Introducing: Boozehound Barrel-Aged Old Fashion Ale
MODIST BREWING CO. AND PARLOUR BAR ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF BOOZEHOUND, A BARREL AGED OLD FASHIONED ALE
At 40 proof, Boozehound is made from a base that features a Modist brewed spirit - a new category of alcohol
Nearly one year in the making, the people of Modist Brewing and Parlour Bar are proud to announce the arrival of Boozehound, a one-of-a-kind fusion of beer and spirits. Boozehound is made from a bourbon mash that’s brewed and fermented as a beer, aged in bourbon barrels, then served as an Old Fashioned. Boozehound will release on tap at Modist’s North Loop Minneapolis taproom on Wednesday, May 22nd and at Parlour Bar Minneapolis and St Paul on Thursday, May 23rd.
The project began when Parlour Bar, well known for having one of the best Old Fashioneds around, contacted Modist, well known for pushing the boundaries of what beer can be, to see if they could find a good use for some hand selected 9-12-year-old level 4 char Knob Creek barrels. Once he stopped drooling, Modist Brewing’s Co-Founder/Head Brewer Keigan Knee pitched the idea of launching a new type of alcohol called brewed spirits* he had been brainstorming for a long time. “I’ve been sitting on this idea for a while, and the barrels that Jesse [Held, Bar Consultant of Jester Concepts] had picked out were perfect. Based on the barrels and the pedigree of their cocktails, we decided a bourbon brewed spirit presented as an Old Fashioned was the way to go,” said Keigan.
Because of Modist’s mash filter powered brewing system, they were able to replicate an exact bourbon grain bill recipe that they brewed and fermented as a beer. Using an ale yeast strain with high alcohol tolerance, the beer reached 20% alcohol by volume (40 proof) before being transferred to the barrels for aging. Also, put in the barrels was a special type of Mexican raw sugar called Piloncillo, which is a staple ingredient of Parlour’s Old Fashioneds.
After aging in barrels for nearly a year, Boozehound was transferred to kegs for its official debut this May. The finished product will be served from the tap with a splash of bitters and garnished with orange peel. It will be available on draft for a limited time at Modist, Parlour Minneapolis, Borough, and Parlour St Paul.
*About Brewed Spirits
Brewed Spirits is Modist’s coined name for a style of beer that is made to replicate a traditional spirit. By using an identical grain mash bill or ingredient base of a typical style of liquor, the goal of a brewed spirit is to get as close as possible to creating a “spirit,” while working within the legal limitations of beer. After successfully creating a bourbon base for what became Boozehound, Modist now plans to launch a series of other brewed spirits, including several different types of whiskey (including 100% rye), tequila, and rum.
About Modist Brewing Co.
Modist opened in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis in April of 2016 aiming to modify beer and how it is perceived by defying rules and expectations. Utilizing a mash filter powered brewing system, they push past traditional brewing by embracing creativity and unconstrained experimentation. Modist showcases their innovative spirit via the creation of a series of never seen before beers, including their flagship brews: Dreamyard (hazy IPA made from entirely oats and wheat sans barley), False Pattern (hazy pale ale brewed from oats), and First Call (an oat-based coffee lager that’s blonde in color).
In their first year of business, Modist was named both the Best New Brewery in Minnesota by Growler Magazine as well as one of “The 50 Best Breweries in the United States” by BeerAdvocate. In the time since opening, they’ve received continuous accolades including recently being named Minnesota’s Most Innovative Brewery, as well as a multitude of individual beer awards.
About Parlour Bar, Minneapolis and Saint Paul
Parlour, located directly below Borough in Minneapolis, set a new standard for bartending and cocktail creation in the Twin Cities. The large bar features tufted banquettes and intimate tables. The craft cocktail menu has its foundation in the classics, using freshly squeezed juice, house-made syrups, elixirs, and rare artisanal spirits. A brief food menu featuring fare from Borough includes elevated bar snacks, including a legendary burger.
