Which state is called the land of the 10,000 lakes? Hot summers and very very cold winters? Find out about the rivalry of the twin cities, favorite outdoor sports and other interesting facts from Minnesota. #50states #MN
Transcript:
Hello, my name is Robert Mevissen and I'm an intern working in the Political Economic section of the American Embassy here in Vienna. I am from the great state of Minnesota, which is located in the middle of the United States and shares its northern border with Canada.
Because Minnesota is as far away from the ocean as the middle of Siberia and quite far north, we have very hot summers and very very cold winters. Temperatures can range from 46 degrees Celsius in the summer to minus 51 degrees in the winter.
Despite the extreme weather, we Minnesotans love to be outside. During the summer we go canoeing, camping, biking and swimming. And in the winter we can have a meter or more of snow on the ground, so we like to go sledding and cross-country skiing, as well as playing a Canadian sport called Broomball. But we especially enjoy activities on or near water.
The slogan for our state is the land of 10,000 lakes and while we aren't near the ocean, our lakes provide more shoreline than California, Hawaii and Florida combined! These lakes were actually formed millions of years ago by huge glaciers scraping the region's landscape. But we Minnesotans like to tell the legend of Paul Bunyan - a giant lumberjack- whose enormous footsteps formed the lakes while he wandered around lost in a blinding snowstorm with his pet ox, Babe.
The large number of lakes in our state plays an important role for the people and history of Minnesota.
The state's name itself comes from the American Indian tribes who lived there- Minnesota translates from the Dakota language as sky-tinted or sky-colored water. These tribes hunted and fished along the lakes, and some of their most important activities and ways of life still influence Minnesotans today.
For example, tribes harvested wild rice from the northern lakes, drilled holes in the ice to go fishing in the winter, as well as collected sap from maple trees to make syrup. When I was growing up my family always made wild rice soup throughout the winter to keep us warm. Fish fries are also common social gatherings in Minnesota.
Because Minnesota is heavily forested in the north, more than half of Minnesota's population lives in or around the Twin Cities down in the south. The term twin refers to both the state capital Saint Paul and its sister city Minneapolis. Both cities are along the Mississippi river. For many years, the two cities were bitter rivals and as a result, all of our sports teams today like the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves have to be Minnesotan and cannot be named for either city.
Historically, both cities were settled by different immigrant groups from Europe. Swedes, Norwegians and Finns influenced the development of Minneapolis. Today the city appears much more modern with huge skyscrapers, famous music halls, and an abundance of theaters. Saint Paul, on the other hand, was settled by German, Irish and French immigrants and it has remained much more traditional with late Victorian-era European-looking architecture.
Now that you know more about Minnesota, come and discover it yourself! Whether you love exploring the great outdoors on your bike and in your canoe, or if you prefer visiting art museums and attending orchestra concerts, there is something for everyone here. You know you've arrived when you hear the friendly Minnesotan exclamations Oofda! and Ya sure you betcha!

Here is a video of Minneapolis !
Minneapolis, nicknamed City of Lakes and the Mill City, is the county seat of Hennepin County, the largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and the 48th largest in the United States. Its name is attributed to the city's first schoolteacher, who combined mni, the Dakota word for water, and polis, the Greek word for city.
Minneapolis lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. Known as the Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul is the 16th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S., with 3.5 million residents. The Metropolitan Council estimated the city's population in 2009 as 386,691.
The city is abundantly rich in water with over twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi river, creeks and waterfalls, many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. It was once the world's flour milling capital and a hub for timber, and today is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle. Named America's most literate city, it has cultural organizations that draw creative people and audiences to the city for theater, visual art, writing, and music. The community's diverse population has a long tradition of charitable support through progressive public social programs, as well as private and corporate philanthropy.
The region is second only to New York City in live theater per capital and is the third-largest theater market in the U.S. after New York and Chicago, supporting the Illusion, Jungle, Mixed Blood, Penumbra, Mu Performing Arts, Bedlam Theatre, the Brave New Workshop, the Minnesota Dance Theatre, Red Eye, Skewed Visions, Theater Latté Da, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts, and the Children's Theatre Company. The city is home to Minnesota Fringe Festival, the United States' largest nonjuried performing arts festival. French architect Jean Nouvel designed a new three stage complex for the Guthrie Theater, a prototype alternative to Broadway founded in Minneapolis in 1963. Minneapolis purchased and renovated the Orpheum, State, and Pantages Theatres vaudeville and film houses on Hennepin Avenue now used for concerts and plays. Eventually, a fourth renovated theater joined the Hennepin Center for the Arts to become the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, to be completed in 2011 and a home to more than one dozen performing arts groups and a provider of Web-based art education.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, built in 1915 in south central Minneapolis is the largest art museum in the city with 100,000 pieces in its permanent collection. A new wing designed by Michael Graves was completed in 2006 for contemporary and modern works and more gallery space. The Walker Art Center sits atop Lowry Hill, near downtown, and doubled its size with an addition in 2005 by Herzog & de Meuron and is continuing its expansion to 15 acres (6.1 ha) with a park designed by Michel Desvigne across the street from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The Weisman Art Museum, designed by Frank Gehry for the University of Minnesota, opened in 1993. An addition, also designed by Gehry, is expected to open in 2011.

