Mitchell River Victoria Australia
The Mitchell River is a perennial river of the East Gippsland catchment, located in the Australian state of Victoria. The unregulated river provides a unique example of riparian ecology, flowing generally south with the catchment area drawing from the steep mountains of the Victorian Alps to enter Lake King, one of the Gippsland Lakes, and then empty into the Bass Strait.

Mitchell Gardens Holiday Park presented by Peter Bellingham Photography
Located on the banks of the Mitchell River at the eastern end of Bairndsale's busy shopping centre, Mitchell Gardens Holiday Park boasts one of the prettiest Parks in the district, well appointed and relaxing.
The facilities and friendly approach by the management are second to none and with an AAA Tourism 3.5 star rating, you are assured of an enjoyable holiday.
Enjoy a morning stroll or cycle along the picturesque track that runs through the park along the boardwalk to the Port of Bairnsdale, then on to the Lind Bridge and return across the swing bridge over the Backwater at Howitt Park (a round trip of approx 5.4 km). Or take the nearby East Gippsland Rail Trail - as a designated Rail Trail it is ideal for cycling or walking. It wends its way through the towns of Nicholson, Sarsfield and Bruthen and extends as far as Orbost in the east.
Motorcyclists and motorists will find this the perfect base to enjoy the array of excellent touring routes, whether into the mountains to Dargo, Omeo or Buchan, or exploring the many coastal towns such as Paynesville, Metung and Lakes Entrance.
Why not leave the car at Mitchell Gardens - we are just a short 500 metres stroll to Howett Park Play Ground, BMX Track, Boat ramp & skate park and a few minutes to the Bairnsdale CBD.
Whatever your choice, Mitchell Gardens Holiday Park makes your perfect rest stop in East Gippsland.

Trailer Sailing Lakes Entrance to the Mitchell River Silt Jetties
Sailing from the jetty in Lakes entrance to the Mitchell River Silt Jetties in the north part of Lake King. We continue on up the river to Bairnsdale. Beautiful scenery with aerial shots of the jetties. Bird life, sunrises, sunset and natural beauty make this a special place to visit. On the way back to lakes we spend the night in Box's Creek at our jetty berth before heading back to North Arm and the boat ramp the next day. A wonderful trip and highly recommended.

Bats (Flying Foxes) Nightly Flight | Mitchell River Bairnsdale
Every night during summer the bats ( grey-headed flying foxes ) leave their camp and fly off to feed.
I managed to capture the sight as they leave their camping (nesting) area amongst the trees along the Mitchelll river in Bairnsdale.

Angusvale Road - Mitchell River NP Victoria
This is a video of the road into Angusvale campground. It is fine for 2WD but it does have a lot of corrugation and some large water run off channels that may make the drive uncomfortable. The road is not the easiest to spot, it has a small signpost on the right as you travel along the Dargo Road, however a green letterbox at the entrance to the road is easier to spot. It has several tracks coming off it, some of which are linked below.
Filmed May 2019 after a few days of rain.
