The Wine Down - Tasting Temecula with David Vergari and Guest-Host, Wes Hagen
EPISODE SYNOPSIS:
With Sonja out of town, the host seat gets filled by the brilliant winemaker and friend of the show, Wes Hagen of Clos Pepe, who has invited David Vergari of Vergari Wines and Thornton Wine to discuss the bubbling scene in Temecula.
The talk goes into the reasons for the region's surprising excellence--from good soil to passionate growers, and we taste several varietals of David's work. Along the way, we wonder where Temecula is going with their wine, and learn about the roots of the current crop. It's a key show about a region that is coming up in the wine world. Cheers!
GUEST BIO:
David Vergari founded Vergari Wines in 2003, producing Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards that are exclusively suited to those varietals. David studied Enology and Viticulture at UC Davis, interned at Sonoma-Cutrer and The Hess Collection in Napa Valley, and worked abroad at Coldstream Hills in Australia and Covisa in Spain. Landing back in California, David worked his way up to Research Enologist at Joseph Phelps Vineyard before moving to Rutz Cellars in the Russian River Valley, where he not only became the winemaker, but honed his skills and appreciation for Pinot Noir. Then, after four years as Head Winemaker at Maddalena Vineyards, David decided to launch his own label, Vergari Wines.
In his spare time, David acts as a consulting winemaker and teaches extension wine courses at UC Irvine. David ascribes his lifelong interest in wine at least in part to his Italian ancestry. His first memory of wine goes back to when he was five years old, in his great-uncle's cellar in San Francisco tasting Dago Red - cut with water, of course! For a while in his twenties he worked as a financial analyst, but winemaking was in his blood, and inevitably he decided to change careers and follow his passion.

Loren Scott as Lenny Ganz in Rumors
Me (Loren Scott) as Lenny Ganz in the famous monologue near the end of Neil Simon's Rumors, as performed by the Temecula Valley Players (Temecula, CA - Feb 2010).
In this scene, Lenny is impersonating the home owner, Charlie Brock, who has somehow shot himself in the ear and is passed out on the bed. His wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found. Neighbors who heard the gunshots have called the police.
Lenny and the other guests who have arrived for a dinner party have no clue what really happened. Lenny has to make up a story on the fly to convince the police that everything is okay.
The way I chose to portray Lenny in this scene was to start the made up story slowly and with deliberate pauses, umms, and stutters -- as if he were really making this up as he went along, and not doing it too well -- at first. Then, as the lie picks up steam and Lenny gains confidence, I pick up the pace, drop the pauses and stutters, and rip through the last part.
I hope you enjoy watching this half as much as I enjoyed performing the role.

Rebel Yell at Temecula Wine & Beer Garden
Pandora's Rock played this song Live with Tim Buxton featured on lead vocals and bass. Rebel Yell is the first song on the Billy Idol album of the same name. When first released in 1983, it charted outside the UK Top 40, but a re-issue in 1985 reached #6. It did not fare as well in the US, only reaching #46. The song was named the 79th best hard rock song of all time by VH1. At a televised performance of VH1 Storytellers Billy Idol said that he had attended an event where Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones were taking swigs of a Rebel Yell bottle of bourbon whiskey. He didn't know the brand, but he liked the name and decided to write a Rebel Yell song. The song was co-written by guitarist Steve Stevens. The instrumental introduction, which sounds like a combination of electric guitar and electronic keyboard, is performed by Stevens on guitar alone, who intended it to sound this way. Stevens states that he was inspired by acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke's style.
