The winners of this year’s Mornington Peninsula Shire Best Bites Food Awards were presented with their awards by Mayor Councillor Graham Pittock at the Council Meeting on 9th May.
Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron and Hummingbird Eco Retreat Red Hill were joint winners of the Restaurant of the Year for their excellence in nutrition and healthy eating, tobacco control, waste and recycling, energy and water efficiency and access for all.
Merchant and Maker McCrae and Merricks General Wine Store were joint winners of the Café of the Year, with other category award winners being:

Winner - Harmony Bed and Breakfast Fingal
School Canteen/Child Care:
Winner – St Josephs Catholic Primary School Crib Point

Joint winners were Merchant and Maker in McCrae and Mock Orchards in Red Hill
Foxey’s Hangout in Red Hill was awarded the People’s Choice Award for food businesses that were nominated by local food consumers.
Finalists in each of these categories were judged by an independent panel to determine the award winners.
Best Bites Food Awards is a Mornington Peninsula Shire program that recognises the most outstanding local food businesses in the areas of healthy eating, tobacco control, sustainability and access for all.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Graham Pittock said all winners and nominees were truly deserving of recognition.
“The Best Bites winners set great examples within the local food industry by ensuring that our community has access to safe, healthy and sustainable food,” he said.
Ange Barry, CEO of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation presented St Josephs Primary School with their award in the Child Care/School Canteen category.
The Best Bites Food Guide – which lists previous award winners and all local food businesses that have received Best Bites certification – is available free from Shire customer service centres, tourism offices and online at mornpen.vic.gov.au/Whats_On/Best_Bites_Food_Guide
Nominations are now open for the 2017 Best Bites Food Guide and Food Awards. The Shire is encouraging businesses to nominate by the closing date of 15 July, and is also encouraging customers to nominate their favourite food business for a Best Bites Award by emailing food@mornpen.vic.gov.au

Hill Airmen, F-35 a lethal combo at Red Flag
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. – Today, Airmen from the 388th Fighter Wing’s 4th Fighter Squadron wrapped up flying operations with the F-35A Lightning II in an “exponentially more challenging” Red Flag.
The 4th FS integrated the F-35A into a large, capable “Blue Force” in diverse missions against an equally capable “Red Force.” Nearly 3,000 personnel from 39 separate units participated in the exercise, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force.
The Red Force was made up of hybrid threats, combinations of the “most advanced weapons systems out there,” meant to replicate “near-peer” enemies in a large scale conflict. The shift closely aligns with the National Defense Strategy.

The candidate on this clip, Dave, had his first driving test at the beginning of December, but he failed his driving test for not checking his left mirror before moving across a bus lane.
We then had a break from lessons over the Christmas period and after 3 or 4 lessons to refresh and go over his last test here we are again.