How Minneapolis became the first to end single-family zoning
To help address a housing shortage, Minneapolis became the first large American city to end single-family zoning, the rules that restrict certain neighborhoods to single-family homes. Now, buildings with up to three units can be built on any residential lot. Leaders hope this, and other plans, will add new units, create density and remedy segregation. NewsHour Weekend's Megan Thompson reports.

Minneapolis, Minnesota - Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport Tram (2019)
The Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport Trams consist of a pair of cable-drawn automated people movers that serve travelers of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. Both were constructed by the Poma-Otis Transit Company of Farmington, Connecticut and are operated under the direction of the Metropolitan Airports Commission.
Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (IATA: MSP, ICAO: KMSP, FAA LID: MSP), also less commonly known as Wold–Chamberlain Field, is a joint civil-military public use international airport. It is located in a portion of Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States, within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of both downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. MSP is the largest and busiest airport in the six-state Upper Midwest region of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. A joint civil-military airport, MSP is also home to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport Joint Air Reserve Station, supporting both Air Force Reserve Command and Air National Guard flight operations.
The airport is mostly located in the census-designated place of Fort Snelling in an unincorporated portion of Hennepin County. Small sections of the airport are within the city limits of Minneapolis and Richfield. However, per Minnesota state law, the land on which the airport sits is not part of any city or school district. MSP covers 2,930 acres (1,186 ha) of land.
In 2017, Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport was the 17th busiest airport in the United States. The airport was named best Airport in North America among air terminals that serve 25 to 40 million passengers annually, the second largest category, in 2016, 2017 and 2018 by The Airports Council International. The airport generates an estimated $15.9 billion a year for the Twin Cities' economy and supports 87,000 workers.
MSP is the third largest hub airport for Delta Air Lines and its Delta Connection partners by passenger traffic. It also serves as the home airport for Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines. Delta Air Lines and its regional affiliates account for about 70% of the airport's passenger traffic. The airport is operated by the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which also handles the operation of six smaller airports in the region.

Minneapolis grapples with sudden homeless camp
(27 Sep 2018) A homeless camp made up mainly of Native Americans has sprung up in Minneapolis near a highway. The encampment, called the Wall of Forgotten Natives, sits along a highway sound wall just south of downtown.
The camp started small this summer and has swelled to several hundred people. A hygiene tent is set up where people can get medical care, take showers or apply for housing. But city officials know that's not sustainable, especially as winter approaches.
Maggie Thunder Hawk, an Oglala Lakota from South Dakota, is living at the camp with her four adult children. She says she would love to have her own apartment or house. Minneapolis has a large Native American population, and the camp has attracted members of 51 tribes from across the United States.
Drugs and alcohol are a problem at the camp, which features a needle exchange for drug users. Two recent deaths were reported, and officials hope to get the camp's residents into more stable long-term housing.
At an emergency meeting on Wednesday, the City Council approved a plan to use land that's primarily owned by the Red Lake Nation as the site for a navigation center, which will include temporary shelters and services.
Because buildings need to be demolished, that site might not be ready until early December, concerning at least one council member. But Sam Strong of the Red Lake Nation said it's possible the process could be expedited. Once camp residents are safe for the winter, finding more stable, long-term housing will be the goal. Several families have already been moved to shelters.
