SAKURA AND FESTIVAL MINO JAPAN
Historic town with deep roots and a thriving Japanese paper industry.
Mino City is located in southwestern Gifu Prefecture. It has been known for centuries as a production center for traditional Japanese paper. In fact, Mino Japanese paper is regarded as some of the best for its high-quality.
The history of Mino Japanese paper goes back as far as the 8th century. A major portion of the types of Japanese paper donated to the Shosoin Repository in Nara are Mino Japanese paper. The paper industry thrived in Mino due to the availability of large quantities of paper mulberry and the abundant and clear waters of the Nagara and Itadori Rivers. The tradition of paper-making is alive and well in the city today. Paper artisans make each piece by hand using traditional techniques that give the paper its subtle texture- quite different to that of Western paper. The Mino Washi Museum is a popular spot where visitors can experience paper-making. Using authentic tools and natural materials, you can try making your own original Mino Japanese paper. For two days every October, the city hosts the Mino Washi Akari ART Exhibition, where participants display their creations in the Udatsu no Agaru Historic District.
The Udatsu no Agaru Historic District is so designated for its beautiful historic buildings. “Udatsu” is a constriction term and refers to the wall placed at both edges of the first-floor roof of a two-story house to prevent fire from spreading to neighboring houses. As they city became more and more prosperous, many people, including paper wholesalers, placed these eye-catching “udatsu” structures on their houses in order to boast their affluence. In the town of Mino, you can still see a number of these merchant houses with their detailed lattice work, which were built in the Edo Period.
Exploring Minoh Waterfall & Katsuō-ji Temple in Northern Osaka | Mino Park | Japan | Mr Agathon
A short detour to Minoh Falls while we were heading to Katsuō-ji Temple in Osaka.
We were invited by our good friend Ryubun Kojima, 2019 President of JCI Osaka and the newly Elected 2020 JCI World Executive Vice President.
Minoh Waterfall isn't a big waterfall but still beautiful. The hike is also very light, ideal for families & elderly. Surprisingly we met with a fellow JCI member who is a store owner in Mino Park. What a coincidence as one of his staff recognised my shirt with JCI logo on it.
It is great to be a jaycee, you have friends everywhere.
Then we head out to our main destination which is Katsuō-ji Temple. Upon arriving the Temple, through the scenic route, we were greeted warmly by the head monk ( Ryubun san). We were astonished at how beautiful the temple is, surrounded by mountains, trees and water. We were told that in autumn, the temple is one of the most visited place in Osaka due to its beautiful autumn colours. I cannot imagine how beautiful it is in autumn as it is already amazing in summer.
We had the opportunity to put our goals & prayers on the Daruma Dolls, had a brief history of the temple as well as why Katsuō-ji is one of the most respected temples in whole of Japan. Such an honour & uplifting experience.
Thank you JCI Osaka, Ryubun san, Akinobu san (JCI Osaka IA team) and our members from JCI Jayakarta who came and supported this friendship visit.
Enjoy the Video Guys!!
Mino, Gifu file004
Here lies a harbor town on the Nagara River that was traversed by merchants during the Edo Period. The rows of buildings include wholesale merchants of Mino washi, guesthouses, and sake brewing merchants.
…however, that is a tale of the long-gone Edo Period.
The historical townscape that appears before your eyes during a visit to Mino remains unchanged since ancient times.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Minoo Fall〜
Minoh Falls (sometimes spelled as Mino or Minoo) is a main natural attraction within the mountains of Minoh Park which is open to the public free of charge. It is 33 meters high with a 5 meter width and falls right before your eyes. Dating back a 1300 years in the Asuka Era (592~710), it was written in historical documents that En-No-Gyouja performed meditation under the Falls.
The Minoh Park is one of Japan’s oldest National Parks located in Minoh city which is north of Osaka city. You could reach there in 30 minutes by using a train from Umeda in central Osaka. The park houses 980 different plant habitations of lush green forest, 3000 insect species with an insect museum all along a picturesque hiking path.
The hiking path to Minoh Waterfall starts with a short walk North of Minoh Station. It takes about 45 minutes or approxiamately 3 km to walk up along the Minoh river until you reach the Minoh Falls.
The first part of the walk begins by passing through many shops selling Momiji tempura which are fried Japanese maple leaf sweets original to this place. Along the way you will pass by Ryuanji Temple with it’s pretty red bridge.
The walk up to Minoh Falls are worth a visit any time of year, surrounded with its refreshing green forest, and one of the best seasons is in late Autumn when you can see the beautiful Japanese red maples.

