Travel Vlog l Myanmar-Yangon l
Almost exactly a year ago, I took a trip to Myanmar and it was amazing. This is just one of the three places, I visited while there. A highly recommended place to go if you're visiting southeast Asia. The Pagodas are exquisite.
Exchanging Money in Myanmar
I think one of the hot topics with anyone interested in traveling to Myanmar is money.
No, sorry she leaned, sliding my hundred dollar back to me with a polite smile. It is marked.
I didn't know what she meant. I had tried to get the freshest and newest looking dollars possible. She pointed to a marking on the back of the bill. There it was. Someone had discretely stamped it as some type of authorization, similar to the way American sales people like to hold up a fresh bill to the light to examine it's authenticity before striping it with a highlighter to see if affects counterfeit paint.
Who turns away a hundred dollar bill?
I'm sure it's heartbreaking on both ends.
Myanmar's corrupt currency history
Although I'd heard about U.S. bills being rejected for slight misdemeanors, it still seemed kinda nutty that a developing country would reject a hundred dollar bill. At the time, I didn't know their history with currency.
In earlier days, the government used to mess with the people. They'd change the currency on them. If they felt too many people were getting rich, they'd announce that the currencies of the highest denomination — like the hundred dollar bill-- would be taken out of circulation. Hundred dollar bills lost their value. All that money was lost.
The government would also change their own currency denominations based on whim, like a leader's lucky number. So eventually that the Burmese realized the one currency whose value couldn't easily be changed on whim was the American dollar.
Distrusting of the government and banks, many Burmese withdrew their money and started keeping their American dollars in large books, to keep their dollars pressed, safe and pristine.
Today, many Burmese still prefer to safeguard their money in their homes.

President Obama's Trip to Burma (Myanmar): Aung San Suu Kyi, University of Yangon (2012)
The Obama administration initially continued longstanding American reticence in dealing with Burma after taking over in January 2009, preferring to prioritize broader security threats like Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Susan E. Rice, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, called the junta government's hold over Myanmar, known in the West as Burma, one of the most intractable challenges for the global community. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed that the Obama administration was looking at what steps we might take that might influence the current Burmese government and...looking for ways that we could more effectively help the Burmese people, though she echoed Rice's pessimism in noting the junta's historical isolationism and disregard for economic sanctions.
At the urging of Aung San Suu Kyi and the US's East Asian partners, the US held the first formal meetings with the junta in late in 2009.
In November 2011, Obama spoke with Aung San Suu Kyi on the phone where they agreed to a visit by Secretary of State Clinton to Burma. Obama met with Burmese President Thein Sein at the Sixth East Asia Summit. Clinton made a two-day visit from December 1, 2011. Barack Obama visited Burma on November 18, 2012, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to do so. Obama also visited Aung San Suu Kyi in her home.
Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC (born 19 June 1945) is a Burmese opposition politician and chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59% of the national votes and 81% (392 of 485) of the seats in Parliament. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her most recent release on 13 November 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners.
Suu Kyi received the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the government of India and the International Simón Bolívar Prize from the government of Venezuela. In 2007, the Government of Canada made her an honorary citizen of that country; at the time, she was one of only four people ever to receive the honour. In 2011, she was awarded the Wallenberg Medal. On 19 September 2012, Aung San Suu Kyi was also presented with the Congressional Gold Medal, which is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
On 1 April 2012, her party, the National League for Democracy, announced that she was elected to the Pyithu Hluttaw, the lower house of the Burmese parliament, representing the constituency of Kawhmu; her party also won 43 of the 45 vacant seats in the lower house. The election results were confirmed by the official electoral commission the following day.
Suu Kyi is the third child and only daughter of Aung San, considered to be the father of modern-day Burma.

More modes of transportation to be launched next month to help ease traffic congestions in Yangon
Traffic congestion in Yangon has brought concerns among commuters. Authorities are finding out ways to ease this by providing infrastructure like roads and bridges, parking spaces, and even traffic lights. In addition to those, a new mode of transportation will be launched next month.

Circular Train in Yangon (No longer in service) Instead, get the train to Insein October 2019
We heard so much about the circular train ride in Yangon that we decided to hop on it. When you arrive at the Yangon Central Station in Mingala Taungnyunt, head straight for platform 6 as the circular train from platform 7 is no longer in operation due to rail works. Instead, hop on the train to Insein, which costs 10p for a return journey. The train ride is approximately 45 minutes one way which makes several stops before arriving at Insein. Theres not much to do in Insein as we found out. We walked around for an hour, bought some chickpea bhajyas and headed back to Yangon. Locals will sell everything on the train, from reading glasses and newspapers to fruit and veg to beetle leaf pan (the stuff they eat, stuffed with chewing tabacco which makes their teeth go red/black). We had an awesome time just people watching and enjoying the views from this short train journey. Although the circular trian doesn't operate, the trip to Insein is still worth the 10p!

An Ancient Monastery in Myanmar, Pakhangyi Monastery
Pakhangyi Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located at Pakhangyi village of Yesagyo Township under Magway Region in Myanmar. This ancient monastery built over 150 years ago during the Konbaung era and is the largest extant Konbaung era wooden monastery in the country. All that remains of the monastery today are a few wooden posts and some concrete steps. In 1996, the Burmese government submitted the monastery, along with other exemplars from the Konbaung dynasty for inclusion into the World Heritage List. According to monastic records, the monastery's construction was ordered by King Mindon Min and completed by court ministers and sawbwas on 16 acres of land. The Pandu Sayadaw taught Buddhist literature to more than 400 monks at the monastery about 150 years ago. It took seven years for 100 carpenters to complete the wooden building using traditional Myanmar architectural techniques and most notably the inclusion of eight-step stairways.
