Muhammad Ali mosque is considered the most visible mosque in Cairo with its animated silhouette and twin minarets. This mosque is also considered the largest to be built in the 19th century, which was built for Muhammad Ali Pasha's son after he died.
The whole place is worth visiting - whether the citadel as a whole or else stopping by the mosque. This place is very beautiful from the inside and one of the positive points to mention here is that standing at the top, since it is built on a higher ground, will give tourists the chance to have a good full view of the city, Cairo, and could also manage to see the pyramids - which are far from this area - if the sky is clear.
We recommend this place for the photographers who want to end up with beautiful pictures for the city, because taking pictures is actually allowed there, but it is preferred not to do much inside the mosque especially if some people are praying.
It is better to take a pair of socks with you - if you are not already wearing them - because you will have to take the shoes off while being inside or else will be asked to wear plastic bags over the shoes. Also women are supposed to cover their shoulders and head while being inside the place, as some kind of appreciation to it and to the Muslim rules.
Muhammad Ali mosque entrance fee is 60 EGP for foreigners. This is considered not much to view the old and ancient Egyptian interiors and at the same time witness those huge chandeliers hanged inside.
It is better to take your food and drinks with you because they will be more expensive inside the citadel - or in any other touristic place in general.
This place is a must visit for those who are planning to go to Egypt and it will never take much of their time because the mosque has no artifacts to see, it is just getting inside and seeing how the whole place was built and how it is now decorated. The time will be spent in the rest of the citadel since it is quietly big and carries different things to be seen inside and a lot of walking.
Muhammad Ali mosque working hours are everyday from 8 AM till 5 PM, except that it closes during Friday prayers. There are restaurants and gift shops available, but they might be over priced and thus it is better to bring your snacks and drinks and go somewhere else when it comes to your lunch or dinner time.
As much as you are going to enjoy the whole place and the interiors of it, it is also a good story to hear because the story behind this mosque is as huge as the place. It is always recommended to bring a guide with you or else get the chance to read everything beforehand in order to know about the place instead of just watching.
Finally, we have to mention that the citadel in general is always one of the things placed on the list of things to do in Egypt so you will most probably never miss the chance to get across this mosque and get astonished by the things found inside or the breathtaking view which you will get the chance to see from the top there.

Salah Al-Deen (know as Saladin to European historians) overthrew the Fatimid dynasty in 1171 AD, establishing the new Sunni Ayyubid Caliphate. The minarets of the Alabaster Mosque rise 84 metres into the sky and have become an integral part of Cairo's silhouette. The impressive interior of the building is illuminated by an enormous chandelier, a gift from the French King, Louis Philippe The Fifth. Today, the light of the original three hundred and sixty-five oil lamps is powered by electricity, yet the great building still possesses a sublime atmosphere. The brilliance of the light augments the dimensions of the mosque to a breathtaking degree and the ceiling of the great prayer hall is over fifty metres high. Beneath the central cupola is the dignified tomb of King Mohammed Ali. The royal casket is made of the finest Italian marble and is decorated with Turkish motifs. Today, the Alabaster Mosque is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of Egyptian Islamic-Ottoman architecture of the 19th century. It has lost none of its former shining magnificence.

Mohamed Ali Tewfik was the owner of this palace and that is the reason why it was once referred to and known as Mohamed Ali Palace, until later on when it was transformed into a historic house museum that carries different antiquities related to the settings and lifestyle of the late 19th and early 20th century Egyptian royal prince and heir apparent.
For those who enjoy visiting the real palaces where the old princes and kings used to live, this is one destination we recommend when it comes to visit Egypt. Mohamed Ali Palace, or Manial Palace as it is known, is a compound that is divided into five different buildings, these buildings have a lot of rooms and are also surrounded by Persian and English gardens as well as a small branch of the Nile. This palace carries the extensive art, silver, clothing, and furniture that used to belong to the middle ages.
The design of the whole place is different and it seems that there was a lot of effort exerted in the bringing it to life. It was built in the European Art Nouveau and Rococo style that is mixed with some Islamic architecture. The interior design of the place takes the breath away and makes one think about how people used to live in such a place since there is a lot of ceramic tile work done.
After all those years of the construction of the palace, it is still in a very good shape and the furniture placed inside is also different but yet in very good forms. This is not considered a so much visited place yet it deserves much more attention from the public, just in the same way they tend to visit and get impressed by Muhammad Ali Mosque that is located inside the citadel (
Every single room found in every single building will take you through a different experience and will leave you always astonished with the different tiles that are used to give the room a different look and at the same time tend to give it a different feeling and atmosphere.
This is considered a very good place to visit when it comes to the attractions near the middle of the city, since it is not much far away from the downtown area ( and at the same time it is worth it for all the different things that you will manage to come across and see.
To get the chance to enter all the rooms inside and make a good tour through the whole place, you have to be ready for spending about three or four hours in total.
For those who have made their minds about visiting Mohamed Ali Palace, they should know that it opens everyday except Tuesday from 9 AM and closes at 4 PM, and better to avoid it on Friday during Friday prayer time because you will most probably find nobody there to help you if you want guidance.
Mohamed Ali Palace entrance fee for the Egyptians is 20 Egyptian pounds, which means that it would be for about 40 Egyptian pounds for foreigners, and those who want to take pictures, they will need to pay extra 50 Egyptian pounds for the tour inside; not expensive for a magnificent place like this one.
We know, there are a lot of things which might be considered much more important to some people when it comes to Cairo attractions, such as visiting the Egyptian Museum ( going to the Pyramids ( or even visiting the citadel ( but they have to dig deep because they will most probably find new gems hidden in every corner related to this country.
