Rackless Kazi DJ Residency in Lusaka Zambia
#RacklessKazi is a platform for young women between the ages 18 to 35 who are DJs, performers, electronic music producers and sound engineers.
The platform will be built through an 6-day interactive residency with international mentor DJs and programmers from South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and the UK. The residency will run from 3 – 8 December 2018 and will be held in Lusaka, Zambia.
Our project aims to capacitate, connect and build networks amongst young women who are largely underrepresented in electronic music culture – including DJ’ing, producing and in other ‘backroom’ positions (bookings, sound engineers and administration).

The Wise Goat - a Grandmother's wisdom | Theresa Ng'ambi | TEDxLusaka
In this performance Zambian folk singer Theresa Ng'ambi recounts the story of the wise goat (as told by her grandmother). Theresa relates this tale to the importance of conserving wildlife and natural resources using the power of song.
This talk was recorded at TEDxLusaka 2019: The power of togetherness held on 1st June 2019 at the NIPA Convention Centre.
Theresa Ng’ambi is a talented Zambian folk singer. On stage, she relates herself to Kanjiba, a bird that sings stories. While her peers were playing hip-hop and nu-soul, she explored a more traditional Zambian sound. A storyteller and a poet, Theresa draws on the traditional musical styles of her grandfather’s era, especially the thumb piano. Her guitar supports the real instrument that is her melodic voice. Theresa’s music is cross-generational and has a broad appeal; she is the “soul” of Zambian folk music. Her album titled “Mandu” was released in 2016. Theresa has been featured on the BBC and has shared stages with Maureen Lilanda, Hugh Masekela, and the Sakala Brothers. In 2018 Theresa Ng'ambi was awarded Best singer at the Zambia Women Awards. A conservationist, she is a brand ambassador for Birdwatch Zambia. Theresa also conducts storytelling programmes with children from Alliance Francaise, Modzi Arts, the American International School in Lusaka, and Liutebm University. World AIDS day 2011 Lusaka Zambia. www. art4art.com
Anti retroviral Man
Too positive to be doubtful
Too optimistic to be fearful
And too determined to be defeated.
Zambia is one of the countries in the Sub Saharan region hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic. The last Zambian Demographic Health Survey which was conducted in 2007, estimated the adult HIV prevalence rate in Zambia to be 14%. Since Anti Retroviral Treatment or ART became available in Zambia in 2004, 320,000 Zambians were initiated on this life saving medication. Even though this is a remarkable achievement, retention in treatment and loss to follow up figures paint a less positive picture. Almost a quarter of the people that start taking ART have stopped (defaulted) the medication 24 months after initiation on therapy.
Art4art is a Zambian artist collaborative, which aims at educating people using art as a medium of expression. For the World AIDS day 2011 art4art has designed and build a 7-meter high statue weighing more than 2 tonnes of Anti Retroviral superman. AntiRetroviral Man is Zambias first superhero. He champions Anti Retroviral Treatment
The AntiRetroviral Man statue is made out of old hospice beds on which thousands of people have died of AIDS. It is modelled after Winstone Zulu Zambias late AIDs activist.
We have the ambition to place the AntiRetroviral Man statue on a landmark site in Lusaka, where it will remind people of the importance of living positively and adhere to treatment.

Performance Black & White and the Grey matter in between 002
The idea of the performance arose during the preparation of the solo exhibition by Lawrence Chikwa in May 2016 in Lusaka, Zambia (Modzi Arts). More specifically, the performance has been inspired on Chikwa’s painting “The newly graduates”, which addresses the colonial past of Zambia.
Jess Steward about First graduates”:
This piece is a powerful critique of colonialism and specifically the paternalism that was a basic component of it. The standing white man is attired in full white, setting himself apart from his surroundings, the people and the clay that he stands on. A group of small adults sit below a blackboard marked with simple statements that would be taught to children. The knowledge the people have, has clearly not been accounted for, or thought to be of worth, and the primacy is given to the systems of the foreign, colonizing people. Especially poignant is the inclusion of two elderly men who are being infantilized not only by the requirement of their presence in the lesson but also by the fact that they are forced to wear shorts, like young boys, rather than the pants of the male colonist. (Text: Jess Steward).
Camiel van Lenteren: “As a performance artist I like to create performances that result in an outcome , which together with the performance story line, photo’s (and / or film) and the “outcome materials” creates the, what I call, “steady state” artwork. The outcome here is about “Black and White” thinking connected to old postcolonial thoughts, which all came to life when I first saw “First Graduates” in the studio of Lawrence Chikwa”.
Description of the performance:
A white man and a black woman presented themselves to the public and changed clothes. White in white clothes and Black in black clothes. The two placed themselves at their “working spaces”, each provided with different materials. White materials included mealie meal flour (Mais flour), coffee creamer and body lotion. The black and brown materials where mainly charcoal and red/brown earth taken from the Lusaka area.
The performance started with the performers washing themselves with clear water. Next, they attempted to turn themselves into “the other” colour, finding out that this is quite hard. After trials and errors, the performers turned to canvases that hung on the walls. One black canvas and one white canvas. The black canvas was attacked with white materials and the white canvas with black and brown materials.
All this time there was silence, the performers had no contact. This changed when the white canvas was turned black/brown and the black canvas was almost transformed into white. At that moment, the performers started to look at each other’s creations and to each other’s odd appearances. It didn’t stop there, as they then started to try out what happens if white material was applied on black and brown and the other way around. Mixing up the colours. This mixing continued until the performers where satisfied with the results and with each other. They then hugged, bowed to the camera and walked out of the scene together as brothers in arms, gladly as they were that mixing of colours doesn’t end up in greyness.
