Uninsured In The Mississippi Delta
In one of the most impoverished and uninsured areas in the U.S., the inhabitants of the Mississippi Delta grapple daily with an impossible dilemma: do they put food on the table or life-saving medicine in the cabinet?
More about Uninsured in the Mississippi Delta from filmmaker Katie Falkenberg
At a time when the health care debate is at the forefront of the political agenda, Uninsured in the Mississippi Delta puts a human face on the struggles of the 46 million Americans surviving without health care.
The Mississippi Delta is one of the most impoverished and uninsured regions of the United States. The area also has soaring rates for diabetes, hypertension and stroke, and some of the highest mortality rates and lowest birth rates in the nation. The town of Greenville, Mississippi, in the heart of the Delta, has, on a per-capita basis, the highest number of uninsured households in the country. Contributing factors to this statistic include high unemployment rates, poverty, business owners who cannot afford health insurance for their workers, and agricultural jobs that are often only seasonal. Those who have jobs that pay minimum wage cannot afford health insurance on their own.
Howard Moncrief and Edward Smith are among those living in the Delta struggling without health insurance. Both of these men, putting the needs of their children and families before their own, have gone without vital health care and medicines. They simply could not afford them.
Inspiration
I had been following the debate on the health care bill in Congress, and was moved by the stories I had heard from those who were struggling without insurance while working on a photo and video project about a Remote Area Medical (RAM) free health care clinic in Appalachia the year before. I knew that this year, with the health care issue being at the forefront of this administration's agenda, I wanted to tell another story to put a human face with the statistics being talked about so frequently in the Capitol and on the news.
When I heard that 34% of the households in the impoverished Delta town of Greenville, Mississippi were living without health insurance, I knew that this was a story that needed to be told. As I began researching the story, I learned that the problem wasn't just concentrated in Greenville; it extended throughout the entire Mississippi Delta region into the rural areas where poverty was rampant and there were few jobs.
Many of the folks who are patients at the two health care clinics I spent time in for this film—the Good Samaritan Health Clinic in Greenville, and the Tutwiler Clinic in Tutwiler—would go without the most basic and vital care if these clinics did not exist. This was a driving force behind my inspiration for this film: that, because of the cost of health care and insurance, people would have to go without the care they desperately need, were it not for these clinics.
Furthermore, it is not only the people in the Delta; it is the 46 million other Americans throughout the country.

How to Do a Mississippi Southern Accent | Accent Training
Watch more How to Do an Accent videos:
Here are some tips for your Mississippi southern accent. It's a romantic stereotype kind of accent, and it's southern drawn out. So you hear the musicality in some of the drawn out portions of it. The jaw is slightly elevated. So if you sigh through that oral posture, you have ahh. Ahh. Ahh. As opposed to your general American oral posture, which is uh, uh. A jaw that's a little bit more dropped.
So let's take a look at some sound changes. The diphthong I, that has two elements, I, ih, is drawn out and lengthened to one sound. Ahh. So my, time, I becomes my, time, I. But that's really the only one that goes to a pure sound. That ahh. Everything else turns into another diphthong. Another two element vowel. So the e sound turns into oi. Is he afraid to speak to me? There's that ahhn glide. Oi. Same thing with a. You want to elongate the first element. I. Play. Jake. Say. Give that a shot.
For that ih sound, that also turns into a diphthong. So hill, pen, chill becomes hill, pen, chill. So we would call this Mississippi southern accent a non-rhotic accent, meaning there are no r's. So you would say things like father, and drifter. Instead of father, and drifter. Also there is no elision in this accent. So you wouldn't say it's farther up. You would say it's farther up. Like that. So you wouldn't connect farther and up. You would say it's farther up. Give that a shot.
Very often in this Mississippi southern, we'll drop the ng sound at the ends of words. So you'll be swimmin', and sittin'. Instead of swimming, and sitting.
So what's the musicality of this accent? Well you hear it right now. It's very lengthened, and very slow southern drawl. So slow that you create diphthongs. You create two element vowels instead of pure vowel sounds.
So have some fun with that accent. This is, like I said, a romantic stereotype accent. But people still speak like this. So look on the internet. Look for some clips. And see what you find in the accent.

