Japan: Where Gods Aren't Gods and Worshipers Aren't Religious (Shinto Explained)
Have you ever wondered about all the gates (torii) you see around Japan? They are entrances to the sacred ground of Shinto shrines (jinja). While some might see Japan's traditional practices of Shinto as a religion, and their various kami as gods, it's not quite as simple as that.
Special thanks to David Chart for explaining the ins and outs of Shinto. Find out more about Shinto on his blog at and support his writing on Patreon at
Also a big thanks to Yushima Tenjin and Shirahata-san for letting us film on their sacred grounds. As mentioned in the video, tourists snapshots at jinja are fine, but you should get permission to film within the sacred space if you'll be using for the commercial or YouTube purposes.
Lastly, thanks to my Patreon supporters who help me make videos like this. Become a patron yourself at

HAKONE hotspring Yuryo Onsen Yukata Fall Season GoPro Iphone Gimbal
After Tokyo, we went to Hakone for some hotsprings. We initially wanted to check out Tenzan onsen but during the trip our friend recommened Yuryo which is not far away from the Hakone Yumoto. Plus there is a free pick up shuttle that will take you to the onsen. We did the public bath so no camera or recording devices were allowed. The open air pools are surrounded by tasteful decor and greenery. It was raining that day so soaking in the pools while looking at the faraway foggy forest was so relaxing.

Kyoto and Osaka:

SAVING 10,000 - Winning a War on Suicide in Japan - 自殺者1万人を救う戦い - Japanese Documentary
Each year, close to 30,000 people commit suicide in Japan. Over the years, the Japanese government and corporations have tried various methods to lower the suicide rate but Japan continues to have one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
SAVING 10,000 is a documentary that takes a deeper look at the serious problem of suicide in Japan, its causes, its repercussions, and what people are trying to do about it.
SAVING 10,000 - 自殺者1万人を救う戦い Selected in Japan Times Top 10 Movies of 2013 - Nominated for 14 film festival awards - Screened at Japanese Parliament - Used in Government's 2013 Suicide Prevention Campaign - Grassroots screenings all around Japan. Over 50 media interviews done.
Official site is:
In a war on suicide, who is the enemy?
'Saving 10,000' is the story of an Irishman's personal passion to uncover the true causes of the high suicide rate in Japan. With the help of front-line experts and ordinary Japanese, many touched by the horror of suicide, the movie delivers practical proposals on how Japan can win a war on suicide. However with suicide such a taboo, the odds are nobody will listen. Or will they?
If you are suicidal, or know someone that is, please contact either Inochi no Denwa, or TELL -- Tokyo English Life Line, for support and recommendations on how to deal with it. Depression and suicide is a very serious issue, and should not be ignored. Please, seek help.
You can find the sites here:

Throughout the documentary interviews are conducted with various people connected to suicide, everything from authors, journalists, police, health care workers, and more. As we delve deeper into the reasons behind this phenomenon in Japan, we see that while it may be a complex topic, the reasons are often not hard to grasp. So why is no one doing anything? Well, people are, but is it enough?
The problem of suicide in Japan is big enough, that Wikipedia has an entire page dedicated to just that issue.
Suicide in Japan has become a significant national social issue. Japan has a relatively high suicide rate, but the number of suicides is declining and has been under 30,000 for 2 consecutive years. It is the leading cause of death in men aged 20--44.
Factors in suicide include unemployment, depression, and social pressures. In 2007, the National Police Agency revised the categorization of motives for suicide into a division of 50 reasons with up to three reasons listed for each suicide. Suicides traced to losing jobs surged 65.3 percent while those attributed to hardships in life increased 34.3 percent. Depression remained at the top of the list for the third year in a row, rising 7.1 percent from the previous year.
There has been a rapid increase in suicides since the 1990s. For example, 1998 saw a 34.7% increase over the previous year. This has prompted the Japanese government to react by increasing funding to treat the causes of suicide and those recovering from failed suicides.
You can read more at:
If you are interested in other documentaries about suicide in Japan, you can also have a look at the documentary posted here:
Secret Life of Japan
Journeyman Pictures, also has a good documentary on this issue. It focuses on the frightening concept of child suicide in Japan, often the result of bullying and the harsh discipline employed in Japanese schools. It's called Japan child suicide epidemic driven by school discipline and can be found here:
We thank you for watching this, and hope that you have learned more about these serious social issues in Japan. If you, or someone you know, is depressed or suicidal, please seek appropriate help before it's too late.
Suicide is never the answer.

