Japan 2015 Miyajima Day 2: Iwaso, Itsukushima Shrine, and the Shopping Street
Sleeping on the futons was a lot more comfortable than you'd think - Japan knows how to make a comfy mattress! Breakfast at Iwaso was your choice of Western or Japanese. I stuck with the Japanese theme, but probably half our party felt like some Western food after the kaiseki dinner. The only disappointment for them was the advertised corn flakes was actually a corn pottage kind of thing. So, not quite the All American breakfast, but it was still tasty.
The group of 9 split up after breakfast. 5 of us wanted to see the Itsukushima shrine in the morning, then head to Nagoya for a brief stop before arriving in Tokyo. The other 4 wanted more relaxation time, which is why they aren't featured in this video!
Before leaving, however, we decided to look around the backyard of Iwaso in the daytime, and wow! It's amazing! The river, the trees, bridges, random shrines (there were more shrines farther up the path we didn't have time to see) - and all right behind the inn. Iwaso is a great location, and actually affordable for a ryokan of its type.
The shrine attached to the cool torii gate we'd seen the night before was lovely as well - and we even caught a Japanese wedding (or at least the photographs for the wedding, which is still cool). The other 4 who stayed behind saw the shrine with the tide in, making the buildings look a little better... but they missed the random Japanese crab as well as walking out on the beach near the gate.
Finally we took a spin through the souvenir/shopping area on our way to the ferry. Lots of cute little stores and food places. I wish we'd had more time to spend there wandering around, but we had places to go! We did, however, but some of those delicious maple leaf snacks you see in the machine at the end. ^_^

MIYAJIMA ( Itsukushima Shrine ) Japan 2015
Miyajima (jap. 宮島, wörtlich: „Schrein-Insel“; eigentlicher Name: 厳島, Itsukushima) gehört zusammen mit Amanohashidate und Matsushima zu den drei schönsten Landschaften Japans.
Die 30,39 km² große Insel liegt etwa zwanzig Kilometer südwestlich von Hiroshima, unmittelbar vor der Küste von Honshū in der Seto-Inlandsee. Sie kann mit Passagierbooten direkt von Hiroshima aus erreicht werden. Außerdem besteht mehrmals pro Stunde eine Fährverbindung von Miyajimaguchi aus, mit der auch die Fahrzeuge der Einwohner übersetzen.
Auf Miyajima lag die Gemeinde Miyajima (宮島町 -chō) mit ungefähr 2.000 Einwohnern, die am 3. November 2005 zusammen mit der Insel Teil der Stadt Hatsukaichi wurde.
Auf der Insel läuft zahmes Wild frei umher. Der Berg Misen in der Inselmitte ist bekannt für seine Japanmakaken, die sich vor allem an der Bergstation der Seilbahn frei und ohne Scheu zwischen den Besuchern bewegen.
Ein typisches Souvenir der Insel sind hölzerne Reislöffel (Shamoji). Kulinarische Spezialitäten sind gegrillte Austern und mit roter Bohnenpaste gefülltes Kleingebäck in Ahornblattform.

Par6/9は、弥山展望台の２階でお弁当の穴子飯を食べました。 朝、フェリーに乗る前に宮島口で買っておいたものです。 冷めても美味しいです。

秋の宮島を早朝散歩したら誰もいなかった！【出雲大社と厳島神社参拝の旅#１０】
宮島のホテル「みや離宮」さんに宿泊しました。
とてもいいホテルでした！
翌日は早朝の散歩に出かけました。
朝６時頃でしたが、人はほとんど見かけません。
この素晴らしい景色を独り占めできました。
【東北出発：出雲大社と厳島神社参拝の旅】
飛行機（ANA）で仙台空港から広島空港まで飛び、
レンタカーで島根まで移動し足立美術館へ立ち寄りました。
そして宍道湖夕日スポット「とるぱ」でしばし鑑賞した後、
出雲のホテルへ入り夕食は「いづものSAKABA」さんへ。
いよいよ出雲大社への参拝です！
昼食は出雲そば「かねや」さんへで３色割子そばを。
弁天島と旧大社駅を観光して、中国自動車道を経由して
広島の宮島口フェリー乗り場へ到着。
車はフェリー乗り場の隣の大きな駐車場へ停めました。
およそ１０分の船旅で宮島へ人生初上陸です。
歩いてホテル「みや離宮」さんへチェックインし
表参道を散策しながら食べ歩きしてみました。
ホテルみや離宮に戻り、お風呂に入り夕食を頂きました。
次回はホテル内の太鼓ショーを見て就寝。。。
翌朝は早朝散歩に出かけました。
次は宮島ロープウェイに乗って山頂に行って来ます！

