Jim Cheshire at Minocqua Winter Park
Minocqua Winter Park
In the Northwoods, we have a tremendous number of winter events, but a favorite destination that's open all season is the exceptional Minocqua Winter Park. It is truly a world class spot that makes winter a joy rather than something to endure.
Minocqua Winter Park's vision is Living our love of winter sports - sharing that love with the next generation. It certainly brings that vision to life. You'll find over 50 miles of trails groomed with state of the art equipment. You can snowshoe or cross country ski through 6,500 acres of gorgeous Northwoods wilderness. Other winter activities include snow tubing, ice skating on their rink, and, as Jim Cheshire points out in the video even skijoring! (For the curious, skijoring is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by--in this case--a dog!).
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Minocqua (#808)
[Original Airdate: February 21, 2019]
Most people go to Minocqua to play in the north woods of Wisconsin – and there is no finer playground. If you are thinking about cabins, lakes, waterski shows and supper clubs, then you are right on the money. But after this half hour, you’ll also think of jerky, popcorn, zoo safaris and vitamins – no kidding! Hopefully you’ll also gain an understanding of its true culture, one that is rich with Ojibwe and founding family histories. The word “eclectic” comes to mind. But “rejuvenating” may be the best description of Minocqua.

North End of US 51, Southbound through Rainy Wisconsin
Okay, listen. I know this video is very rainy. It was a miserable drive. But some of the towns along the way were quite nice. So, enjoy this look at US 51 southbound, from its northern terminus near Ironwood, Michigan to Mercer, Woodruff, Minocqua, and Merrill, Wisconsin. Oh, and you might also enjoy the rear-view version, which has fewer raindrops on the lens.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in October 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Engelwood Ski Area, Osceola WI
Engelwood Ski Area outside of Osceola, Wisconsin operated from the 1950s to the late 60's, and now is part of the Standing Cedars Land Conservancy. With expansive, and challenging terrain, it must have been a gem to ski in its heyday. Remnants of the old ski area rope tows are still in abundance throughout the property even as the forest slowly reclaims the runs.
