Cai Zhiqun - Aria from Pi Pa Ji 蔡植群 - 潮剧琵琶记之蔡伯喈认像
Cai Zhiqun (蔡植群), veteran Chaozhou opera actor of Cheng Hai Chaozhou Opera Troupe (广东澄海潮剧团) performs the leading role of Cai Bojie (蔡伯喈) in the classic play Pi Pa Ji (琵琶记 Story of the Pipa).
This opera is based on a play written during the late Yuan Dynasty. Scholar Cai Bojie (蔡伯喈) leaves his aged parents in the care of his filial wife Zhao Wuniang (赵五娘) to sit for the imperial examination. He passes with flying colours but attracts the attention of the Chief Minister who forces him to wed his daughter. Cai begs to surrender his title for freedom to return to his family, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, heart-broken from the lack of news from Cai and a severe famine results in the tragic demise of Cai's parents. Zhao Wuniang buries her in-laws and draws a portrait of them. With the portrait and a pipa (string instrument) in hand, she begs her way to the imperial city to look for her husband.
The spunky lady soon makes her way to the household of the Chief Minister's family, masquerading as a servant. Thanks to the compassionate and understanding daughter of the wicked Chief Minister, the couple is eventually reunited.
In this scene, Cai Bojie is unaware that his first wife, Zhao Wuniang, has entered his household in the capital city and been accepted by his other wife. The two ladies pin the portrait of his parents in the hall, and wait for his reaction. It does not take long for him to identify the characters in the painting and the the signature strokes of his beloved wife, Zhao.
Cai Zhiqun delivers a powerful aria, with a very classical Teochew feel to it - a rendition that is both heart-wrenching and masterful.

When we were growing up we were still being educated very much like, hey, you are a Chinese rather than, you know, you are a Taiwanese. So growing up like that, thinking that I'm Chinese and coming here to the United States and then walking on the street when I'm making new friends I would hear, you know, people come and ask me, “So, OK, What do you know about China?” Or, How does One Child Policy affect you? And I'll be like OK I do know something about China, because that's what I learned in school. But One Child Policy doesn't really affect me because I was from Taiwan, so it's very interesting that after coming to the United States, my Taiwanese identity suddenly just grow grew stronger.
I came here in 2005 when I was 22 years old. I just graduated from university in Taiwan and I came here for a master degree. I found a place to stay in an apartment to share with other international students from Taiwan in Brooklyn, in Dyker Heights. It was just sort of tipping over from a population where it used to be quite Italian-American to more Asian at that point.
I would sometimes hear like my neighbors were passengers… passerbys speaking to each other when I was very sure at that point that the language that they were speaking to each other were Vietnamese. I thought they were Vietnamese. But later on I learned that there is a big group of Chinese immigrants coming from Fujian Province to the United States especially to the east coast since the late 80s and 90s. So Taiwanese was originally from Fujian … it’s a southern-style Fujianese that we speak in Taiwan. Of course, it changed a little bit. And my neighbors in Dyker Heights they were from Northern Fujian so it's actually not you know very far away, but the Fujianese that they were speaking I completely cannot understand. And I thought it was a completely different language that I have been speaking growing up.

Jade Emperor
The Jade Emperor in Chinese culture, traditional religions and myth is one of the representations of the first god. In Taoist theology he is Yuanshi Tianzun, one of the Three Pure Ones, the three primordial emanations of the Tao. He is also the Cao Đài of Caodaism.
The Jade Emperor is known by many names, including Heavenly Grandfather, which originally meant Heavenly Duke, which is used by commoners; the Jade Lord the Highest Emperor, Great Emperor of Jade.

Zhou Yongkang Under Control?

