Modesto Through the Century: 1912-2012
I made this video to capture Modesto's history, growth, and evolution throughout the past 100 years. This was the opening video shown at the Centennial Gala for the Modesto Chamber of Commerce which was held on March 10, 2012 at the Gallo Arts Center. Segments of this video were displayed at a Modesto Nuts (professional baseball) game on April 6, 2012. Special thanks to AT&T, Bank of America, Chicago Title, Foster Farms, JS West, PG&E and the McHenry Museum for the historic photos.

Amgen Tour of California Starting Line - Modesto, California
Yesterday the Amgen Tour of California started off the second leg of the race in Modesto, California. We were there to capture the event on film.
Here is some more information about the from Wiki:
The Tour of California (officially known as the Amgen Tour of California for sponsorship purposes) is an annual professional cycling stage race on the UCI World Tour and USA Cycling Professional Tour. It was first held in 2006. The eight-day race covers 650–700 miles (1,045–1,126 km) through the U.S. state of California. A typical edition might begin in Nevada City, travel through the redwoods, wine country and the Pacific Coast, and finish in a southern California city such as Escondido. The 2009 race crossed the Central Valley from Merced to Fresno, with an excursion through the Sierra Nevada foothills, before crossing over to the coast. The tour is sponsored by Amgen, a large California-based biotech company.
With eight or nine of the 20 UCI ProTour teams (known as ProTeams) usually racing, the Tour of California is one of the most important cycling races in the United States, along with the Tour of Utah. On November 28, 2006, the UCI upgraded it from 2.1 (category 1) to 2.HC (French: Hors categorie; English: beyond category), the highest rating for races on the UCI Continental Circuits and one of only four such stage races in the United States. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the Tour of Utah were the only other current 2.HC being raced as of 2015. On August 2, 2016, the UCI upgraded the race to World Tour status and added it to the 2017 UCI World Tour schedule. [1]
The race was originally staged in February but, the 2010 Tour of California was moved to May, the same time that the Giro d'Italia is held.[2] At the time of the move it was considered likely that the number of Americans in the Giro and Italians in the Tour of California would decrease.[3] Tour of California organizers sought to make the race a preparatory event for the Tour de France, believing few riders who seek a serious position in the Tour would ride the Giro. Since the change in schedule, the race has continued to be held in May.

A Song About Modesto, California - Modesto, The Home I Know - Mick V. Rubalcava
A song written by Mick V. Rubalcava, who is the man who brings you Modesto News .org .
This is an original song written and performed by Mick V. Rubalcava.
Here are the song lyrics:
With all the things I thought I knew
Growing up I never really knew you
But, after searching for my home
It's you I found, it's you I know
-
I know the faces
The people
I know all of the sights and the sounds of a Downtown Festival.
-
I know the voices
That echo
I know the lonely man who refused to grow old.
-
Lo the changes I have seen
Every inch of you holds a memory
My first kiss under the tree
My childhood home, my first baby...
-
I know the street lights
Every road
I know your sweet embrace when I feel so alone
-
I know the trees' sway
In the moon's glow
I know the pathways no one else knows.
-
With all the things I thought I knew
Growing up I never really knew you
But, after searching for my home
I found you, Modesto.
This is a song that I wrote inspired by my own experiences as a teenager when I was forced to live on the streets of Modesto for a period of time. I first really began to love Modesto when Modesto was the one and only place I could call my home. When it was a town, and not a house that I called my home.
This is an acoustic version of the song, and perhaps one day soon I will produce a full band version of the song along with a new music video.
Until then, I am Mick V. Rubalcava. I am here to be your reporter and to capture moments in time on film for you, and for those who will come after us. In addition to filming, I will do what I can to capture the spirit of Modesto with musical performances like this.

The Stanislaus County Fair - 100th Anniversary
The Stanislaus County Fair is coming back to Turlock, California again this year on July 15th celebrating it's hundredth year anniversary! Modesto News .org is of course going to be there but before the fair even starts we wanted to bring you this informative interview with Adrenna Alkhas, the Marketing and Communications Director of the fair to give an exclusive heads up on what the Stanislaus County Fair is going to be bringing you this year!
Modesto News .org is your source for awesome and exclusive video coverage of the Modesto area bringing you breaking action news along with entertaining and informative videos like this one.
Here is a brief history of the Stanislaus County Fair from Wikipedia:
In 1911, the Turlock Melon Carnival took place for the first time, sponsored by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. The Turlock Melon Carnival was an effort to promote and market the local melon industry and shipping business. A group of musicians was organized to become the Melon City Band. The Melon Carnival lasted only a few years, and in 1924 the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 organized a 4th of July celebration for largely the same purpose. In 1925 the American Legion resurrected the name Turlock Melon Carnival for the mid-summer festival. The 4H and Future Farmers of America livestock shows were instituted in 1933, and in 1935 the State of California issued a charter that established the 38th District Agriculture Association (DAA) which remains today. The fair was run jointly by the American Legion post and the DAA until 1944 when the American Legion sold the site and buildings to the DAA, which has had the sole responsibility for its operation ever since. No fairs were held during World War II although the carnivals and horse pulling events continued in the downtown area. The fair was used as a civilian assembly center for Japanese Americans in 1942. The fair was also used as a Rehabilitation Center for the U.S. Army Ninth Service Command from 1943 to 1946. The fair resumed operation after the war and in 1956 the name Stanislaus County Fair was used for the first time on the marquee. In 1960, the fairgrounds became the original home of California State University, Stanislaus. On the 15th of March in 1999, the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors of the 38th District Agricultural Association with support of the Turlock American Legion resolved that the Stanislaus County Fair Arch Gate be recognized as a California State Point of Historical Interest. A marker was unveiled during an opening night ceremony during the 1999 fair and is on public view just inside the historic Arch Gate.

