Wow! Airlines Apple Valley Minnesota Travel Guide Short
We made this video for the Wow! Airlines Summer Internship.
It gives a brief overview of some of the cool things in Apple Valley Minnesota.
Both Amy and I are students at the University of Minnesota - Duluth and were not able to start filming these shots until Wednesday May 2nd, the kicker is that we had a flight to Amsterdam leaving on Friday May 4th, so we really only had about two days to do the filming.
We are now currently in Vaxjo, Sweden (A sister city to Duluth Minnesota) uploading the edited video from a hotel lobby. :D
Some of the things you can see in the video are the transit system in Apple Valley (MVTA) and the Mall of America (Although not actually in Apple Valley we feel that you can't come to the south Metro and not visit M.O.A.), it also features the Minnesota Zoo which is home to hundreds of unique animals and right on the northern border of Apple Valley.
The video closes on several of our favorite places to eat from several different styles, including Sweet Treasures which some people may know from when they won Cake Wars in 2016.

Research Study Reveals Dolphins in U.S. Aquariums and Zoos Live As Long As or Longer Than Dolphins in the Wild
Grassy Key… Bottlenose dolphins living in United States marine mammal facilities live as long as, or longer than, dolphins in the wild according to a new research study published today in the journal Marine Mammal Science. (K. Jaakkola/K. Willis: How long do dolphins live? Survival rates and life expectancies for bottlenose dolphins in zoological facilities vs. wild populations. Marine Mammal Science 2019; DOI: 10.1111/mms.12601.) Analyzing close to 40 years of data from a U.S. government source called the Marine Mammal Inventory Report (MMIR), researchers determined that the current median life expectancy of bottlenose dolphins in U.S. facilities is 29.2 years. The study also compared the MMIR data with previous studies of three different wild populations of dolphins. In each comparison, the average life expectancy of dolphins in facilities was shown to be equal to or greater than that of dolphins in the wild.
Dr. Kelly Jaakkola of Dolphin Research Center, and Kevin Willis of The Minnesota Zoo, co-authored the peer-reviewed study. “Survival rates and life expectancies are indicators of overall health and well-being,” explained Dr. Jaakkola. “Critics of zoos and aquariums will frequently claim that dolphins in facilities don’t live as long as dolphins in the wild, in an attempt to influence public opinion and even proposed legislation. This study shows that that claim is just not true.”
To determine the median life expectancy of dolphins in U.S. facilities, Jaakkola and Willis divided the MMIR data into four time periods of about ten years each, and applied the Kaplan-Meier Survival Analysis to the data. This enabled them to calculate annual survival rate and median life expectancy over historical time. Life expectancy is the average number of years that animals in a population are expected to live, while life span identifies the maximum number of years that animals in a population can live. “In humans, for example, the maximum lifespan so far is about 122 years, whereas average life expectancy worldwide is about 72 years,” said Jaakkola.
The last scientific paper to analyze survival of dolphins in marine mammal facilities used data that are now more than 25 years old. “Even back then, their life expectancy was increasing,” Jaakkola continued. “We thought it was important to do a new study to update those results – to see if dolphin life expectancy had continued to increase, and to compare the results to wild populations.”
For complete data sets like the MMIR, a survival analysis like the Kaplan-Meier is the best mathematical approach. Unfortunately, due to the more limited observations inherent in studies of wild populations, no wild study to date has been able to use this type of analysis. Instead, previous studies used different analyses to study the wild dolphin populations of three different areas: the Indian River Lagoon System, FL (1978-1997); Mississippi Sound Region (1986-2003); Sarasota Bay, FL (1980-1987). For an accurate comparison to these studies, the Jaakkola/Willis study used the same analysis method on the MMIR data that was used for each of the different wild populations. In every case, the median life expectancy of dolphins living in U.S. facilities today was found to be as long or longer than their wild counterparts.