On April 24, Xinhua News Agency published an article
in a high profile, written on March 26th by Zhou Yongkang.
Zhou is a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Politburo
Standing Committee' member and a head of CCP's Political and Legislative Affairs Committee (PLAC).
The article was taken from Zhou's speech a month ago,
in the first training of PLAC national leaders.
An expert thinks this high profile old news publication
shows that Zhou is being under full control.
Shi Zangshan, Washington-based expert on China issues,
analyzed that the messages in the article are from Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao.
It not only resets the functions of CCP's PLAC,
but it also completely negates what Zhou did in the past.
In addition, it refutes the work done by the PLAC.
Zhou was, in fact, was being spoken.
Shi Zangshan: Hu and Wen repeated the speech again
on April 24th. Their intention is clear.
When overseas Chinese media spread such false news that
Jiang Zemin came forward, the article indicates that
Hu and Wen are showing that 'Zhou has been completely
controlled', he was being spoken'on month ago.
Foreign media: Bo Xilai eavesdropped Hu Jintao's phone
In addition to the news of Zhou being controlled, the news
of Bo eavesdropping Hu's phone was exposed on April 26th, by a number of mainstream Western media.
According to BBC Chinese Net' reports, in order to move up
in CCP, Bo had carried out massive activities of eavesdropping on high officials of CCP.
The report quoted Reuter's news that anonymous CCP insider
said, Bo installed eavesdropping devices in Chongqing Guo Hotel where high ranking officials often stayed.
Last August, when Hu Jintao was talking with Chongqing
senior official, it was found that the phone was spied, which was done by Chongqing officials.
New York Times reported on Thursday that a dozen
of close to CCP people have confirmed the eavesdropping.
It said that a few years ago, an extensive eavesdropping
network was established throughout Chongqing City.
The reports quoted words of CCP insiders that this
eavesdropping program was seen as a direct challenge to the leadership of CCP central committee in Beijing.
It is also another factor
that led to Bo's removal from position.
Victims of hit the black campaign continue to appeal
With the downfall of Bo Xilai and Wang Lijun,
more plots of the campaign hit the black are being exposed.
Recently, a number of the campaign's victims
appealed for innocence, and requested a retrial.
Radio Free Asia reported of Li Jun to be one of the victims,
since he was a wealthy businessman.
His assets of RMB4.5 billion were confiscated overnight,
and about 30 family members and staffs were implicated.
His older brother Li Xiuwu and nephew Zheng Ou
were sentenced to heavy prison terms.
Now Li Xiuwu and Zheng Ou, serving the sentence,
consigned their lawyer to reverse the verdict, and were permitted to meet with their lawyer to discuss the case.
Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reported, the wives
of three policemen said their husbands were also wrongly accused in the hit the black campaign in Chongqing.
These policemen were subjected to torture during the trials.
Now they want to appeal too.
The British' Financial Times also reported
about such appeals in the past two weeks.
Chongqing billionaire Peng Zhimin and at least 10 other
people claimed they were unfairly treated and ask for retrials.

Shantou Villagers’ Protest Meets Bloody CCP Crackdown
Follow us on TWITTER:

Tragedies over forced demolitions and officials profiteering
from land sales are widespread in China.
Clashes have also intensified; the number of cases have
risen from being in the tens, to hundreds or even thousands.
Facing heavily armed police, it’s always
the defenseless citizens who are hurt.
Sept. 26—At 8am, thousands of villagers from Shantou,
Guangdong Province, protested in front of the City Hall,
demanding the return of their land and an investigation
to be made by the newly-arrived central inspection team
into the corrupt Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials
who are profiteering through illegal land sales.
The villagers gathered in a sit-in protest with a banner
signed by tens-of-thousands wanting confiscated land back.
But after a long wait, who greeted them were not officials
but hundreds of heavily armed riot police.
Ms. Lin, Villager: Around 12:50pm, about 200 riot police
came armed, and told us to clear the scene.”
“They beat people with batons, paying no regard to
whether they were the elderly, children or youth.”
“The police ripped the clothes of elderly people who were
over 70 years old and kept hitting their heads badly.
The riot police lashed out, hitting whoever they saw,
injuring many villagers.
People tried to escape, but the police ran after them
and even used tear gas.
Ms. Lin: It was too chaotic and bloody and I was shaking
the whole time; I’ve never seen such a scene.”
“It’s hard to believe the government would do this
to defenseless villagers—the bloodshed was non-stop;
we started to run, but the police wouldn’t let go,
instead they threw tear gas at us.”
“We just kept retreating to the other side of the square,
but the tear gas never stopped; we couldn’t talk
and our tears kept running.
The villagers say the tear gas was not used to expel people,
but to make them lose resistance, so they could be arrested;
even injured villagers at the hospitals have been arrested.
Ms. Lin: We were so badly injured that we had to see doctors
with bleeding that wouldn’t stop, or some had a cracked skull,
and others with broken arms; the local hospitals have received
many injured villagers, mostly elderly, in their 70s or 80s.”
“It was scary; their faces and bodies were covered in blood,
but the police arrested people even at the hospitals.
The Epoch Times reported that after the clashes on the 26th,
thousands of police arrived in around 300 police vehicles.
The arrests continued into the 27th, and some police
were armed with pistols, according to the villagers.
For over a decade, local officials have been selling forests,
beaches and arable lands, by secretly forging the signatures
of villagers, and pocketing hundreds-of-millions of yuan
from the land sales.
Since 2012, villagers have been petitioning for
an investigation, but rather than fulfilling their roles,
authorities have had many villagers arrested,
and clashes have taken the place of discussions.
Huang Qi, founder of human rights website, 64tianwang.com:
The land acquisitions through demolitions are backed up by
vested interest groups, who profit from the extremely low cost
of acquiring land from farmers.”
“Once the victims protest, the officials suppress them
with armed forces, to safeguard their own vested interests.
Huang Qi says, following increasing awareness of civil rights
and seeing the distress of many landless peasants due to
the forced demolitions and land acquisitions, more people
will be standing up and saying no to the greedy CCP officials.
On 28th, afternoon, the Shantou City Public Security Bureau
attended a press conference and argued that the violent rioting
was due to a gambling case that provoked certain villagers.
A total of 26 people have been detained and charged,
according to reports.

