Khartoum (/kɑːrˈtuːm/ kar-TOOM)[4][5] is the capital and largest city of Sudan and the state of Khartoum. It is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as al-Mogran (المقرنthe confluence). The main Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
Divided by the two Rivers Nile, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with an estimated overall population of over five million people, consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Khartoum North (الخرطوم بحري al-Kharṭūm Baḥrī) and Omdurman (أم درمان Umm Durmān) to the west.Economy[edit]
Development in Khartoum
After the signing of the historic Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLA), the Government of Sudan began a massive development project.[26][27] In 2007, the biggest projects in Khartoum were the Al-Mogran Development Project, two five-star hotels, a new airport, Mac Nimir Bridge (finished in October 2007) and the Tuti Bridge that links Khartoum to Tuti Island.
In the 21st century, Khartoum developed based on Sudan's oil wealth (although the independence of South Sudan in 2011 affected the economy of Sudan negatively[28]). The center of the city has tree-lined streets. Khartoum has the highest concentration of economic activity in the country. This has changed as major economic developments take place in other parts of the country, like oil exploration in the South, the Giad Industrial Complex in Al Jazirah state and White Nile Sugar Project in Central Sudan, and the Merowe Dam in the North.[citation needed]
Among the city's industries are printing, glass manufacturing, food processing, and textiles. Petroleum products are now produced in the far north of Khartoum state, providing fuel and jobs for the city. One of Sudan's largest refineries is located in northern Khartoum.[28]
Retailing[edit]
The Souq Al Arabi is Khartoum's largest open air market. The souq is spread over several blocks in the center of Khartoum proper just south of the Great Mosque (Mesjid al-Kabir) and the minibus station. It is divided into separate sections, including one focused entirely on gold.[29]
Al Qasr Street and Al Jamhoriyah Street are considered the most famous high streets in Khartoum State.
Afra Mall is located in the southern suburb Arkeweet. The Afra Mall has a supermarket, retail outlets, coffee shops, a bowling alley, movie theaters, and a children's playground.
In 2011, Sudan opened the Hotel Section and part of the food court of the new, Corinthia hotel Tower. The Mall/Shopping section is still under construction.

Thousands of people from what is now South Sudan have been living in Sudan for years. Many say they feel safer in Khartoum and lead a better life. And with the recent violence in their homeland, some believe they have made the right decision to stay. Al Jazeera's Mohamaed Vall reports from Khartoum.

SUDAN: KHARTOUM: PROTESTS AGAINST US MISSILE ATTACK

Thousands of Sudanese have gathered outside their country's presidential palace to protest against the U-S attack on a factory in the capital, Khartoum.
President Clinton ordered a missile strike on Thursday against a factory in Sudan in retaliation for the bombing in Nairobi and one a day earlier in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
U-S missiles also hit suspected camps of Muslim militant Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan.
Chanting God is greater than America, thousands of people gathered on the streets of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, venting their anger at the U-S.
As in similar demonstrations around the Middle East on Friday, the crowd set fire to American flags and destroyed an effigy of President Clinton.
To the joy of protestors, the rally was addressed by the Sudanese president himself.
El-Bashir struck a militant chord, calling Sudan's defiance of the United States a war for the sake of Islam.

The Islamic leaders in Sudan, where as many as nine out of 10 of the country's 28 (m) million people live in poverty, oversee a network of well-organised cadres which can turn out thousands into the streets.
Their security network is pervasive, closely monitoring dissent.
Sudan's beleaguered government has sought to use the air strikes, which left one dead and nine wounded, to rally a people weary of war and economic hardship.

Sudan plans to lodge complaints with the Arab League and the Organization of African Unity.
On Friday it asked the Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to consider authorizing a U-N fact-finding investigation.
This man is still in hospital suffering severe burns - he was injured in the U-S missile attack.
Staff are hopeful he will recover.

The targeted factory - El-Shifa Pharmaceutical Industries - was hit by six Tomahawk cruise missiles.
On Saturday brown glass jars sat in piles amid crushed red bricks and twisted sheet metal.
Civil defense workers said fires burned until Friday night and their pungent fumes hung over the site like a cloud.
The factory's owners are angry and say they are innocent of U-S accusations.

America and Egypt have long accused Sudan of harboring Muslim extremists.
The U-S has withdrawn its diplomats from Khartoum and imposed limited sanctions on Sudan because of this concern.

El Morgran is a community that benefitted from the ‘Wadi El Ku Catchment Management Project’. The project has been implemented jointly by UN Environment and Practical Action and is funded by the European Union.

Thousands took to the streets in Khartoum, Sudan today (Monday).
The rally is a massive show of support for Omar el-Bashir - the country's President - and an opportunity for many to voice their anger at Egypt.
The two sides have engaged in rhetorical skirmishes and border clashes since Egypt's President accused Sudan's leading Islamic cleric, Hassan Turabi, of orchestrating the assassination attempt against him a week ago in Ethiopia.
It is a massive show of military might.
Thousands showed up for this military parade and later gathered here to stage a rally in support of their President - Omar el-Bashir.
Sudanese troops have been increasingly involved in border clashes with Egypt.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's recent allegations that Sudan's Islamic regime was involved in the failed assassination attempt - have also heightened tensions between the two nations.
This rally - a continuation of protests held over the weekend - is part of the Islamic-led government's effort to whip up public sentiment after Mubarak's allegations.
But the government may be able to deal Egypt a harder blow.
As a result of the clashes on the Sudanese/Egyptian border - a Sudanese official said his country would not hesitate to use water as a weapon if Egypt tries forcibly to resolve the dispute.
The threat to withhold Nile River waters - critical to Egypt's nearly 60 million people is expected to prompt an immediate response from Mubarak.
As skirmishes continue on the oil-rich borders - support for el-Bashir looks set to remain strong.
