The Moeraki boulders - Roadside Stories
In Māori tradition the remarkable spherical boulders on Moeraki beach are eel pots -- or baskets of kūmara (sweet potato) washed ashore from the Ārai-te-uru voyaging canoe. To scientists the boulders are concretions, formed around 60 million years ago from sediment and calcite.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are heading toward the Otago town of Oamaru! On the way there we have to stop by the famous Moeraki Boulders, right? Except... We reach the Moeraki Boulders at the wrong time of day. This is when NOT to visit the Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand.
Nevertheless, we actually arrive in Oamaru at the perfect time of the year, just in time for the annual Victorian Fete in Oamaru! On the first day of the Victorian Fete is the Victorian Parade so we hit the streets of Oamaru to watch the Victorian Parade! It’s fair to say that Victorian Oamaru has a LOT of character!
So what do you think of the Moeraki Boulders at high tide? How about the Victorian Parade in Oamaru? Would you add these activities to your Oamaru travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

New Zealand - Moeraki Mystical Boulders, Otago
By the coast of Otago on the south island of New Zealand you'll find the mystical boulders of Moeraki. Along the shorelines there's lots of round boulders... People with a vivid imagination has pictured these beeing eggs of dinosaurs. And some of them have cracks like an eggshell about to burst open. And while they look like they arrived from the sea, they're not... The truth is out there, but for now I let anyones fantasy play for a while. :-)

Moeraki Boulders New Zealand can be found just north of the Moeraki Village on the Koekohe beach. These New Zealand Boulders Moeraki found at Moeraki, are unique to New Zealand, however, they are found in other parts of the world.
Known as Septarian Concretions they are millions of years old.
In this video, I give you an overview of the Boulders, shag point and Kakanui.

Road Trip from Christchurch to Dunedin! Moeraki Boulders and Blue Penguins! | Travel Vlog Day 3
The first official day of my New Zealand road trip happened at the end of my week at LCA in Christchurch. Once the conference was over, I hopped in a rental car, drove on the wrong side of the road (or right side? ha!) for the first time ever, and made my way to Dunedin.
On the way I stopped by Moeraki Boulders to check out these interesting rocks, then checked into my hotel in Dunedin. After dinner, I drove down the coast to the Royal Albatross Center where I took a little tour down to a Blue Penguin habitat. MUCH CUTENESS SO WOW!

New Zealand, Moeraki - Moeraki Boulders
This is the place that was featured in one of the editions of Lonely Planet. Its spherical shape was formed from erosion and took millions of years. Local Maori legends explained the boulders as the remains washed ashore from the wreck of Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe.