Japan 2015 Miyajima and the Iwaso Ryokan
Miyajima is a small island near Hiroshima and is most famous for the Itsukushima shrine, which is the torii style gates you see in the water. It also houses some lovely ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), which was perfect for our group as we'd been go-go-go and needed some downtime.
We stayed at Iwaso and I would highly recommend it. The back garden was lovely (and you'll see it in the daytime next video), there were indoor and outdoor onsen (hot springs), and we were greeted by a staff member named Chikage, who loved that we were from Chicago since it was so close to her name.
I spent the whole time there in the yukata and slippers, even when out on the boat tour, and it pretty awesome, but they weren't too fussed if you didn't want to wear it.
The dinner there was a traditional kaiseki affair with multiple courses all from fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. To be quite honest, not all the food hit our taste palettes how we'd like, but it was gorgeous, elegant, and a lot of fun to experience. Here's a breakdown of the food:
*apertif: acerola and Japanese apricot UME wine
*Chopsticks dyeing: assorted seasonal appetizers, Sea urchin, Corn, okra and micro tomato with Ginger source
*appetizers: assorted seasonal appetizers
*sashimi: seasonal fresh fish wrapped FUKUSA with flower, wasabi and UME apricot soy sauce
*Steamed dish: steamed Wagyu beef with sesami ponzu sauce
*Grilled dish: grilled conger eel
*Deep-fried dish: Fried shrimp mince, spring roll and asparagus with mustard and SUDACHI species of Japanese citrus
*Simmered dish: HIYASHI-Noppei winter melon, zucchini, Cauliflower duck sirloin and taro, Citron pepper sauce
*rice: baby sardines and Japanese basil YUKARI
*soup: red miso soup
*pickles: pickled vegetables
*dessert and sweet: Ruby of grapefruit, Kyoho of grape, and pure green Lychee with lemon gelee and mint, rice-flour dumpling SHIRATAMA with sweet redbean soup ZENZAI
The first set of seasonal appetizers included eggplant pudding and jellied shark fin something. . . and was really hard to stomach. The dishes after that were better, like the grilled eel, deep-fried shrinp (that looked like crab-rangoon) and wagyu beef. I liked the red miso, and Mace probably would have liked it if he hadn't spilled it all over himself. And as you can see from the Umeboshi (sour pickled plum pit) Challenge, we did have quite a lot of fun trying each dish. The food was excellently prepared, a feast for the eyes, and mostly delicious!
The boat ride to the shrine was a fun tour we added to our stay. I was a little sad we didn't get to go under the shrine, but it was pretty cool anyhow. Plus the tour guide giving us details and letting us smell the thousands of years old wood was unique.
As for the picture at the end? The guy seriously appeared randomly, and I overheard some other tourists that he walked out from the woods around the shrine. He wanted to be in our group shot very badly, so we figured it'd be fun. The volunteer we got to take the picture did the classic mistake of putting his finger too close to the lens, so it created a perfect storm of tourist picture cliches. After he shook our hands, the gentleman once again wandered off into the dark. Which was kind of the perfect way to end the night!

時間が遅かったので、包ヶ浦の先の大砂利地区まで行きませんでした。
今度、時間がある時に行きたいと思います。

表参道商店街でおやつにもみじ饅頭を食べて、商店街を通ってフェリーに乗って帰ります。 10分位しか無いフェリーですが、海を渡るとすごく旅行した気分になります。

Thanks for watching! This video is of my third week in Japan. I spent most of my time in Kyoto, making a few trips out to visit some incredibly beautiful areas like Miyajima, Nara & Hiroshima.
This week was particularly scenic and picturesque, which made for some sweet filming and photography opportunities. I visited some of the popular sights in Kyoto like Fushimi Inari Taisha and Arashiyama, Miyajima was also a particular highlight - there is something very special about that little island.
I tried a couple new things with the editing of this video, hopefully you like it.

In this video I not only show you these sights, but also a detailed look at how to get there from Hiroshima, all with the aim of saving you money!