Omnibus Agriculture, Environment Bills Head to Conference Committee
The Senate advanced two omnibus spending bills Tuesday, April 23, which marked the beginning of their debate on state spending and taxation measures.
One of the bills, SF 2314, sponsored by Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen funds environment and natural resource programs and efforts. According to Ingebrigtsen, the measure supports clean water efforts, creates a research center on chronic wasting disease, and allows two-line fishing in Minnesota lakes. To fish the additional line, anglers would pay $5 dollars, and the money would be directed to improve the stocking of walleye. The bill also provides funding for Minnesota parks to ensure that all 87 parks remain open. It also increases funding to combat the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species by improving detection efforts.
A considerable amount of Senate floor debate on the issue focused on an amendment offered by Senator Gregory Clausen, DFL-Apple Valley, to remove free holiday admission to the Minnesota Zoo on some holidays. Clausen said that the decision to open the zoo gates would best be a decision for the zoo administrators. Senator Justin Eichorn, R-Hibbing, originally sponsored the provision, and argued that the Minnesota Zoo has become too expensive for some families and should be available free on dates because it receives state support.
The omnibus agriculture bill, SF 2226, sponsored by Senator Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake, promotes modernization of farm technologies, funds soybean research and marketing, expands rural broadband, encourages modular housing construction and funds mental health services for Minnesota farmers and their families.
The bills will be reconciled with the House funding proposals in conference committee.

Lions rule the African savanna in The Lion King, which welcomes Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story) as future king Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Dreamgirls, Lemonade visual album) as Simba’s friend-turned-love interest Nala, and James Earl Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Field of Dreams) as Simba’s wise and loving father, Mufasa, reprising his iconic performance from Disney’s 1994 animated classic. Chiwetel Ejiofor (Twelve Years a Slave, Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange) was called on to portray Simba’s villainous uncle Scar, and Alfre Woodard (Juanita, Marvel’s Luke Cage) portrays Simba’s no-nonsense mother, Sarabi. JD McCrary (OWN’s Tyler Perry’s The Paynes, Apple’s Vital Signs) fills the shoes of Young Simba, a confident cub who can’t wait to be king, and Shahadi Wright Joseph (NBC’s Hairspray Live, Broadway’s The Lion King) brings tough cub Young Nala to life.
Every kingdom comes with a trustworthy advisor or two. John Kani (Coriolanus, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War) was cast as the wise baboon Rafiki, and John Oliver (HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) was tapped as hornbill Zazu, Mufasa’s loyal confidant. When Simba goes into exile, he relies on two newfound friends—Seth Rogen (Sausage Party, Neighbors) lends his comedic chops to naïve warthog Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, FX’s American Horror Story) joins the cast as know-it-all meerkat Timon.
From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, “The Lion King” roars into cinemas Summer 2019.
Coyote stalks and starts going in for attack on elderly lady and dog
Coyote stalks elderly lady and small dog in city. Caught on tape. Had to stop filming because I thought the coyote was going to attack the lady but she started yelling and waving the stick. Coyote backed off. Location Burnaby B.C. Canada.
I tried to scare off this coyote for 3 weeks (before this video) and called the conservation officer but the coyote kept coming around stalking and growling at kids. Conservation officer told me he could not do anything unless the coyote bites someone. So I captured this footage to prove just how aggressive this coyote was. I did not want to wait until the coyote attack a child. Coyote disappeared after media pick up the story.
Keeping Safe Around Coyotes
If you live in an area that has a coyote population, these items can help you stay safe:
Personal alarm or whistle -- deters the animal and can get help for you if necessary.
Carrying a cell phone for emergencies is also helpful.
Carry a flashlight and an umbrella, both are known to deter coyotes from approaching you (open and close the umbrella and shine the light at them)
Avoid letting your pet off leash to roam freely while you walk. Keep your pet leashed.
Avoid walking during heightened coyote activity times, dusk and dawn.
If you are approached, stretch out your arms and legs to make yourself appear large and make noise. Stay calm. Never run.
