator: Jane Wales, President and CEO, World Affairs Council
I have come to learn that the power of personal stories is that they can touch people deeply, with the potential to evoke great passion, dedication and commitment to a cause. I never cease to be inspired and encouraged by such reactions to my story, and this gives me further strength to continue sharing my painful past. Sharing can bring about human connection, understanding, acceptance and motivation for change. As an activist, to be able to foster love and positive action for those in need is a dream come true. I often say that 'life is love,' a meaningful life must contain love, and in order to love we must share our lives, our stories, our hearts.
These are the words of Somaly Mam, a Cambodian human rights activist and human trafficking survivor. She has been honored as one of Fast Company's 2012 League of Extraordinary Women, one of Fortune Magazine's Most Powerful Women in 2011, one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2009, a CNN Hero and Glamour Magazine's 2006 Woman of the Year. In addition she is also the recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation and The World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child (WCPRC) Award, among others.
This event is presented in paternship with the International Museum of Women and Vital Voices.

Eiko & Koma: Regeneration @ YBCA
Performance artists Eiko & Koma reflect on their 40-year body of work with iconic performance pieces, new work and collaborations, including Kronos Quartet. With the Retrospective Project, Eiko & Koma seek not to summarize the past, but to find artistic ways forward in the eternal present.
About Eiko & Koma:
Eiko (female) and Koma (male) were law and political science students in Japan when, in 1971, they each joined the Tatsumi Hijikata company in Tokyo. Their collaboration began as an experiment and then developed into an exclusive partnership. The following year, they started to work as independent artists in Tokyo and at the same time began to study with Kazuo Ohno, who along with Hijikata was the central figure in the Japanese avant-garde theatrical movement of the 1960s. Neither Eiko nor Koma studied traditional Japanese dance or theater forms, and have preferred to choreograph and perform only their own works.
Their interest in Neue Tanz, the German modern dance movement that flourished alongside the Bauhaus movement in art and architecture, and their desire to explore non-verbal theater took them to Hanover, Germany in 1972. There they studied with Manja Chmiel, a disciple of Mary Wigman. In 1973, they moved to Amsterdam, and for the next two years toured extensively in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Tunisia. It was the late Lucas Hoving, a wonderful dancer who had toured with the early José Limón Dance Company, who encouraged them to go to America.
The Japan Society sponsored the first American performance of Eiko & Koma's White Dance in May of 1976. Since then, they have presented their works at theaters, universities, museums, galleries and festivals across North America, Europe and Japan.
Eiko & Koma's noted stage collaborations include Hunger (2008, with Cambodian painters-turned-performers Peace and Charian), Mourning (2007, with pianist Margaret Leng Tan), Cambodian Stories (2006, with the Reyum Painting Collective of young Cambodian artists), Be With (2001, with Anna Halprin and Joan Jeanrenaud), When Nights Were Dark (2000, with Joseph Jennings and a Praise Choir), the proscenium version of River (1997, with Kronos Quartet, who performed Somei Satoh's commissioned score live), and Land (1991, with Robert Mirabal).
