Minnetonka Cave ~ Southern Idaho, USA
Minnetonka Cave, in beautiful St. Charles Canyon northwest of Bear Lake, offers a half-mile of fascinating stalactites, stalagmites, and banded travertine in nine rooms. From mid-June until Labor Day, over 20,000 people visit the Cave and take the guided tours. The cave stays a brisk 40 degrees all year so bring your jacket! Minnetonka is one of two caverns administered by the Forest Service. Within St. Charles Canyon are campgrounds and a large group use areas with fishing and hiking nearby. Keep an eye out for resident wildlife such as moose and deer.

Visit the Minnetonka Cave on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest
Minnetonka Cave is located on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and is one of only two “show” caves on National Forest lands. The Cave is open for tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The tours take approximately an hour with tour guides mixing science and fantasy while describing the many rooms filled with stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone, and cave ‘bacon’. Visitors also get to experience total darkness while at the deepest point of the tour. The cave serves as a hibernaculum for 5 species of bat, one of which is the Townsend Big-eared bat. Filmed and edited by Charity Parks.

Family friendly Paris Ice Caves near Bear Lake
No. 53
Music by Funkmammoth
In this video, my family and I explore the Ice Caves in Paris, Idaho. Paris is located twenty miles north of Garden City, Utah. Both cities are near Bear Lake. The canyon above Paris offers space for hiking, camping, riding ATVs, and shooting guns. Activities like those are common in the Western United States.
The Ice cave is located around 10 miles up the canyon on a dirt road. The opening of the cave is right next to the road. Our trip took place at the end of July. The road was good enough for our minivan to make it up. Earlier in the year, it wouldn’t have been.
Even with all the heat, the Ice Cave still had plenty of ice. It gets its name because formations of ice can be found inside the cave throughout entire year, even in summer. The cave is made from limestone. Water runs off from the surrounding hills in the winter and creates the ice formations. The shade in the cave keeps the ice from melting completely. There is a man-made wooden path that leads into the cave, providing easy access to everyone.
Caves are common in that mountain area. There is even a large cave within 30 miles with large rock formations that offers tours. It is called Minnetonka Cave. Also, my cave videos earlier in the summer were filmed on the same mountain range.
Many caves occur in limestone because “Rainwater picks up carbon dioxide from the air and as it percolates through the soil, which turns into a weak acid. This slowly dissolves out the limestone along the joints, bedding planes and fractures, some of which become enlarged enough to form caves.”
The Ice Cave is fun because it is relatively safe, easy to get to, and anyone can experience. My nieces and nephew had a blast and didn’t require an extortionate amount of supervision. In the words of my niece, I give it thirty-five sixty stars.

Shoshone Ice Cave, part 2, 4k
This is Shoshone Ice Cave near Shoshone, Idaho. This cave has guided tours only, but I managed to be the only tourist in this group. At 0:45 I'm inside the cave. Notice like many other tourist caves it has lighting installed. At 1:23 the left wall sparkles. At 4:34 there's a weird circle in the ice. The guide says it might be a methane bubble. Can anyone confirm or deny? At 7:13 are some formations. These are real, but moved from another cave.

RetireTrip Bear Lake Utah/Idaho, Montpelier Idaho, Lava Hot Springs
The leg of our retirement trip from Capitol Reef to Lava Hot Springs, with a so-so KOA at Orem, Utah, had us getting off i15 via scenic Highway 89. This Highway hugs the Logan river through a fairly narrow canyon. We climbed to around 9,000 ft elevation and had panoramic views of big Bear Lake with Mountain ranges framing our view. This is an enormous lake with half of it in Utah, and the top half in Idaho. We descended to its shore and hugged it north to the historic town of Montpelier. The Museum covers the Trail made by the western wagon trailers. We then continued north until discovering a great KOA by the river in the town of Lava Hot Springs. We did some hiking into town where they make money off the hot 102 degree water coming off the side of the mountain. There are three cascading pools each at different degrees all uncontrolled. Pretty nice. We are looking forward to exploring Mesa Falls tomorrow with vies of the Tetons from the western side.