Chinese of the Mississippi Delta - An Audiovisual Journey
Two Asian-American photographers from New York traveled to the deep south — The Mississippi Delta — to explore the roots of a seldom-mentioned, but long-established Chinese community. Their images explore the diverse contributions and experiences of both native-born and immigrant residents. But the young photographers' journey is also a story of self-identity in an environment far from home.

Nufarm Americas Unveiling Signage at New Greenville MS Plant
Washington County Economic Alliance announces new manufacturing facility in Greenville, Mississippi
Nufarm to invest $20M and create 68 jobs at new facility.
Greenville, MS - Washington County Economic Alliance (WCEA) is proud to announce Nufarm Americas Inc. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, announced expansion of their North American manufacturing operations with the dedication of a new facility in Greenville, Miss. The announcement took place in Greenville with executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority Glenn McCullough, Congressman Bennie Thompson, Washington County Board of Supervisors President Carl McGee, mayor of Greenville Errick Simmons, Nufarm group executive of supply chain operations Elbert Prado, and Nufarm regional general manager Brendan Deck in attendance.
“Nufarm is an established, well-respected company within the agriculture sector, with farmers around the U.S. and the world relying on its products to protect not only their crops, but their livelihoods, as well,” said MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. “MDA, together with the city of Greenville and the Washington County Economic Alliance, is proud to assist Nufarm as it locates in our state and creates dozens of new career opportunities in the Mississippi Delta.”
Through working this project from the beginning of 2018, WCEA executive director Cary Karlson noted the positive community engagement Nufarm prioritizes within its communities: “This partnership with Nufarm creates a huge economic accomplishment for Greenville and Washington County. Nufarm is a company that places community first, and I am proud that they will now be a part of our community here.”
Additional internal capacity will allow Nufarm to respond to market realities and support their customers. This is largely driven by supplying key products to the southeastern U.S. region from Greenville and leveraging recent Nufarm investments in global supply chain planning and distribution tools to optimize the network.
“This is truly a plant for our customers,” says Brad Hyman, vice president of crop protection for Nufarm in the U.S. “Our customers needed a consistent, high-quality and efficient supply of our product to the southeastern U.S. region, and this new plant allows us to accomplish that with more success and flexibility than ever before.”
The facility will support Nufarm’s growing herbicide and cotton portfolios with state-of-the-art formulation and packaging operations. The 16-acre site was selected after an extensive review throughout the Mississippi River Delta region, and it features an existing 104,500-square-foot facility which will be fully renovated to suit Nufarm’s manufacturing needs.
“We appreciate the partnership created between Nufarm, the City of Greenville and the State of Mississippi and look forward to becoming a member of the Greenville community,” says Tom Lyons, vice president of supply chain and operations. “Nufarm Greenville will be a perfect complement to our other outstanding facilities, delivering safe, high-quality capacity for the North American market.”
Nufarm plans to establish the new plant with a two-part approach. Phase one will feature the hiring of a core team for the establishment of engineering, process equipment and technology infrastructure. Phase two will include the hiring of 30-50 additional skilled workers over five years, building and property upgrades, and further technology and infrastructure investments. Renovation is set to begin soon with commercialization planned for summer 2019.
“As a leader in the agriculture industry, Mississippi is proud to welcome Nufarm as the state’s newest business partner. From Greenville, Nufarm will employ the Mississippi Delta’s skilled workforce to manufacture its crop protection products and ensure their timely delivery to Nufarm’s customers throughout the Southeast,” Gov. Phil Bryant said.
The success of this investment will continue to count on strategic partnerships with the City of Greenville, state of Mississippi and key suppliers. Nufarm and the WCEA look forward to Building a Better Greenville Together!
