Tour Astonishing Easter Island: Hanga Roa Town
Most travelers come to Easter Island on a 4 day/3 night package, as did we and then explore the exact same sights in the exact same order. We selected Hotel O'Tai in the center of Hanga Roa for our stay. Exclusive and uber expensive hotels are Altiplanico and Explora; both of whom include all sights, guides and food in their rates but we were very happy at O'Tai, convenient to all restaurants. And only five minutes from the airport!
Easter Island is 3,700 kilometers/2,300 miles west of South America and the only other way to access by air is from Tahaiti. Occasional cruise lines do include Easter Island in their itineraries. Why visit? For the incredible Maoi (stone statues). In-depth videos of all that we saw and did will follow...

Hi! My name is Caya (CayaPhoto) and I like telling stories with my videos and my photos. This is the first attempt I make at a new format.
_________________
I moved to Santiago in late 2013. My company had just been accepted in a program for startups called Startup Chile, and my co-founders and I moved there for 6 months.
Flying to Easter Island is expensive. A Flight from Santiago on good dates is about $500, and trust me, we waited. Back then I lived on a $1,200 salary which is OK for Santiago but certainly not enough to travel much. I also had debt I had piled up from my previously failed startup attempt.
Our friends in startup Chile made trips to Torres del Paine, Atacama Desert and even Argentina, we saved up for Easter Island.
Less than a week before the trip I had been back home, where I learned I was going to be a dad. I was still wrapping my head around this as we flew out. I even considered canceling the trip, considering how broke I was, working for a still uncertain startup… and with a kid on the way, but luckily most expenses had already been paid for.
Rapa Nui, as the locals call this landmark island, is one of the most isolated places on Earth. A flight from Santiago, the nearest continental land mass is over 5 hours. Only about 4,000 people live on the tiny Island, which is just 25 km or 15 miles across.
Accommodations are quite humble, but Easter island is beautiful.
Wild horses roam the prairies. An inactive volcano crater dominates the landscape. Unsurprisingly, the locals settled Orongo, one of their villages there well over 500 years ago; most of which still stands and seems stolen out of the Last Jedi, or the other way around.
There’s a single beach on Rapa Nui, on the far side of the Island, the rest of the coast is made up of sharp, black, volcanic rock.
This volcanic rock is the material in which the Moai were sculpted, which is of course the reason we were there. As a kid my mom used to tell me how much she dreamt of visiting… and here I was, lucky enough to visit as early as my twenties.
The first statue you’ll probably see is the lonely Te Ata Hero, near Hanga Roa, the population center... only a few steps from there is Ahu Tahai, where you’ll see one of the best restored statues, with eyes and Pukao.
Over 900 statues were carved on Rapa Nui, between the years 1250 and 1500... and you can truly see the evolution of their designs, from very basic and simple shapes to the more stylized and ambitious statues.
They were carved as a symbol of political power and it’s also believed that they represented their ancestors. When the island was discovered on 1722 all the moai were standing, but by the 19th century they had all been toppled. It is believed that tribal rivalries over changing religions was the reason for the conflict. All the moai standing today were brought back up by archeologists.
The most mind boggling place on the island is Rano Raraku, the quarry were all of the moai were sculpted. While smaller, lighter pieces were transported over 10 miles across the island, the biggest moai never made it out of the quarry... they were just left abandoned.
This moai which was left incomplete, is 70ft or 21m long and weighs 270 tons. Walking the slopes of this crater turned quarry is out of this world.
A couple kilometers down stands Ahu Tongariki, the biggest Ahu on the island with the biggest Moai outside of the quarry. We heard this was a great place for sunrises, so on our last day on the island, we woke up at 3am in the morning and drove our rented scooter there.
There are no street lamps outside Hanga Roa, and without any planning this happened to be a new moon night. I had never seen stars so bright. You could walk around just with the starlight.
I only had my old Sony alpha nex-3 then, that my uncle sold to me. Luckily, he had bought a 16mm Lens that he included in the deal. This was my first time trying astrophotography.
I balanced the camera on the motorcycle seat, since I was carrying no tripod and we shot these.
To photograph the Ahu, I balanced the camera on the grass with some rocks. A couple or decent shots came up, with a coincidentally aligned Milky Way... but I wasn’t able to get enough light on the moai.
This is when a car drove by. By the strangest coincidence a car drove by at 4:30am in the morning, just as I was exposing the 30 second shot. The headlights illuminated the statues just right, with just the right amount of light… and I captured this.
We moved out of Chile only a couple weeks after this trip. With the both amazing and scary news I had received just a week earlier, escaping to Easter Island for a week helped me remain sane, and prepare for what was to come.