This event was recorded at the American Center Japan in Tokyo on June 5, 2014. Takei was visiting Japan at the invitation of the United States Embassy and also spoke in Okinawa, Kyoto, and Sendai during his tour, which was funded by the U.S. Department of State.
Let's Play Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Kokoro (pt3) Volley Day (ENG Subtitles 18+)
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is a 2016 video game in the Dead or Alive series developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo as the second sequel to the beach volleyball spin-off title Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
It was released under two titles for the two different platforms, as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune for the PlayStation 4 and as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Venus for the PlayStation Vita.
The game was distributed exclusively in Asian territories, where it was released on March 24, 2016, although it does contain an English language option.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 retains the camera mode from the earlier installments of the DOAX series.
The game features multiple gameplay modes, which include minigames such as beach volleyball and butt battle.
Game modes include beach flag, in which characters will compete in a race to retrieve a flag, and rock climbing.
At night time you can participate in different casino games.
The feature which displays tan lines and swimsuit malfunctions is only available in the PlayStation 4 version.
In addition, there is a new suntanning system.
As the player unlocks new costumes for one character, the items will be also be available for use to all characters.
There are also new modes like Girl Mode, where the player can take direct control of the girl they have selected, and Owner Mode, where the player becomes an owner of another island.
The player is also able to initiate various activities with the girls, such as dating.
Limited release
DOAX3 was released exclusively to Asian markets, but following protests from fans, Hayashi said a version of the game adjusted for North America might come to the West if the demand is high enough.
However, on November 24, 2015, Team Ninja posted on the franchise's Facebook page stating that they will not release the game in Western territories.
The Asian version will include an English language option and is region-free on both systems.
Following the announcement not to release the game outside Asia, a public debate arose whether this was due to avoid criticism of the sexualized portrayal of women in the games, or the comparatively low US and European sales of the previous game in the Dead or Alive Xtreme series.
Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony, said in a statement; It's due to cultural differences.
The West has its own thinking about how to depict women in games media which is different from Japan […] Speaking personally, if it is a representation acceptable to the general people in Japan, I wouldn't be concerned about it in Japan. It's a difficult problem.

[ENGSUB] Tokyo Story (東京物語 )| 1953 | Ozu Yasujirō | 1080p Full Movie
Tokyo Story (東京物語) is a 1953 Japanese drama film directed by Yasujirō Ozu and starring Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama. It tells the story of an aging couple who travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The film contrasts the behavior of their children, who are too busy to pay them much attention, with that of their widowed daughter-in-law, who treats them with kindness.
Ozu and screenwriter Kōgo Noda wrote the script in 103 days, loosely basing it on the 1937 American film, Make Way for Tomorrow, directed by Leo McCarey. Noda suggested adapting the film, which Ozu had not yet seen. Ozu used many of the same cast and crew members that he had worked with for years. Released in Japan in 1953, it did not immediately gain international recognition and was considered too Japanese to be marketable by Japanese film exporters. It was screened in London in 1957 where it won the inaugural Sutherland Trophy the following year, and received praise from US film critics after a 1972 screening in New York City.
Tokyo Story is widely regarded as Ozu's masterpiece and is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made. In 2012, it was voted the best film of all time in a poll of film directors by Sight & Sound magazine.

