Minneriya National Park (Habarana)
Minneriya National Park is a national park in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring the area as protected is to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank is of historical importance, having been built by King Mahasen in third century AD. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. The park earned revenue of Rs. 10.7 millions in the six months ending in August 2009.[2] Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of Sri Lanka.[3] The park is situated 182 kilometres (113 mi) from Colombo.

Located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa, Kaudulla National Park presents ample opportunities for avid travellers to get up close and personal with the majestic elephants that amble about along the elephant corridor between Somawathiya National Park and the Minneriya National Park. Standing on the fringe of the ancient Kaudulla Lake which is the lifeblood for most creatures, it attracts exotic animals such as Sambar deer, the occasional rusty spotted cats and even Sloth Bears on a good day. The place is an absolute wildlife spectacle and a safari around the national park is a definite bucket-list aspiration for many locals and tourists alike.

JEEP SAFARI - Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka
Minneriya National Park is in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938.
The trip was booked as a package at our hotel (the Sevonrich Holiday Resort, Dambulla). We could not have had a better time with our guide Chamara and driver Jeewan - thank you both.

My driver Sonny took me to Minneriya National Park to see the wild elephants. He lost his hat it blew off when we were on the back of the safari truck. I hired Sonny and his car in Colombo to drive me around the cultural triangle. I was lucky to get such a nice guy. Sri Lankan ELEPHANT SAFARI. My Jeep Got Stuck! ????????
Out of all the Jeeps in all of Sri Lanka, it had to be my Jeep that got stuck in a stream. Despite this hiccup I did enjoy a nice couple of hours in Minneriya National Park where hundreds of wild elephants live.
Minneriya National Park is located in Habarana and is very close to Sigiriya. It would also easily be accessible from Dambulla or Polonnaruwa.
I went for the 2 hours before sunset, and as you can see from the video there were a lot of Jeeps at that time. You could try to go earlier but then you're in the baking sun for 2 hours.
I paid 3,500 LKR ($19.95 USD / /£15.40) for the Jeep, negotiating down from 5,000 by talking to Jeep drivers directly.
Entrance fees to the park are as follows (for foreigners, much cheaper for locals):
Adult: $15 USD
Child: $8 USD
Jeep: 250 LKR
Service Charge (one charge per vehicle, not per person): $8 USD
Value Added Tax: 15%
Total cost for me as a single person with Jeep and driver was 4,980 LKR ($28.39 USD / £21.91 GBP)

Things to do in Sri Lanka - Minneriya National Park | Sigiriya Lion Rock
Our first stop during our Sri Lanka Holidays 2017 was at Sigiriya Lion Rock, Minneriya National Park, and Dambulla Cave Temple.
Few of the top places to visit in Sri Lanka for sure. While other places like Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has elephants i thought Minneriya was the best to watch these gigantic animals in their natural habitat.

The first part of our recent (Oct 2018) trip to Sri Lanka.
We travelled by train and bus to Dambulla. It was enjoyable and cheap but we did stand for a couple of hours. In Dambulla we stayed at the Sevonrich Holiday Resort - the boss of this place had a real business mind but it was clear he prided himself on giving the best guest experience and keeping his guests happy. We ate at the hotel, loved our little log cabin style room and booked our tours with him. We felt that we got excellent value for money and a stress free trip with him organising everything for us.