The capital of Easter Island, Hangarah. The blue sea and fresh winds of the South Pacific meet the traveler. Rapapui discovered by the Dutch expedition in 1722. It was called Easter Island because it was Easter, but still people here call it Rapanu. After a long and long journey, I finally met Moai statue. Even if I have to report it, my heart is getting bigger in the mystery. In 1888, he became Chilean, but after the hard work of the Rapa Nui people, he was recognized for his autonomy in 1966. Easter Island, with three uninhabited islands, including Motunui Island, is not yet a popular destination.

next day. I got up early and found a market in the village of Hangaroa. Small and simple atmosphere. Every step I feel the nostalgia. A friendly smile woman who sells a variety of vegetables and fruits from trucks and honestly tells her where she is from. A sculptor who resembles Moai, carving Moi with wood. A young merchant who is selling some of Rafanui's native corn in an unnecessarily fashionable fashion shop. It is an anaconda of the sea and it is a fish shop uncle which boasts the fish which it pushes and pushes the fish which it is strong. It is the people who open the lively morning of the market of the village of Hanga Roa. One of the most popular items on the market is natural fish. It sells fresh tuna and various fish caught in the nearby sea without freezing. Inexpensive prices are also attractive. The most delicious part of the fish is here, on the chest. Tuna oil is the most abundant in this area. Not only the villagers but also many tourists who came to know the information in advance. I bought some tuna. This is yellow tuna. Also known as yellow tail. It is a very good site. look. It's yellow. It's fresh. I got it right from the sea. When I go home, I'll cut it, or I'll burn it with a steak.

Tahai Ceremonial Complex at Hanga Roa Easter Island
A Tour around the Moai of Hanga Roa on Easter Island.
The Tahai Ceremonial Complex is an archaeological site on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in Chilean Polynesia. Restored in 1974 by the late Dr. William Mulloy, an American archaeologist, Tahai comprises three principal ahu from north to south: Ko Te Riku (with restored eyes), Tahai, and Vai Ure. Visible in the distance from Tahai are two restored ahu at Hanga Kio'e, projects that Mulloy undertook in 1972.

JUly 22, 2017 I was lucky enough to be able to visit Easter Island for about a week. These statues called MOAI are located on Hanga Roa, Easter Island.
FROM WIKIPEDIA: Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park.

Full Day Tour around Easter Island
My first full day on Easter Island and I go on an organised tour to the main sites.
The first stop is Ahu Hanga Te’e, a site with eight fallen Moai and their Pukao (topknots). Some of these topknots fell into the sea when the Moai where toppled but were recovered in 1986. You can really see the red colour of these topknots. In front of the of the ahu is a pania (a ceremonial stone circle).
Next on our tour is Ahu Akahanga, as we arrive a local seller has set up a stall by the entrance and Chris explains the significance of some of the local items such as the Rongo Rongo tablet which contains ancient Rapa Nui writing.
Ahu Akahanga is also known as the “platform of the king” because, according to legend, the tomb of Hoto Matu’a is nearby. There is 4 Ahu, 12 Moai and 8 Pukao, a boat ramp, earth ovens and a small cave that we went it that contained lots of spiders on the ceiling.
We then went to what I think is the most impressive site on the Island, Rano Raraku. Rano is the Easter Island statue quarry and not only are there cavities in the volcanic rock where the moai were carved and removed but many moai are still in various states of completion.
This is where we had to pay the $60 park entry fee which is good for five days so hopefully will not need to pay anything again it has recently gone up from $10 which it was for many years. I don’t mind paying the fee if it helps to preserve the statues.
We walk around the quarry following the designated paths and are not allowed to touch any of the statues, we spend a bit of time here exploring all the moai. Chris explains that the statues are actually in pits buried up to their necks and only 1/3 of the figures are visible, this was so the sculptors could work on the statues back and face.
We walk around the hill a bit to see a moai still attached to the cliff, Chris shows us the tool that the sculptors used to carve the statues; it was basically a hard bit of stone that the used to bang against the soft stone of the moai. We continued to walk around and saw the kneeling moai which has had to have a fence put around it due to people having their pictures taken on it’s knee causing it to get damaged, someone has even carved their initials into its back.
We then walk a bit higher and come across “El Gigante” the largest moai ever carved at 65 feet and estimated to weigh 250 tons, it is still in it’s construction phase and would have been impossible to move if complete.
To finish our tour at Rano Raraku we walk up to the craters rim to see the fresh water lake that is inside. There is also a number of moai in here as well. On the shore of the lake there are a number of reed beds.
We walk back to the bus and move on to our next site, but before we do I have a quick look around the shop but to be honest it is not very good.
We then call at Ahu Tongaiki, probably one of the most photographed Ahu’s on the Island and the biggest. It contains 15 moai that have been recently restored after the Ahu was destroyed in the 1960’s by a Tsunami. On the approach to the Ahu you pass by a lonely moai know as the “Travelling Moai” due to the fact it went on a tour around Japan a few years ago. The size of the 15 statues is immense and with them being on top of their platform increases their scale as you look up at them. There is also some petroglyphs carved into the ground in front of the Ahu showing a turtle.
The penultimate archaeological site of the tour is Ahu Te Pito Kura which has the largest moai that was ever moved at 32 feet and 82 tons. It is also said that Te Pito Kura was the last statue to be pulled down, probably some time after 1838. we walk over to the left side towards the bay where there is a spherical rock about three feet in diameter with four smaller rocks around it. Legend states that Hotu Matu’a brought this stone from his original homeland. The stone is said to have special powers, in fact if you pass a compass over the stone the needle changed direction, which we tested out, I even tried it with my iphone and it did move around.
The final stop on the tour was Anakena beach. We first went to look at the platform with seven moai on it. These are some of the best preserved examples of moai on the Island as they remained protected and undisturbed buried in the sand until they were recently discovered and restored. This is also the site where the only moai eye was found and is on display in the museum which I will be visiting later in the trip.