Guangzhou (simplified Chinese: 广州; traditional Chinese: 廣州; Cantonese pronunciation: [kʷɔ̌ːŋ.tsɐ̂u] or [kʷɔ̌ːŋ.tsɐ́u] (listen); Mandarin pronunciation: [kwàŋ.ʈʂóu] (listen)), also known as Canton, is the capital and most populous city of the province of Guangdong in southern China. On the Pearl River about 120 km (75 mi) north-northwest of Hong Kong and 145 km (90 mi) north of Macau, Guangzhou has a history of over 2,200 years and was a major terminus of the maritime Silk Road, and continues to serve as a major port and transportation hub, as well as one of China's three largest cities.Guangzhou is at the heart of the most-populous built-up metropolitan area in mainland China that extends into the neighboring cities of Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Shenzhen, forming one of the largest urban agglomerations on the planet. Administratively, the city holds sub-provincial status and is one of China's nine National Central Cities. In 2015, the city's administrative area was estimated to have a population of 13,501,100. Guangzhou is ranked as an Alpha global city. There is a rapidly increasing number of foreign temporary residents and immigrants from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa. This has led to it being dubbed the Capital of the Third World. The domestic migrant population from other provinces of China in Guangzhou was 40% of the city's total population in 2008. Together with Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, Guangzhou has one of the most expensive real estate markets in China. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, nationals of sub-Saharan Africa who had initially settled in the Middle East and other parts of Southeast Asia moved in unprecedented numbers to Guangzhou, China in response to the 1997/8 Asian financial crisis.Long the only Chinese port accessible to most foreign traders, Guangzhou fell to the British during the First Opium War. No longer enjoying a monopoly after the war, it lost trade to other ports such as Hong Kong and Shanghai, but continued to serve as a major entrepôt. In modern commerce, Guangzhou is best known for its annual Canton Fair, the oldest and largest trade fair in China. For the three consecutive years 2013–2015, Forbes ranked Guangzhou as the best commercial city on the Chinese mainland.

SUMMARY
=======
Shenzhen (, Mandarin: [ʂə́n.ʈʂə̂n] (listen)) is a major city in Guangdong Province, China; it forms part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis, bordering Hong Kong to the south, Huizhou to the northeast, and Dongguan to the northwest. It holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than those of a province.
Shenzhen, which roughly follows the administrative boundaries of Bao'an County, officially became a city in 1979, taking its name from the former county town, whose train station was the last stop on the Mainland Chinese section of the railway between Canton and Kowloon. In 1980, Shenzhen was established as China's first special economic zone. Shenzhen's registered population as of 2017 was estimated at 12,905,000. However, local police and authorities estimate the actual population to be about 20 million, due to large populations of short-term residents, unregistered floating migrants, part-time residents, commuters, visitors, as well as other temporary residents. Shenzhen was one of the fastest-growing cities in the world in the 1990s and the 2000s and has been ranked second on the list of ‘top 10 cities to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet.Shenzhen's cityscape results from its vibrant economy - made possible by rapid foreign investment following the institution of the policy of reform and opening-up in 1979. The city is a leading global technology hub, dubbed by media as the next Silicon Valley.Shenzhen hosts the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous multinational companies such as JXD, Vanke, Hytera, CIMC, SF Express, Shenzhen Airlines, Nepstar, Hasee, Ping An Bank, Ping An Insurance, China Merchants Bank, Tencent, ZTE, Huawei, DJI and BYD. Shenzhen ranks 14th in the 2019 Global Financial Centres Index. It has one of the busiest container ports in the world.
