Bruges Minnewater Park
For most visitors the Minnewater and its lovely park are the entrance to the beautiful city of Bruges. The Minnewater is a canalized lake. From the bridge (1740) one can already enjoy a nice panoramic view over the town. Because of the idyllic surroundings it is mostly referred to as 'the lake of Love', the Dutch word 'Minne' meaning 'love'.
Actually, the origins of the lake are less romantic. It was here that the coastal river 'Reie' entered the city. The river was later canalized and made to continue until the center of town. It is not sure where the name 'Minnewater' comes from. An explanation could be 'water van het gemeen', which could be translated as the 'common water'. The lake was used as a water reservoir, to keep the water of the canals at a constant level. Next to the lake is the Minnewater park, where sometimes in the summertime (rock) concerts are organized.

One of the symbols of Bruges is the swan. There are always plenty of them on the 'Minnewater'. There exists a nice legend about the swans of Bruges. In 1488 the people of Bruges had executed one of the town administrators belonging to the court of Maximilian of Austria, husband and successor of duchess Mary of Burgundy. The town administrator was called 'Pieter Lanchals', a name which means ' long neck'. The Lanchals family coat of arms featured a white swan. Legend has it that Maximilian punished Bruges by obliging the population to keep swans on their lakes and canals till eternity. Most of these legends and romantic interpretations come from the 19th century. Believe them or not : the beautiful 'Minnewater' deserves them.

Bruges Beginhof
In 1937 the beguinage became a monastery for the Benedictine sisters who still live here now.
The Beguinage is a group of houses around a little garden covered with large poplar trees. It was here that during the last seven centuries lived the beguines of Bruges.
Just behind the Minnewater lies the Beguinage 'De Wijngaard' (= the Vineyard). It is one of those typical areas in Bruges where one can find more peace and quiet than in the sometimes busy and overcrowded streets of the town center.
The Beguinage of Bruges was founded in 1245 by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinopel, daughter of Count Baldwin who conquered Constantinopel (now Istambul) during the crusades. In 1299, Philip the beautiful of France, placed the Beguinage under his own rule, thereby withdrawing it from the influence of the town magistrate.Visitors enter the place via a bridge over the canal. The entrance gate bears the date 1776. A lot of houses, however, are much older than that. Most date from the 17th and 18th century. Some houses were built in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. In the southern part is a little dead end street where still some houses of the 15th-16th century can be found. The largest and most impressive house is situated in the left corner behind the garden. It was here that the 'grootjuffrouw', or 'grand-dame' lived. It was she who ruled over the beguinage. The original church of the 13th century was destroyed by a fire in 1584. It was rebuild in 1609 and later again renovated in late baroque style.

Begijnenhuisje Brugge/Bruges Beguinale house

Belgium: The Beguinage and Almshouses in Bruges
The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved beguinage in Bruges.
The Begijnhof is a haven of peace and tranquility . It was founded in 1245 by Margaret of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders, and is located just beside the Minnewaterpark . The Beguinage is characterized by the small white houses in the middle of the large garden with beautiful trees and flowers .
There are no more Beguines any more , but since 1927, a community of a Benedictine monastery, founded by Canon Hoornaert lives here. In that year the houses to the west were transformed and developed into the Monasterium Vineyard, a priory of Benedictine parish nuns .
Other important religious sites in the city include the numerous old almshouses.
Almshouses are charitable housing provided to enable people (typically elderly people who can no longer work to earn enough to pay rent) to live in a particular community. They are often targeted at the poor of a locality, at those from certain forms of previous employment, or their widows, and are generally maintained by a charity or the trustees of a bequest.
The Almshouses in Bruges belong to the Patrimony of the Public Social Welfare Centre ( Openbaar Centrum voor Maatschappelijk Welzijn - OCMW) and to provide habitation , to less well-off elderly.

The Begijnhof and the Meulenaere Hospice in Bruges - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
Our walk to Begijnhof starts at Walplein Square. This square and the surrounding area in the southern Old Town of Bruges offers a variety of restaurants, as well as Bruges oldest brewery De Halve Maan. In good weather, you find plenty of outdoor seating areas. A sculpture in honor of the coachmen decorates the square. Created in 1982 by Belgian sculptor Jef Claerhout, the sculpture shows Zeus, Leda, and Prometheus on winged Pegasus.
Through the Wijngaardstraat we reach the Wijngaardplein, the meadow with the swans we already know from the boat tour. Over a small bridge and an archway, we reach the Beguinage.
The Beguinage in Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It used to be a medieval women's shelter where single women found refuge.
A church and a large number of small houses for the Beguines to live are lined up around a courtyard. Although the Beguines lived without confession, their life turned out to be an intermediate stage between religious life and lay state.
The Beginenhof in Bruges, Princely Beginenhof Ten Wijngaarde, was founded in the 13th century and is now inhabited and managed by Benedictine nuns. We are lucky, that, at this time of the year, countless daffodils bloom in the inner courtyard.
We leave the Beguinage at the southern exit and visit the Minnewaterpark, an oasis of peace in the town, which is strongly influenced by tourism. The Minnewater used to be a mooring for river ships and trek boats, a kind of water shuttle between Bruges and Ghent.
The Kasteel Minnewater offers a beautiful guest garden directly on the water, which allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Back at the Katelijnestraat, we turn into the Nieuwe Gentweg and arrive at the Godshuis de Meulenaere, the Meulenaere Hospice.
In Bruges, rich people or guilds founded 46 of these almshouses in the 14th century. Around an inner courtyard, you find many small houses, that served as homes for the poor or old needy people. Still, 43 almshouses serve social objectives.

Visit Brugge and Boat Ride on The Lake of Love (Minnewater), BELGIUM

By the charming squares, typical narrow streets and medieval houses, Bruges is one of the most beautiful destinations in Europe. A beautiful narrow canal winding as a labyrinth across the old city center, giving the impression of Brugue as a romantic and classic city.
There are lots of things to see and do in Brugge, from enjoying culinary delights such as chocolate and waffles, shopping for souvenirs at the Tin Tin shop, and the most exciting ones are boating on the canals and visiting the Lake of Love (Minnewater) that looks like a fairyland. This is the most beautiful way to enjoy the medieval streets that are the center of world history (UNESCO).
Behind of that The beautiful brugge have a heartwarming love story legend. Ones upon the times, there lived a young and beautiful girl named Minna. Minna fell in love with a young man named Stromberg, a warrior from a different tribe. But what power did his father disagree with his love and intend to marry her to a man of his own choice. Minna was very sad and ran away. She ran and ran all the way into the forest until she can not anymore. When the beloved young man, Stromberg, finally found her, she breathed her last in his arms from exhaustion. The lake was then named Minna or Minnewater, and the bridge on the lake was considered a bridge of love or Lovers Bridge, to remind them.