Sheriff releases video in deputies’ fatal shooting of kidnapping suspect
Keep me motivated by donating to
Viewer discretion is always advised when watching this video and I do not take any responsibility to your trauma, psychological and/or mental harm.
Stanislaus County Sheriff Jeff Dirkse released Thursday body camera footage from a July 17 incident in which deputies fatally shot a kidnapping suspect in west Modesto.
This is the first time the Sheriff’s Department has released footage since deputies started wearing cameras in April.
The footage is part of a video titled “Critical Incident Community Briefing” that Dirkse released and includes remarks from him as well as details of the incident that provide context for the shooting.
The body camera footage is from two of the four SWAT team members who fired at the suspect, later identified as 52-year-old Stephen Murray of Modesto.
The body camera footage is dark (the shooting occurred about 10 p.m.), graphic and chaotic and shows SWAT team members repeatedly yelling at Murray to put his hands up and then firing at him as he held what authorities believed to be a handgun and his female hostage as a shield between him and deputies.
The handgun turned out to be a replica.
Dirkse said in an interview that his department’s interaction with Murray started the day before when Ceres police asked for help in finding Murray, who was a suspect in a car theft in that city.
Dirkse said when deputies contacted him in west Modesto on July 16, he said he was armed and had a hostage. Deputies did not know whether that was a credible threat or a ruse by Murray to get them to leave him alone.
Sheriff’s detectives followed up the next day, July 17, and learned Murray’s statements were credible. They followed him throughout the day, and authorities repeatedly tried to resolve the matter peacefully through the use of “patrol resources” and the hostage negotiation team.
“During these interactions, statements were made by Mr. Murray threatening law enforcement and the hostage,” according to the video. “Additionally, information was received that Mr. Murray was armed with a firearm.”
Before the shooting, detectives and SWAT team members were monitoring a South Jefferson Street home that Murray and his female hostage were seen entering.
When Murray and the woman left the home after more than two hours, SWAT team members “seeing an opportunity to conduct a rescue, approached the pair at” Vine and Madison streets, about a block from the home. That ended with SWAT team members firing upon Murray.
Dirkse said in the video and reiterated in his interview that it is important the Sheriff’s Department share as much as it can about these incidents with the public. And he asked for patience in the video because the investigations into this incident are in their early stages.
He expects to release a video regarding the July 16 death of a man after he had struggled with deputies in south Modesto. Deputies were dispatched after reports that the man was acting erratically and fighting with a family member.
Dirkse said the release is taking longer because there is more body camera footage to review and he wants to produce a version with Spanish subtitles because of the large number of Spanish speakers in south Modesto.
This comes as Assembly Bill 748 took effect July 1. The law calls for state and local police agencies to release audio and video, including body camera footage, from critical incidents within 45 days unless doing so would hamper an active investigation.
Dirske said the new law is part of the reason for his decision to release videos of critical incidents, but he said he also is doing it because the public expects it.
He said he decided to release the body camera footage from the fatal shooting of Murray as part of a video that included additional information to ensure the public had the context to make sense of the incident. He said that is a best practice being followed by law enforcement agencies.
But he said he would release just the body camera footage if the media or members of the public requested it through the provisions of AB 748.

Patient care to me means giving a patient the best experience they could have from the minute they walk in the door to the minute they leave. Everybody comes in and wants to give 100% or more every day and it’s a hard working team. The staff here is great – all the ladies that we work with here are wonderful, the doctors are amazing. Dr. Cadra – he has a really big heart and he’s a go-getter. He’s the guy I want in my corner if there’s a trauma or if I have a small child that needs care. We try to explain in our consultative process the procedures in detail, how to prepare for them, what’s going to happen during and following the procedures, to make them at ease when they come in for their actual surgical appointment. Dr. Barber is a fantastic addition to our team; I think he brings a passion for surgery and just a love for people in general. I think what makes me passionate about being an oral surgeon is just the ability to really restore someone’s smile, and someone’s confidence; try to put them at ease and I just really enjoy working with people and getting to know them, and hearing their story and kind of becoming a part of their lives for a little bit. Dr. Baker’s a great guy – he’s very sincere, very positive, wonderful surgeon. I feel our practice differs from those around in experience, training and across the board availability. With 3 doctors in the practice, we are able to keep the office staffed with 2 doctors virtually every day of the year, which is our goal. I believe that we are the premier oral surgery practice in the whole area, I mean as far as you can drive in either direction, because we have doctors that are committed to excellent patient care, whether that be doing an implant or doing a facial reconstruction, they’re the best. I just am proud of the team that we have here, the staff, our administration, the doctors that I work with; it couldn’t be a better place.