Cavernous Surge Tank Protects Tokyo From Floods
A massive underground surge tank protects Tokyo from the yearly onslaughts of typhoons and storms, many similar in force to Hurricane Sandy.
Full Story:
In the low-lying suburbs of Tokyo, an underground pump station protects the capital from flooding.
Japan's land ministry says it is the world's current largest solution to flooding.
Here is a pump station for the Tokyo Metropolitan Floodway, the end point of a 3.7 mile (6 kilometer) long network of tunnels, capable of channeling away storm waters at the rate of 5 Olympic-size swimming pools every minute.
The aim is to prevent scenes like those in New York this week, when Hurricane Sandy caused widespread flooding across parts of the city.
A study of several towns in Tokyo's low-lying northern suburbs before and after the water system was completed in 2006, shows positive results.
[Takashi Komiyama, Pump Station Chief]:
The floodway is directly protecting people from floods, the results are there. The damage is down by about two-thirds, in terms of both the number of homes that get flooded and the areas that are impacted.
The jewel of the system is a cavernous surge tank measuring 580 feet (177 meters) long, 256 feet (78 meters) wide and 59 feet (18 meters) high.
As smaller rivers rise during typhoons, the water is diverted into the tank through 3.9 miles (6.3 kilometres) of tunnels at a maximum rate of 260 cubic yards (200 cubic meters) every second.
From there, the water is slowly pumped into the Edo River, a waterway large enough to handle the extra volume.
With a price tag of about U.S. $2.9 billion (230 billion yen) the system wasn't cheap, but Koriyama says the United States should keep it in mind—if there's space.
[Takashi Komiyama, Pump Station Chief]:
The best idea for town planning is of course to make sure your river routes are in the right place and on the right ground. But for areas that haven't been able to do that, well, new underground floodways would work well to stop flooding. But in the case of New York, all the space underground has been used up for development, and I think it would probably be difficult to put in floodways.
Every year, Tokyo is swept by typhoons and storms, many similar in force to Hurricane Sandy.
In 1991, a typhoon swamped nearly 24,710 acres (10,000 hectares) of land and flooded more than 30,000 homes in the low-lying areas around Tokyo's northern fringes, according to Land Ministry figures.
Construction of the floodway began 2 years later and was fully completed by 2006.

They Went There - Japan
They Went There continues their journey around the world!

Nine months, eleven countries and thirty flights later we landed in Japan, our final and most anticipated stop in Asia. We had been looking forward to this part of the trip for over four years when Rach went there with her school to exhibit her art. From that point on she would’nt stop talking about how amazing Japan is and now we were here to experience it together. We had our route planned from Tokyo to Okinawa and everywhere in between.
We started in Tokyo, exploring the sleepless city districts of Shinjuku, Harajuku, and Shibuya. We ventured out further for day trips to Yokohama and the surrounding area to see the fish market and the largest China town in all of Japan. There is enough happening in Tokyo to keep you occupied for months, but we had to ration our time as we had so much more to see.
As we made our way south through the country, we stopped in Osaka and had the best Sukiyaki you could ever imagine, we saw Nara and whispered our wishes to the deer and then stopped in Kyoto to spend time visiting their vast array of temples.
Okinawa was a week of sun and sand and relaxing on the beach which couldn’t have been a more welcome reprieve from the endless kilometres of walking that we were used to. The island life is definitely nice but we were itching to see more of the country before the third day had passed.
We were in Kobe eating their famous cuts of beef before we knew it. Our days were filled snacking on beautiful cakes and drinking coffee in-between red meat meals.
Hiroshima was a sobering trip into the past as we visited monuments and the Peace Memorial Museum. It is a beautiful city that has rebuilt itself despite the tragic past, with great walking streets full of friendly people, it is one place I look forward to coming back to.
Mt. Fuji and Hakone were our last two stops and we kept hearing how lucky we were that we showed up when we did. For two weeks before our arrival they had only known rain and clouds but we showed up and so did the sun. The clouds parted for us and revealed the majestic mount Fuji day and night.
Exploring Japan with Rach, my dad and step brother Cam was an epic month filled with history, culture, laughter and love. We can’t wait to come back and explore more of this amazing country.
