Liz Magic Laser Talks to the Hand | New York Close Up | Art21
Can you tell what politicians mean by what they say or how they move? In this film, artist Liz Magic Laser develops The Digital Face (2012)—a new performance staged at Derek Eller Gallery's former location in Chelsea and at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City—that examines hand gestures in contemporary presidential State of the Union addresses. Struck by the virtuosity of Barack Obama's movement in his 2012 address, Laser examined past speeches to discover that George H. W. Bush was the first president to use gestures in the televised era. The artist choreographs the presidents' wordless movements with two Merce Cunningham-trained dancers—Cori Kresge as Obama, and Alan Good as Bush—into a performative dialogue that reveals how gestures have been embraced and codified by politicians and their handlers over the past two decades. Throughout the rehearsal process, Laser employs stop-action photography to isolate and tweak individual gestures; she later amplifies the sound of the camera shutter's incessant clicking for the performance's soundtrack. Tracing the origin of many of these oratorical techniques to the 19th century theoretician François Delsarte, Laser is concerned with how contemporary political figures are adopting theatrical tools to persuade the public, masking the content of their speeches with movements designed to induce empathy through well-rehearsed and often subliminal cues. We are living in strange days, says Laser, where performance itself has become the dominant instrument of power.
Liz Magic Laser (b. 1981, New York City, NY, USA) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Learn more about the artist at:

Buster Simpson: Art Antioxidant
Buster Simpson, an artist active since the late 1960s, has worked on major infrastructure and planning projects, site-specific sculptures, museum installations, and community interventions. Simpson was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan, where he received his MFA in 1969, and later, the Distinguished Alumni Award in Architecture and Design. Simpson is a recipient of numerous awards, including NEA fellowships and the Americans for the Arts Public Art Award in 2009. “I prefer working in public spaces. The complexity of any site is its asset, to distill, build upon, and reveal, the challenge is to sharpen the conjunction between poetry and place.”
Simpson has exhibited at The New Museum, MoMA PS1, Seattle Art Museum, The Hirshhorn Museum, Capp Street Project, International Glass Museum, and a recent retrospective at the Frye Art Museum. Simpson’s work is included in numerous public commissions throughout North America.
This University of Michigan Bicentennial event is presented with support from Chelsea River Gallery.
Hurricane Sandy aftermath in Rockaway Beach 11/9/2012
Officially was able to return home since the power and heat had come back to Broad Channel. So, after being home and relaxed for a bit. I grabbed my digital camera and camcorder and walked over the Toll bridge that leads into Rockaway and headed to the Beach area. I knew I was going to see damage and debris but what I saw I couldn't believe it. The boardwalk was completely gone, piles of sand and sand was all over the roads. I was in complete shock, you can actually walk onto the beach without using the steps from the boardwalk, my jaw dropped. I only stayed there til the sun went down and I headed back home. This is my last video of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy(others call it Superstorm Sandy)

McCarthy says, I'm really looking forward to hosting One To One. One of the best things about being a journalist is you get to meet a lot of smart and interesting people and to pick their brains, so to speak, about a variety of important issues affecting our daily lives. It's a learning process both for the journalist and for the audience you're able to reach. The advantage of One To One is that there are no sound bites - just provocative, insightful, and thoughtful conversation. We have some phenomenal guests lined up for One To One and I'm excited about hearing what they have to say.

Emerging Voices 2011: Tobias Armborst, Dan D’Oca, and Georgeen Theodore, Interboro Partners
Recorded: March 9, 2011
Interboro Partners is a Brooklyn-based office of architects, urban designers, and planners “who work together to improve the urban environment.” In this excerpt from their lecture they discuss In the Meantime, Life with Landbanking, Fishkill, NY; Improve Your Lot!, Detroit, MI; and Holding Pattern, Long Island City, NY. Founded in 2002 and led by Tobias Armborst, Daniel D’Oca, and Georgeen Theodore, Interboro has engaged in projects “that represent an ever-expanding concept of what architecture is, of how it acts on the world, but also how it is acted upon by individuals, institutions, ideas, idealizations, and objects.” Recent projects include LentSpace, a temporary sculpture park in lower Manhattan; Made in Midtown, a project with the Design Trust for Public Space, researching Manhattan’s garment district; The Arsenal of Exclusion/Inclusion, a “dictionary” of policies, institutions, and phenomena that foster and restrict access to the built environment, produced for the 2009 International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam; and West Market Redevelopment Plan for the City of Newark. The office has received numerous grants and fellowships from institutions, including the Design Trust for Public Space, the Graham Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Interboro Partners was selected by the Architectural League in 2005 to participate in the Young Architects Forum (now known as the Architectural League Prize) and were just announced as the 2011 winners of the P.S.1 and MoMA Young Architects Program.
The Architectural League’s annual Emerging Voices Award spotlights North American individuals and firms with distinct design “voices” that have the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. The work of each Emerging Voice represents the best of its kind, and addresses larger issues within architecture, landscape, and the built environment.

SUMMARY
=======
Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City. It is geographically adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the southwestern end of Long Island and to Nassau County farther east on Long Island; in addition, Queens shares water borders with the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. Coterminous with Queens County since 1899, the borough of Queens is the second-largest in population (after Brooklyn), with a census-estimated 2,358,582 residents in 2017, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens County also is the second-most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, behind the neighboring borough of Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each of New York City's boroughs were an independent city, Queens also would be the nation's fourth most populous, after Los Angeles in California, Chicago in Illinois and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.Queens was established in 1683 as one of the original 12 counties of New York. The settlement was presumably named for the English queen Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705). Queens became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898, and from 1683 until 1899, the County of Queens included what is now Nassau County.
Queens has the most diversified economy of the five boroughs of New York City. It is home to John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, both among the world's busiest, which in turn makes the airspace above Queens among the busiest in the United States. Landmarks in Queens include Flushing Meadows–Corona Park; Citi Field, home to the New York Mets baseball team; the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the US Open tennis tournament; Kaufman Astoria Studios; Silvercup Studios; and Aqueduct Racetrack. The borough has diverse housing, ranging from high-rise apartment buildings in the urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to somewhat more suburban neighborhoods in the eastern part of the borough, including Little Neck, Douglaston, and Bayside.

Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, the most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, and the second-most densely populated county in the United States, after the county of New York (which is coextensive with the borough of Manhattan).[3]