Harold Jaffe: Anti-Twitter | Talks at Google
Harold Jaffe visits Google's San Francisco office to present his book Anti-Twitter. This event took place on February 19, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series.
For a recent interview, see:
These 50-word stories are based on found texts from mainstream news sources and other public sites. Jaffe sculpts them to reveal their inner core, all niceties stripped away. Now the true motives, fears and sins of our age are on display for all who care to see.
Amidst an internet-driven content boom, meaning has virtually disappeared. Anti-Twitters extreme brevity demonstrates by example that brief need not = dumbed-down. Though the stories describe a wide arc: high and pop culture, intimate and public, sordid and exalted, all subjects are equally laid bare by Jaffes incisive stratagems.
What Are They Saying About Anti-Twitter ?
The ephemeral world-wide chatter of Twitter is here bathed in Harold Jaffe's insidious acid, as another current language is accosted, insulted through example, and rendered absurd. Comic, at times frightening, pathetic, often ridiculous, these 150 Anti-Twitters stand against common currency of the form, become a cultural document of their own, no less than the hum of the word's turnings. Once again Jaffe proves himself a master of subversion.

2007 Peter Cook Interview
Miriam Lerner interviews Peter Cook, of the Flying Words duo. Peter Cook describes how he became deaf at age 3, the schools he attended (both Deaf oral schools and a private high school). In high school, Peter met Bernard Bragg at the 100th anniversary of the National Association of the Deaf in Ohio where he took a visual vernacular workshop. Peter selected NTID due to his interest in photography. NTID was a turning point in his life as he joined the theatre and participated in ‘The Tempest’ play. This experience exposed him to fluent Deaf signers and role models like Patrick Graybill. He became a B-A-D, or a ‘Born Again Deaf’ and took classes in translation with both Robert Panara and Patrick Graybill who emphasized different aspects. Panara transliterated English works like ‘Spoon River Anthology,’ and Graybill showed them ASL handshapes and rhythms. Cook loved watching Panara sign poetry, including ‘On His Deafness.’ He joined a performance group, ‘Heavy Maze’ and they would perform at The Cellar, a bar at RIT/NTID. This is how he met Jim Cohn, who complimented him on his poetry work and encouraged him to attend the 1984 Allen Ginsberg presentation with Robert Panara. That experience totally changed his life as Ginsberg opened his mind as to other possibilities of what poetry could be. The translation of ‘hydrogen jukebox’ by Graybill from the poem ‘Howl’ captivated him in its use of imagery. Unshackled by the confines of English, Cook used the visual vernacular (VV) using his body to become the screen. He showed the visual image on his body, incorporating different camera angles like close-ups, zooms, and various shots. After this, Jim Cohn gave him the book, ‘Bird Brain’ and encouraged him to perform out in the hearing community as well. The ‘Bird Brain Society’ was formed and they met in The Cellar. Another turning point occurred when Jim Cohn introduced him to Kenny Lerner, an interpreter. Cook shared his first poem after the Ginsberg event called ‘New Life,’ a dinosaur poem, and they had a great connection. He did not know how to use an interpreter as he had never used one before but trusted Kenny. The first time they performed together, people did not know what to make of the performance as it was so different. He describes meeting Debbie Rennie, another Deaf poet, and he loved her style, which was different from other poets. Kenny, Debbie, and Peter became roommates, and they played daily with poetry ideas. In 1987, Jim Cohn set up the first ASL Poetry conference inviting five Deaf poets: Ella Mae Lentz, Patrick Graybill, Debbie Rennie, Clayton Valli, and Peter Cook. He learned a great deal from these Deaf poets as he was young and still gaining experience. This was a unique time in Rochester’s history as Deaf people as well as the hearing community enjoyed sign poetry. Interpreters also got involved such as Susan Chapel, Miriam Lerner, Bob Barrett, Cindy Barrett, Donna Kachites, and Jim Cohn. There were articles in mainstream publications about them and their poetry. At this time, Cook and Lerner received grant monies for Deaf poetry presentations at Writers and Books. For one of the programs there, Serge, Johanna, Kenny and Peter performed a Holocaust poem, ‘Only 13’. He describes Serge’s work, which fascinated him because of the way he used his hands and eyes. Cook discusses the influence of other Deaf poets’ works, like Dorothy Miles, Joseph Castronovo, and Malz, all connected with the National Theatre of the Deaf. Although some of these sign artists are gone, their works continue to live on, and documentation is so necessary, so younger Deaf people can learn from them.