In April 2018, Parlour St. Paul joined the West 7th Neighborhood. Taking all of the things that made Parlour Minneapolis what it is, the burger, old fashioned and atmosphere, the new space is larger along with the menu. A decadent menu is available at brunch and dinner, complete with all-day eggs, sandwiches, and a selection of shareable plates.

Short Time Shots: Auditing the show notes (11-26-19)
Time to get back in the ring, to take another swing. The walls were shaking, the earth was quaking, my mind was aching - you know what, I saw AC/DC live back in 2016, you don’t need to relive that show, although it was super awesome. I’d previous had tickets to see them in high school, in September of 1996. That tour got canceled before it got to Hampton. So there I was, 20 years later, with my pregnant wife on Valentine’s Day rocking out to AC/DC. What’s that have to do with wrestling? Nothing really, other than AC/DC is a favorite on wrestling playlists worldwide. I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more in and around the sport of wrestling.
By the way, if you notice the episode numbers changing, that’s because I did an audit of the amount of Short Time episodes in the feed. The most recent show where I interviewed some folks in Little Rock was actually the 580th episode. At some point, I didn’t count things and had some other non-Short Time shows in the feed. That’s been fixed and sure enough, this is the 581st edition of Short Time, whether it be in the Shots form or my more formal feature story/interview format. I also went to the Richard Nixon School of Accounting. Most of you won’t get that joke.
Minnesota Beer of the Night: Bite Size by Modist Brewing. It’s classified as a Pastry Stout, with some evil chattering teeth on the can. It checks in at 6.7% and it’s pretty good for the first major snowfall expected to hit the land of New Brighton by the time you listen to it. Remember, I’m on Untappd at jasonbryant12. By the way, the Modist taproom is about a mile and a half from U.S. Bank Stadium.
Dual Meets:
It was a close one down south in Division II where a fall from Jonathan Miller at 141 pounds was the difference as No. 21 UNC Pembroke edged No. 17 Limestone 20-19 in Pembroke on Tuesday. All-American Nick Daggett also scored a key bonus victory for the Braves at 125 pounds. Lindsey Wilson, ranked third in the NAIA, won nine out of 10 bouts and scored six falls as the Blue Raiders trounced Division II Bellarmine 47-3 in Columbia. Returning national champion Brandon Reed picked up his fall at 1:10 at heavyweight. Grand View, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, ran its dual meet win streak to 80 in a row after blanking Benedictine (Kansas) 50-0. During that stretch, Grand View has outscored opponents by an average score of 42.3 to 4.95. There’s also been 27 shutouts. The Vikings have won 108 of their last 109 duals with the last loss coming in November of 2013 to Division I Iowa State. Keeping it in the NAIA, fifth-ranked Campbellsville won a pair of duals at home on Tuesday. First the Tigers topped the Phoenix of Cumberland University (Tenn.) 34-6 before dispatching with West Virginia Tech 59-0, yes, one away from a perfect score. Cumberland beat West Virginia Tech 48-6. Marian beat Missouri Baptist 43-6. In Division III, fifth-ranked Augsburg was aided by five forfeits in shutting out St. Olaf 57-0 at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis. Guess what, the office of St. Olaf College President David “The Duck” Anderson has ignored two more requests for interviews after feeding the Board of Regents and alumni a load of scat, no matter which animal it originates. SUMMARY
=======
The maritime history of the United States is a broad theme within the history of the United States. As an academic subject, it crosses the boundaries of standard disciplines, focusing on understanding the United States' relationship with the oceans, seas, and major waterways of the globe. The focus is on merchant shipping, and the financing and manning of the ships. A merchant marine owned at home is not essential to an extensive foreign commerce. In fact, it may be cheaper to hire other nations to handle the carrying trade than to participate in it directly. On the other hand, there are certain advantages, particularly during time of war, which may warrant an aggressive government encouragement to the maintenance of a merchant marine.
