25th December 2017 - Kareri Lake Snow Trek
At an altitude of 3250 meters above the sea level, to the south of Dharamshala in the kangra distict of himachal Pradesh lies a picturesque small glacial kareri lake. Kareri Lake is a high altitude, shallow, fresh water lake nestled around the dhauladhar mountain ranges of Himachal pradesh. Kareri Lake serves as a base for trekking further into the Dhauladhar and onward from kangra to Chamba and Bharmour via the Minkiani Pass and Baleni Pass.
The melting snow glacier from the dhauladhar range serves as the main source of the lake and its outflow stream nyund.
The trail to kareri lake is quite serene as it passes through the forest of Rhododenderon (State Flower of Himachal Pradesh), oak , pine tree and various water streams.
The Lake remains frozen from mid January to March during the winter months when only exclusive Snow trek is possible to the lake and during summer the surrounding meadows are rich in grass.
The trek offers richer and tranquil experience to the trekker. This easy difficulty trek, good for both beginners and experienced trekkers.

LAMDAL YATRA 2019
The Dhauladhars range is home of pristine glacial lakes which are considered to be an abode of Lord Shiva and Shakti. Many pilgrims and local residents throng the area during monsoons to take a holy dip into the lakes. Dal means lake in the local language and 13 lakes are accessible and can be trekked easily. Lam Dal and Nag Dal being the most prominent ones. Many lakes have already been visited by the local shepherds during migration with their flocks to Kangra Valley. Situated at an elevation of 3900 m, Lam Dal is reachable from kangra from 3 passes that are Minkiani Pass, Indrahar Pass and Gaj Pass & from chamba side Lam Dal is reachable from Dharwala(via Tur & Brehi), Chhatrari(via Dhamghori Dal) & Kuarsi Village(via Nag Dal & Chanderkoop Dal). It is apparently the largest and deepest lake in the area with a circumference of about 2.5 km. One can notice small caves around the lake which are mostly used by local shepherds called Gaddi. Camping around the lake is bound to leave you mesmerised. The trek to Lam Dal Lake begins from the captivating region of Dharwala. Trekkers then reach (Tur or Brehi) through shared taxi and then reach Durkund, which is a 10-km trek, thereafter it’s a 15-km trek to Lam Dal.

Triund and Kareri Lake Trek
1)Triund Hill, with its actual top point at 10,632 feet (3240.6336 meters) and temple of Kunal Pathri Devi,
hosts a ridge and the first camp-site Triund between 9150 to 9414 ft (2788.92 to 2869.387 m).
The second high camp-site, SnowLine Café, is at around 3250 meters. One can trek to the real top point that is 10,632 ft (3240.6336 m)
from the backside of SnowLine Cafe
From this top point you can enjoy 360° panoramic views of Triund Hill, Kangra Valley and wider view of Dhauladhar Mountains.
Rather than terming Trekking to Triund, it is more like Hiking as the trail is properly marked with 100% visibility and no
chance of getting lost (unless one tries to get lost intentionally).
In Trekking you have to trace the trails and trek and sometimes do bush-whacking to make new trail, while in Hiking your just
need to follow the laid out trek and trails.
*The trekking trail to Indrahar pass starts from Galu Devi temple above Dharamkot village near Dharamsala and passes
through the camping ground of Triund, Ilaqua/Laka Got, and Lahesh Caves. On the other side of the pass, the camping sites include
Chhata caves at 3242 metres and Kuarsi village in Chamba at 2260 metres.
The trek starts from McLeod Ganj and continues as follows:
McLeod Ganj main market (1750m) to Galu Devi temple at Upper Dharamkot (2100m) | 2 km | 1-2 hour walk OR a 45-minute cab ride
Galu Devi temple (2100m) to Triund (2825m) | 2-3.5 hrs walk (mix of easy and uphill)
Triund (2825m) to Snowline Cafe | 1-2 hour uphill walk
Snowline Cafe to Ilaqua Got (grazing grounds) | 1 hour easy walk (mostly flat/downhill)
Ilaqua to Lahesh cave (3300 m) 2-3 hours.
Lahesh Cave to Indrahar Pass (4300m) | 2–6 hours of steep climb.

*Best time to visit Kareri Lake
The best time to visit the Kareri Lake is during the Indian summer season.
May to July and September to November are the best months to visit the Kareri Lake.
How to reach
The best way to reach the Kareri Lake is to hire a jeep from Dharamshala to Ghera village,
which is around 20 kilometres away from the lake. From the main bazaar, proceed towards the bridge,
crossing over Bhote Khosi. After crossing the bridge, take a left and trek upwards, straight along the Kareri stream.
The trail diverges here. Stick to the one that goes along the river. Around 30 minutes into the hike,
the forested trail will lead you to a government school. This is Sari Village. The trek from here is another
two kilometre-long ascent to the Kareri Village.
